Depp V Heard (2023)
8/10
A Showcase

An interesting documentary.

Not accompanied by a narrator, it combines more prominent court scenes with social media reactions, comments made by TV and other experts plus scenes from outside the court and a bit of what happened after the trial has ended. It is neither investigative, nor does it take on any position - not Depp's, not Heard's.

For neutral people (like me in this case), this documentary pushes you through your own persuasibility by watching selected court scenes accompanied by YouTubers' and other social media figures' reactions and comments, partially obviously not reflected, though possibly supporting your own momentary impressions (not to say that influencers get money for us following their channels). You may find yourself being on (for example) Depp's side, influenced by Depp-supporters (the majority), and feel for Heard at some other moments - or the other way round.

Near end, there is something like a 'twist': After the trial was over, Depp fans bought some evidence withheld by the court only to learn that it would have supported Heard. But then, the next twist, the documentary reveals the official reason why this evidence had been withheld (could be faked).

There is more in it, but for me, this documentary is a quite impressive showcase revealing how easily we are influenced by media statements, and how we uninvolved people become judge and jury ourselves by letting us experience this process.

And it's a reminder that we don't know the truth. We are someone's fan, we've got impressions and feelings about things - but no, we don't know the truth.

And this documentary won't tell us.

Anyway, this debate will go on and on and on until the next one comes around.
