Blackout (2007)
Exciting but unrealistic ending
The movie was entertaining, but became frustratingly unrealistic in the last half hour. I won't tell you exactly what happened but I was yelling why don't they do this or that, or you have got to be kidding me for almost the entire last half hour. Especially the ending where the victims are located in a place where there was no chance they could have had access to, but they are still spotted immediately by their rescuers. I believe you should suspend disbelief to a point when watching a movie, but the movie makers also have a responsibility to keep things within the realm of possibility.
I am a professional firefighter so I understand that in a crisis a lot of people do stupid things and use bad tactics when facing life threatening challenges. But to me it would be more entertaining to see people who are using good judgment and not freaking out.
An American Carol (2008)
Just a little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down.
My wife and I watched the movie a couple of hours ago. It was not what we expected. There were a lot of scenes that made us laugh. There were also serious points being made with a bit of slapstick thrown in to remind that this was primarily a comedy.
My wife is a military historian. It is interesting to note that the uniforms worn by all of the soldiers from different conflicts were highly accurate. This is somewhat unusual even in serious films. I think it reflects the seriousness of the underlying message of the film.
We detected a few indirect swipes at the Obama campaign. A few people got up and left in the middle of the film. I assume they were offended by views presented that differed from their own.
We left the theater glad that we came. This is unusual for me. Generally I leave feeling ripped off by the film industry. We really enjoyed this film. It makes some serious points while making the audience laugh.
