Midsomer Murders: Death in Chorus (2006)
Season 9, Episode 7
9/10
Great music, great story, finest production values
24 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is one of my favorites: funny, intricate and absorbing, with well known faces in the cast. The episode is a prime example of how amazing the production values (especially the audio work) are throughout the series. Hearing individual voices in the choir, the wings of an owl as it flares over a churchyard, the framing of each shot and the color of Barnaby's eyes. This "behind the scenes" work, that gets far too little praise, is a large reason I go back to Midsomer Murders again and again.

SPOILER!

Also, I have to laugh at Barry Jackson being a better choir conducter than Peter Capaldi. I sang in madrigal choirs all through school and college. Jackson is a rock. Capaldi is a swaying Aspen dancing to a different tune.

As Bad as the Music Was in Past Seasons.....

It's excruciating this season. It has no connection to the video. It crashes to a climax at stupid times, changes style without reason and sorta sounds like my little brother's 8th grade band. When did a cooking contest become so ridiculously dramatic?! I wish I could eliminate the music track completely.

Lots of political craziness that speaks to today's climate in the US (2019)

Bill Nighy addict here. He's one of the great British actors. You can see the intelligence in his eyes, the wheels turning. This is the quiet type of spy movie. No speeding cars, no shoot 'em ups. The duplicity of motives is beautifully portrayed. The writing is superb. I have watched it several times and find more each time.

Phenomenal Adaptation (through two episodes 😁)
14 March 2019
I've only watched two episodes so far, yet the way Deborah Harkness and company have folded the book into itself is worthy of magic itself! Not to mention the cinematography and the score, the things left to the imagination by intelligent editing, and, of course, the acting. The casting is delightful. It had me wrapping my head around Greg McHugh's rather Widmerpool-ish face as Hamish, realizing the great wisdom of having him personify the demon. The leads are superb. I am as entranced here as I am when reading the novels. I have a feeling the annual subscription price to Sundance Now is already the best money I've spent this year.
