Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable (2017)
the perfect lie
The perfect documentary for the adventous fortune seeker at heart. Nothing about this production was unbelievable except for the very last scene... a true masterpiece of bald faced lies but one I actually don't mind having been duped into believing. A must see without any prior knowledge. If you share the video link with someone just tell them it is a fascinating story and leave it at that. It certainly does have a way of disappointing one when you realize it is all just hogwash, but in all honesty the way in which it was done is absolutely masterful. I consider myself extremely sharp witted, but this made me look like a 3 year old at a roulette table... fool me twice...
Doctor Who Am I (2022)
Deeply meaningful in a timelessly multi-dimensional way...
I have seen documentaries about niche fan conventions before. Cosplay, Comicon, Retro Con, Trekkies and the list goes on. What sets this doccie apart from the rest is the unexpected connection that is forged between the somewhat unsuspecting Matthew Jacobs and the Dr Who fandom community as he seeks out the true heart of the community. At the same time he delves into his own life long involvement in the franchise through a rather intimate exploration of family bond and common interests shared with the fans. Ultimately Matthew discovers that Dr Who am I really is Dr who are we as it becomes apparent that there is more to the community than mere fandom, and Matthew discovers a strange sense of belonging through the process of travelling back in time down memory lane and ends up establishing a rather charming connection with this oddball community.
Knysna (2014)
A typical South African Gem
I remember the days when feel good movies by South African directors made us all feel good. This is one of those original feel good movies. decent scripting, videography and acting as expected. A real friday night special if you are Afrikaans or want to experience some Afrikaans culture.
