Tensei Shitara Suraimu Datta Ken (2018)
Surprisingly Awesome!
I started watching this anime with zero knowledge of it and low expectations. I only knew a lot of the voice actors have been in many of my other favorite anime. But just a couple of episodes in and I was hooked! It is very funny, has some good action, some touching moments, and overall is a lot of fun to watch.
I'm currently binge watching it and even though I'm only currently halfway through the first season it is already in my top 5 favorite all time anime. I am very impressed with the artwork, and the script and work of the actors is extremely good. I highly recommend watching this, as it is sure to make you smile and laugh out loud.
Mahô Shôjo Saito (2018)
Not what I was expecting, but still very good.
I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to anime, as I only have watched around 20 or so. I found this one listed on Prime Video and decided to give it a watch. It is NOT a cute or funny anime in any way, as one would assume from the title. But it is however a powerful and emotional watch.
To give fair warning to people, if you watch it you will see violence. Not just guns blazing violence but the type of dark violence that may and should make you a bit squeamish. The topics of revenge, bullying, domestic abuse, suicide, rape, transphobia, molestation, murder, and self harm are all shown in this series.
You would think with all of this that it is not worth watching. But it does show redemption, friendship, love, and the power of not giving in to the darkness. It is a complex story at times, a bit funny at others, but I give it a lot of credit for taking the bad parts of teenage life in their full misery and making it into a story that is interesting and captivating.
I gave this 9 stars only because the first episode was extremely hard to watch. It is graphic and emotional and some may need to visit their therapist after watching. If you need a trigger warning, this is it. The show moves better and faster after the initial episode, and the final episodes are the type that you don't mind binge watching for 2 hours.
So you are warned, but also if you can handle it then it's a must watch. Unfortunately too many people have this negative reviews because it was darker than the name suggested, but if you know that in advance then there should be no reason to get into it if you aren't prepared.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Surprisingly good!
So I am a fan of Will Ferrell and his silly humor. Whether it be like Anchorman or Step Brothers. I fully expected this movie to be similar.
I was surprisingly incorrect!
Don't get me wrong, there were quite a few silly parts throughout the movie. But overall this was a fun, enjoyable, and touching movie. The best way to categorize/describe this movie is an amalgam of Talledaga Nights/Wedding Crashers/Pitch Perfect. I watched it on a whim and I am glad I did!
Being an American I knew nothing of the Eurovision Song Contest, but I still enjoyed learning a bit about it. The music, while a bit silly in its portrayal, was actually extremely good! The ending song was touching and brought out the tears. There were many laughs, a few cringeworthy moments, and some really moving scenes.
Will Ferrell was very good, not great though. But Rachel McAdams and Dan Stevens were fantastic! McAdams was extremely funny and did very well lip syncing all the songs while Molly Sanden (who actually did the singing for Sigrit) was amazing! She has an incredible voice and she definitely deserves any attention gained from this movie! Pierce Brosnan was ok, and seemed a bit out of place. But overall I expected something that was silly and full of Will Ferrell's low brow humor (which I do love). But what I got was so much better and a movie that was extremely uplifting, which was even better during the dark days of the COVID-19 lockdown and the dumpster fire that is 2020.
Definitely worth a watch, and I personally have now watched it for a fifth time. It was that good. 8/10 because of how touching and funny it was. Also the songs are addicting and added to the experience! -2 for the few outlandish parts and for a somewhat roaming plot.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Inferno (2017)
Fantastic parody
So after seeing some people complain about this I had to write my first review.
If you take this video seriously, as a music video or a bonus feature, it seems pretty horrible. It's tacky and not well acted, with cheesy visuals.
However, it was not intended for that. It is a complete parody of the disco videos of the early 80s. Complete with synth music, odd colors, bad costumes, David Hasselhoff, and crappy porn star costumes. When you look at is as a parody it is really funny, and fits right in line with the GotG sense of humor. Even the lyrics invoke parody. But it's a fun way to see the main stars of the movie having some fun and poking fun at a genre and era that has a lot of emphasis in Peter Quill's life, as it was that era when he left Earth. The music he listens to, and the shows he watches are all 80's themed.
So while as a stand-alone it is a bit on the ridiculous side, if you understand James Gunn's sense of humor and understand that it is all about making fun of itself, then you will appreciate it more and find the humor in it. Plus a Stan Lee sighting is always fun!
