Captain Marvel (2019)
Captain Marvel is very upsetting
Don't go into this film thinking you're gonna see a masterpiece. This film is your average Marvel movie, and by that I mean it's fine. It's not as shockingly amazing as Infinity War and it's not as stupidly bad as Thor: The Dark World. It's just fine. My rating has nothing to do with the film having a female lead; in fact, that might be the reason I'm giving the film an extra point. I think it's great that Hollywood is making these female lead superhero films, and I think they should continue to do so. But the movie itself falls short on pretty much every aspect of it. I'm not saying this film is trash and you shouldn't go see it. I can't tell you what to do or what not to do. I'm saying that in my own opinion, it's far from being a perfect film, and it's close to being a below-average experience.
I think the main issue for me was the pacing and the complete number of plot holes within the film that just ruins it for me. The third act was probably the weakest of the three because of how much was going on and how fast it passed by. A good example of this is the dang cat. All I thought in the theatre was, "WTF?". And it's not just because of the fact that Nick Fury has an eyepatch cuz of a stupid cat scratch, but also because we have no explanation on what the hell the cat is and where it came from. We just see him appear, we see him shoot tentacles out of his mouth, and no one questions it which is just flat out dumb and makes the whole entire cat as apart of the movie unnecessary. I honestly would've bought it if the cat happened to be a Skrull the whole time, which I was actually hoping for.
Another good example of the awful pacing is toward the end of the second act where Captain Marvel finds out the truth about her past and the Skrulls. Let me just say, the entire scene with her, her friend, and the Skrull is unbelievably forced. It was like a minute long and she already had everything under control after she found out she was lied to for years. This is not a realistic reaction, and if they put time and effort into this plot twist and how they resolved it, it would've been so much better.
Captain Marvel as a character is just bland and legit has no personality. And as mentioned, her reactions to things are really forced and feel fake, and it wasn't Brie Larson's fault. She's an amazing actress. The fault lies with mediocre writing. It legit makes me cringe just thinking about it. Her lines are always these cheesy one-liners meant to either motivate us or make us laugh, which this movie fails at doing. The point that Captain Marvel as a character is trying to advocate does not work, and I feel like the Russo Brothers will do a better job with her in Endgame.
And as for Nick Fury...I can just say that he seems like a completely different character in this film. I thought that he would change once he damaged his eye, but I was wrong. I don't really have to defend why Nick Fury's character fell short in this film. And again, it wasn't Sam L. Jackson's fault, it was the writing.
Overall, Captain Marvel is a Marvel movie by Marvel Studios starring Captain Marvel and her mentor Mar-Vel. It's not the worst film I've ever seen, but it's definitely not the best by a long shot. I hope my reasoning makes it clear as to why my rating is what it is.
Final Verdict: 5/10
