Ripley (2024)
A slow but amazing interpretation of Ripley
I have to admit that I might be a bit biased as I love Andrew Scott, but I think he really delivered. His character was complex, and while the show was slow paced, he really held attention without overdoing it. The casting in general was great, although I have to say that I felt that Freddie felt a little out of place, she looked to modern to be believable for the time period imo.
Purple Noon, The Talented mr Ripley and Ripley all have different interpretations of the story. Personally I loved this slow, dark, mature black and white interpretation. The slow pace somehow made it feel more believable, as if it was happening in real time.
This Ripley is older and has a history of scheming, you can tell that everyone he meets from the starts feels that something is off about him, but he does gain their trust. There is an obvious darkness about him. The black and white really portrais his dark personality well. Dickie is rich, kind and naive, living a slow paced life .
If you go in expecting a different interpretation then you will absolutely love it. Just enjoy the story and the visuals.
Alan Wake II (2023)
Binge watching and gaming at the same time
I played the first Alan Wake a few months ago when it was free on playstation Plus, and I really liked it. I don't really care for horror games, but I loved it due to the great storytelling.
Alan Wake II is different than Alan Wake I, and for me in a positive way. There are less battles in Alan Wake II; this game is even more focused on the story and puzzles. It being more story driven instead of combat doesn't take anything away from the gaming experience though. They used very refreshing gaming tactics to reveal the story.
The game looks stunning, and without spoiling too much, there are some very unexpectedly fun additions to the game that made me run upstairs to tell my boyfriend wtf just happened because it was just to unexpected for a game.
I recommend playing Alan Wake I first, or watching a decent recap of Alan Wake I to get a sense of the story, before playing Alan Wake II.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
a small magical world
I watched this movie 20 years ago and absolutely loved it, I considered it to be my favorite movie, so I watched it again this week. And the magic still got to me.
For me that charm is that it's a 'small story'/small stories. Some might desire a great pay off at the end of a movie, but to me this movie is so amazing due to its small pay off. The little joys of life, and how you can ate least try to make others experience these little joys of life.
I love that all the characters are flawed, that makes the little gestures she tries to do even more amiable. Everyone feels better when someone is nice to them, and it makes flawed people a little less flawed.
Shrinking (2023)
A sitcom version of After Life
The premise of the show reminds me of Ricky Gervais's After Life. It's a show about how grief can make you an unbearable person to the people you love, and about how these people still try to help you.
In After Life this story was told perfectly - a great combination and balance between comedy and drama. Shrinking doesn't really seem to find the balance between those two. It feels like an old school sitcom, just lacking a laughing track. When they try to add the 'drama' it feels unnatural, as if the premise of the show is only an after thought.
That doesn't mean that it is a horrible show, it can be entertaining at times and I will finish the show, but it's not a show I would recommend.
King of Stonks (2022)
Fun fastpased show
A very entertaining show, it moves fast and might feel a bit chaotic, but for me that really adds to the story. The stock market is moving fast, bringing out chaos and stress.
The characters are great, they are over the top, but still rooted in reality. Don't expect this to be a serious show, just enjoy the ride.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Anyone older than 12 won't like it
Another teen show, the acting is poor, the story is developing poorly too. It does look very pretty though. But that's the only good thing about it.
Next (2020)
Very contemporary
I don't get the low ratings, it's very contemporary and refreshing. It made me reconsider getting a 'too smart' home. I cannot wait for season 2.
Unorthodox (2020)
Started off good, but then the writer missed the mark
Overall I really liked the show, it was interesting to gain a little insight in a world that I'm not familiar with. The acting was really good. But it went down the drain when the story moved to Berlin. The writer changed the story so much that it became a gimmick. Meeting a group of divers people, immediately becoming your best friends, 5 seconds after you get off the plane, is just ridiculous. Especially in contrast to the start of the movie, where the story still felt true. It's a shame, could have been a lot better if they didn't try to add their own spin on the story. Still worth the watch
Motherland: Fort Salem (2020)
Just missing the mark when it comes to acting and dialogue
It's a fun series, if you don't take it too seriously. The acting and dialogues were so bad at some moments that we laughed out loud. The show is also trying to be "refreshing", but is stuffed with cliches non the less.
Don't get me wrong, it's a fun show, it's just not a very good show.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
I laughed and I cried
I saw this movie yesterday, and was a bit worried that it would be a bit of an inappropriate movie, considering the trailer. But, as I was done browsing and just wanted to put on a movie I went for it anyway. And I was amazed by this movie.
It takes on a difficult topic, and makes it accessible and very witty. There was a lot of laughing and a lot of crying during this movie. I can definitely recommend it, acting is superb too.
Truth Seekers (2020)
didn't know what to expect but i loved it
I almost quit after the first 2 minutes as I thought it might be an "actual horror" movie, and I'm too jumpy for that. But it's not a horror shows at all, it's also not a 'real' comedy in the way that it is completely stuffed with jokes, but in the way that it doesn't take itself too seriously. They've found a nice middle ground here to make both genres work together.
Fun short episodes with loveable characters. Finished the entire season in one evening and cannot wait for a next season.
Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
Love or hate the host
I think that you either love or hate this show, personally I cannot stand the host. He tries too much to be a "fun character". It's way too fake for me.
Everything is looks amazing, it's just that you love of hate the host
The Bold Type (2017)
it's a chick flick like every other, except that it tries really hard to check all the political boxes
It's an entertaining show, but that's it. they really try to force political correctness in every episode, without it really adding to the story. that makes it feel like the show is based more on a checklist than a storyline.
Nobushi no Gourmet (2017)
Easy and sweet show
There is no real story here. It's about a retired man who goes out to eat and day dreams about what he would do if he was a samurai.
It's very short, there is no real story, and that's exactly what makes the show so good. It's a few minutes of feel good.
Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019)
Not very good but still fun (yet sometimes frustrating) to watch as a makeup artist
I was very excited to see a show about makeup artist as i am a make-up artist myself.
But for me they made the mistake by making the challenges to varied. I think it would have been better if they went for either a "professional make-up artist" or "instagram make-up artist" challenge. Of course they should have some variation between the challenges, but for me they went a bit overboard.
I also really did not agree with the judging, also due to the reason above. Someone was very good all over and was then dropped by failing at one, while there were people who were at the bottom the entire show but still went on.
Didn't like the judging of the technical challenges either, also, stop trying to make "ding dong" happen.
I think it can be a great show if next season they focus on professional or instagram challenges (and contestants) and change their judges.
Ad Astra (2019)
Searching for something you already had
I went in to this movie thinking it was a sci fi, but realized very quickly it was not - but that's ok. It's about a relationship between a son and his father, and trying to find something you already had but lost due to this search. It's more about portraying an emotion than a story line.
Could have been a good movie, it is very slow paced but that can sometimes be a good thing. But there were some random action scenes added to the movie, which felt completely out of place and did not contribute to the movie in any way. It felt a bit forced.
Same with the over casting. There were a lot of familiar faces that were randomly added to the movie, which made it a bit gimmicky. They had the role of extra's but were giving a few lines to make up for the fact that they had no reason being there.
And then the final did not really work, all above could have been forgiven if the confrontation with the father was really good. But that did not really work either.
I did like the fact that they portrayed "the future" in a retro way.
Dispatches from Elsewhere (2020)
refreshing show, stuck in my head for a few days now
I really loved this show, and don't understand the harsh critiques. To each their own I guess. The first episodes showed this wonderful, creative and surreal environment, and let us get to know the main characters. These are very lonely characters learning that life is better if you live it with other people. They are going on a quest together and find out more about themselves.
The plot is very surprising, and I do understand that some people did not like it, for me it was the perfect plot as it made the entire series even more relatable.
I hope there will be a second season, even though I have no idea how they would like to approach it.
Homecoming (2018)
season 1 was intrueging, season 2 not so much
I liked season 1, it's a very slow show, and you have to give in to it, but then it's ok. season 2 however is poorly, specifically the acting. since the story is so slow, the acting should have been more engaging.
Midsommar (2019)
Predictable and boring, and why not develop story lines and just end them?
The beginning of the movie (when it was about her parents and sister) looked pretty promising, and I wondered how this would develop throughout the movie. But the storyline just ended. From that point on everything was extremely predictable. I was hoping for an amazing plot twist at the ends, but the story just ended and the credits started to roll.
There was a lot they could have done with this story, but they didn't do anything with it.
James May: Our Man in... (2020)
Very funny, and informative
I was afraid that I wouldn't like James May in a setting outside of Top Gear/The Grand Tour, but he was amazing. It was very informative, very funny and you could tell that he had a lot of respect for their culture.
Don't judge this show by it's trailer, as the trailer almost made me pass on this show. It's just amazing and I want and need to see more of James and Japan
You (2018)
second season better than expected!
I always worry about "a second season", but this second season was very good! I was rooting for "Will" trying to be a good guy, well, better guy. Nice story line and plot twists through the season
The Chef Show (2019)
Narscistic show, nothing else
This shows is about two people who love to talk about themselves, while making food, sometimes with guests who they ignore. It get what they wanted to achieve, and it has potential, but the two hosts are way to self involved. I really don't get the high ratings.
Black Mirror: Smithereens (2019)
Not "Black Mirror" worthy, but nice episode non the less
If you are not expecting a ming blowing real black mirror episode, than this story is really nice. It story is pretty predictable but decent non the less. Andrew is amazing in this, but it just does not live up to the first seasons of black mirror
Requiem (2018)
Was hoping for a better plot - didn't deliver at all
I like slow shows, but this one was really slow. Tried to add tension, but did not deliver - making it annoying. Acting wasn't that good either. I got through it, so wasn't too bad, but wouldn't recommend it.
First They Killed My Father (2017)
Amazing movie
I absolutely loved this movie.
The view of a 7 year old girl on her situation made me very emotional. From being a smal naive girl, not being aware of the hostile situation she is in, to a girl who has unfortunately gained understanding on what is actually going on. Even though she is dealing with emotional/dramatic/violent encounters, she still remains a little girl. Yet less naive. The perspective of the girl impressed me.
