Lost: Exposé (2007)
This season has taken a turn for the better....
Wow is really all I can say about this episode. It really was an incredible Lost episode, and it really looks like Lost is (or should be) pulling out of whatever slump it's had since changing time slots.
This show was excellently written, from the first scene to the last. The writers really do a good job about showing what Nikki and Paolo have been doing before and after the plane crash. While they fit it into one episode, Nikki and Paolo's experiences are fairly important. They even tied them to Shannon and Boone, as well as showed some of Arst's (sp?) experiences on the island, another character that we didn't see much of before he exploded, for lack of a better word.
I admit I was kind of scared when I saw that we were delving into Nikki and Paolo's past. I didn't think that pushing two more characters into the picture would help, but it turned out way better than I expected.
My favorite episode of this season, and one of my favorites of the entire show. Ten out of ten.
Lost: Par Avion (2007)
Back to Lost
Okay, even though I am an avid Lost fan, I'll admit that it seems Lost hasn't been, well, Lost this season. Though with this episode, Lost has really gotten back on track...
I'll say: this contains spoilers, so be warned.....
First of all, the Claire flashbacks were classic: the flashbacks were used to show the viewer why she made the choices she did, why she is who she is. And, the flashbacks probably gave us what seemed like the first answer in the history of the show: who Claire's father is (though it wasn't brought up til the beginning of the episode).
And in Lost fashion, it's revealed to be Christian, Jack's father. I've been wondering who it was Christian visited when he was with Anna Lucia last season. I actually presumed that it was Claire, though it turns out to be her aunt (I presume it isn't her mom according to my timeline...I could be wrong, but that'd explain why that woman was yelling at him as Claire's aunt hates him). Right when the nurse mentioned the American doctor, I remembered Claire's earlier comment about not knowing her father, and I put 2 and 2 together...
I also liked the seagull storyline. It seemed believable, unlike some of the things that have been going on...
Now to John Locke. Locke, as we all know, is one of the most important characters, though we don't know about his accident, and it also seems that he knows more than he puts on about the island (what was the eye-patch guy gonna say about him?!?!). Seems like we'll know more about him next week.
And the end of the show. WHAT was that? Jack playing football with Tom at the modern jungle village-place? The only thing I can think of is the Others blessed Jack with their unlimited knowledge as to what the heck they're doing there, so on....other than that, I have NO clue. See, that even adds to how Lost usually goes. A story is wrapped up in an episode, and a 30 second add-on at the end leaves the viewer wondering "what the...." I love it.
I really think Lost is getting back on track, and I believe it'd be even more so if it came on at 9....but that's just me.
Grey's Anatomy: Some Kind of Miracle (2007)
Classic Grey's Anatomy...
I have to say, I got worried when I saw that this episode would involve Meredith interacting with characters who are dead. First of all, it's not believable, and second of all, it's cliché. Though this is Grey's Anatomy.
I wondered what direction the show was going when I watched the first episode of this 3-episode special. It seemed too over-dramatic, and desperate to put on a good show. Last week came, and Meredith dies, and OMG.
GA is one of the shows that do the unthinkable, take huge risks, and take classic plot lines and recreate them with a twist. This was definitely a huge risk, killing Meredith (the main character). Though after the final fifteen minutes or so, it really pulled together themes from all three episodes: death, miracles, the question of if you died would people notice, suicide. Meredith's "death" incorporated all of those themes.
I also thought that when Meredith came back from the dead, it was totally unbelievable. Well, that was the point of the episode! Miracles happen, "against all logic," as Meredith said, and sometimes they just can't be explained. "Some Kind of Miracle." I can't get the scene where Cristina cried out of my head. It was so vivid, as Cristina doesn't do that. I love how Cristina has gone from this hard-as-steel surgeon, to one that does have a heart.
If you still wonder whether this episode was good: what other show could leave you honestly wondering if the main character would end up dying? Seriously?! Logic told me that Meredith would end up surviving, but another part of my believed that she just couldn't live through all of this trauma. Also, what other show could tie up everything so nicely, and so creatively? The one scene that sticks out to me so vividly, that really convinces me that the show is incredible, is one of the last ones: the one where Izzie brushes against Denny. If anything brought these shows together, it was that. One of the most memorable Grey's Anatomy moments EVER. This is show is not going anywhere.
