Glass (2019)
A Grand Finale
I will admit, I was incredibly nervous when I saw the first reviews for this movie. It hurt just a little bit more than most because I have been looking forward to this movie since I saw split. But I bought the tickets and went to go see it, bracing myself for whatever was to come.
I am soooooo glad that I went.
This movie was absolutely amazing. While it does have its flaws and doesn't live up to the masterpiece that is unbreakable, I put it on par with split. After seeing it, I was confused as to why people didn't like it. It does almost the exact same thing that unbreakable did. Smart plays on the tropes of comic books that are executed in brilliant ways.
We have to remember that when unbreakable came out, it was not criticaly praised either. Back then, super hero movies were not as abundant as they are now. And then all of the sudden this quiet superhero movie comes out of nowhere and plays with all these tropes that only hardcore comic fans are familiar with. This is why I'm shocked that in the era we live in now, when superheroes have become mainstream, people still don't get it.
In a nutshell, that is really what the problem with everyone who didn't like this movie: they didn't get it. Admittedly, you have to fit a very certain criteria to like this film. You have to either be a die hard fan of unbreakable, a die hard fan of split, have a deep love of comics and a deep understanding of how they work, or all of the above. But like I said, if you don't fit that criteria, you wont get it.
So give this movie a chance. If you didn't like it, please go see it again with what I said in mind, and maybe you'll change your mind. If you don't, you're entitled to your opinion and I can't change that. But I will stand by my claim that glass is the perfect finale to an epic trilogy.
Halloween (2018)
Absolutely Outstanding!
Dare I say it? This movie may be better than the original Halloween.
I cannot emphasize this enough: this movie is AMAZING! The sheer amount of horror and heart that went into this film is remarkable. The idea of having Laurie Strode being like Sarah Connor in terminator 2 is brilliant. She has been preparing for this night for a long time but everybody thinks that she's crazy. The film exceeds all of my expectations and standards not just as a great slasher film, but as a smart feminist pro #metoo movie. In the movie, the men are all ineffective or working against them. The women are the heroes who get stuff done and save the day. The movie also deals with the reality of trauma and how it affects not just the victim, but the people who surround them and the generations that follow. On top of all that, it's scary and atmospheric. Halloween is triumphant on all fronts and is one hell of a great movie.
The Predator (2018)
Without a doubt the best predator sequel.
When I heard about this movie I was super excited. I am a HUGE predator fan and was excited to see the hunters return to the big screen. Through all the delays and reshoots I patiently waited for 3 years for this movie to come out.
And it didn't disappoint.
This movie does just about everything that it was supposed to and more. It had the humor, the gore and the predator action it required to be a awesome predator movie. And then it did me a solid and went above and beyond that. It introduced the most likable rouge mercenary team of predator fodder in it's franchise history. When I met them, I didn't want any of them to die. To the point where I found myself going "no!" when they did.
On top of all that, it's completely original. It's not just another hunt in another place. It's the battle for the human species survival against a whole new level of threat.
Which by they way, hybrid predators give this predator movie a whole 'nother notch of originality.
So as of to date, this is by far the best predator sequel.
Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013)
Why all the hate?
I picked this game up having aliens being one of my favorite movies of all time. A few days later I read reviews that say this game was crap. And I was honestly confused. This game is great! I've played it with many friends who think it's great. So I really don't get all of the hate for this game. It has a decent story, great gameplay, is scary in some places and is one of those games where you look at your watch and you realize you just spent six hours of your day playing it. If a game can get me to do that, that's a good game. So don't take the bad reviews to heart. Please read this, play it yourself and see what you think.
It (2017)
One of the greatest horror movies of all time.
I am a huge horror buff. So I have seen countless of good and bad horror films. Ranging from movies like The Visit to Halloween to Alien. All of these movies where scary in their own way, but none of them had ever kept me scared the entire time... until IT.
IT is one of the few remakes that is better than the original. Which is really surprising for a horror movie. This movie captures everything that made the book great. The subtle messages about what evil is, the terror of IT and most importantly the heart of the characters. IT is one of the greatest horror films of all time and I am really looking forward to chapter 2
Remember... if you come with me... you'll float too.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
You have to accept the film for what it is
If you're going to watch this film you cant walk in expecting a serious film. Well maybe serious is the wrong word, but you have to be in on the joke and open minded.
The sole purpose of this film is to watch the alien and the predator just go at it. If you are expecting that, you won't be disappointed. While the lack of gore does take away from some of the scenes it's all in all a fun flick. Especially if you're an alien and/or predator fan.
Retreat
Brilliant thriller about running away from grief
I had the privilege to go see this movie at the riverrun film festival. I didn't really know what to expect as the trailer was a little hard to follow but I went in with good expectations all the same. It ended up being a lot like the beginning of Get Out where you can tell something is off but you can't quite place it. But when I thought it was going to go in that direction, it ended up going somewhere where totally different and even better. While it does drag a bit at the beginning, Retreat is a brilliant thriller about the dangers of trying to run away from your pain. I hope the director of this film continues to make more movies like this.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
I'm getting really sick of all the hate on this movie.
Have you ever watched an amazing movie and seen so many negative reviews for it that it actually made you angry? That has been my experience for this movie every day. People need to stop whining and accept that just because this movie is different doesn't mean it's bad
I, like many Star Wars fans, went into this movie with expectations. High ones at that. I expected some twist like obi wan kenobi was Rey's grandfather and for Luke to still stay true to the Jedi code. What I got was something entirely different and even better. Luke has to go through his own character arch and rey's parents were nobodies. Giving her the freedom to be an original character. A lot of bold choices were made by Rian Johnson in this movie and all of them worked extremely well. (Forgive me for not going into specifics. I'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible.)
As for those negative reviews, I don't even think those reviews are from Star Wars fans. I think that one guy gave this movie a one star and a ton of haters just joined the bandwagon. Seriously, people. This is one of the greatest Star Wars movies of all time and I am done letting it revive all this hate.
So I hope people take this review to heart and learn to appreciate the last Jedi for what it is: revolutionary.
