Dead & Breakfast (2004)
Pretty darn bad...
I don't really know where to start on this. I love zombie movies and have even liked some very bad ones, but as a zombie movie this is an utter failure in almost all regards. The box says "The American version of Shaun of the Dead" and if that is the case I am ashamed to be an American. Shaun of the Dead was brilliant in more ways than one. If the two can be compared this is on the other extreme of what not to do in a zombie comedy movie.
What makes this so bad? The acting is not terrible, but it is not good so I will not bash that aspect. The gore is alright, and some crazy stuff happens which is to be expected. The lead zombie is pointless and annoying. The zombies don't look that good, the movie is very slow at times and you can tell that a joke was just dropped but it is not able to even draw a chuckle and oh there is the worst aspect of the movie. There is a singing gas station attendant or some such thing who sings between each scene, at least it seems like it, and basically recaps what just happened and leads into the next scene with some blue grass singing that to call it bad would be a complement. He dies and the zombie sings as well.
I wish there was something positive to say for this. If you like terrible movies, check it out. If you rent it because you liked Shaun of the Dead, I beg you and implore you to stop. Do not buy this and only rent it if you have a free rental and rent another good movie to take the taste out of your mouth.
Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam (1985)
A strange little film
I first saw this movie when I was very young. I loved Jim Varney and Ernest at the time, and still do, and having recently come across this movie again I must say. The plot is strange and only mildly existing and the hero is a bumbling fool, who is not Ernest, but all that being said I really like the movie. It is corny but if you like Varney it is great. Dr. Otto is an over the top villain and its worth watching just for him, and the thing you will find if you like the movie is that you are routing for him. This character was later used in other Ernest shorts, especially his Saturday morning kinds show but this is where he came from. We get to see Varney do many characters and many of his voices. I find the movie very enjoyable.
