Norbit (2007)
Ummmm Pass
There were some really funny moments in this movie, but most of it was filler between the few funny moments. Honestly how can you fill in an entire movie with fat girl jokes?
This movie is basically Eddie Murphy (Norbit/ Rasputia/Mr. Wong) on parade. They spent more time changing his makeup and not enough time witting funny jokes. I suggest you wait for the DVD to see this movie, that is unless you are a huge Eddie Murphy fan, and you want to see him do extra roles. Including the utterly useless Mr Wong who should have been played by a real Asian. The only funny thing funny about his character was when he said he didn't like black people and we know that its really Eddie.
If there was a moral lesson, to be gained from this movie, it would have to be that no matter what its best to develop a backbone. That way you are never stuck in a terrible situation with a terrible girl. This was very much the dominant big girl dates the spineless gay guy, who is afraid of coming out or afraid to say no. Only in this case he was a straight guy who had real issues sticking up for himself, and that was truly painful to watch.
It did have a bit of a romantic interlude where Eddie Murphy (Norbit) had a crush on his elementary school and orphanage playmate Thandie Newton (Kate)
Again there are some funny scenes, but overall this movie was a real sleeper.
Coffee Date (2006)
Enjoyable Date
Go see this movie you will most definitely be entertained by this realistic comedy. However more importantly it doesn't matter if you are gay or straight you will be able to relate to their pain on many levels. First off, most all of us have been miss labeled for being something we are not, at least once or twice. Better yet, maybe you have fallen for a straight guy, and let your feelings go haywire even though you know he is not capable of returning the affection. If not, I know we have all had a blind date or met someone off the Internet, and often times our date might not have been quite what we are expecting. Relating to one or all of these plot lines will make this journey truly enjoyable for you.
Yes this is a gay feature film and like most gay films, they are independently made and done so with a low budget. Yet as a member of the Gay and Lesbian community we are going to go and see this film and support the continuations of Gay and Lesbian Movies. That being said you can now go into the movie realizing it is a spectacular film even though there are no shiny sets and no blockbuster special effects, thus allowing you to focus on the plot and the storyline from the writer/director Stewart Wade. Granted plot is somewhat superficial or shallow (lacking any real or true depth,) yet there are some seriously funny one liners, with many truly touching moments, and several seriously unmanageable situations that lead to the characters struggle with their identities and deals with what makes them who they are. Todd (Jonathan Bray) plays a straight guy who meets Kelly (Wilson Cruz openly gay actor) off the Internet not realizing he is a male the meet for a coffee date that changes his life. Once they have overcome the uncomfortable, awkwardness they realize they do have some in common and become friends. Thus leading to the comedy of errors, and his miss labeled identity, for now everyone Todd knows thinks he is gay, so much that he to begins to question it.
There was a surprise cameo from Deborah Gibson (80's pop star) who plays Melissa the temptress co-worker who thinks that she can seduce all gay men.
This film is a hilarious journey full of many belly laughs, yet its a trip that may lead you to a few moments where you may get a bit Misty Eyed. Either way you will be glad that you went on this Coffee Date.
PS - I suggests that if you know someone that might be questioning their sexuality, you should bring them for the ride. Also a great date movie.
PSS - Spoiler --
I think that being the plot decided to make Todd straight in the end even after having relations with a man makes this a much better film. It kept it real, and genuine. I am glad he steered clear of the cliché Turned Gay Story line.
Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds (2006)
I Laughed so hard I cried
I saw this film at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival this week and I totally loved it!!!!! Even more than the first.
If you are ready for a Cliché, stereotypical, and yet totally hot and fun gay comedy then sign yourself up for Sloppy seconds. This sequel is very much that, all the while pushing the envelope so much further than the first chapter, Eating Out . Be warned this time its full of much more shocking and crazy situations, yet guaranteed more laughs than the first, so in fewer words if you liked the first you will love this one even more. On an exciting note this is the first ever American gay movie sequel. If you remember in part one Kyle convinces his straight roommate to pretend to be gay to get the girl he was attracted to. Well in this journey Kyle is the one who is pretending, in order to get the surprisingly hot, model Troy. Kyle fell in love or should I say lust with Troy when he modeled nude for Kyle's art class. The funny thing is Kyle pretends to be an Ex Gay to get to spend time with Troy. While doing so he gains self confidence and esteem. To be honest the acting in this movie is clearly not the best, but you soon forget about the over acting once the movie gets started. Even right from the opening scene which basically sets the mood with a homo erotic scenario where two guys were getting ready to go at it, of course with a gay guy seducing a straight guy.
This movie is full of hilarious one liners like when Tiffani says that she wishes a guy would say "I love you" instead of "Take it you tight little ..", that and many more.
I will however say that the most interesting twist is the whole ex gay ministry segment with their homo no more movement lead by Allen who obviously gets off on the other ex gays telling of their sexual slip ups with men.
This movie was Brilliant and funny, yes cliché as in it portrayed the stereotypical gay characters that we usually think of for gay drama. However I honestly know many people like this. They are often shallow and manipulative on their journey to get sex, sex and more sex. So to be honest this movie was not only full of super hot, some of which get fully naked (yes inclusive with cock shots), but it was also believable, enjoyable and ridiculously funny to the point that I was screaming.
PS. Some may say that this movie gives gays a bad name. Well if the shoe fits wear it, why do you think bath houses, and the adult book stores with glory holes are so popular? Most men have a one track mind and its sad but true, but it doesn't mean its not funny to watch
Reinas (2005)
Best Subtitled movie I have ever seen
This is an amazing journey, and the posters and advertisement does it no justice at all.
We are about to witness a huge Gay wedding in where over 20 gay couples are to be wed at the same time in Spain. If can only imagine the thought of focusing on six of those gay couples and followed them around as they are frantic and running around in a hurried attempt to get ready for their wedding. That would be pretty stressful and exciting for you would have a hilarious drama with this plot alone, right? Well what if you took the emphasis from the grooms and followed their high strung mothers. Mothers who are loving and supportive of their gay sons, yet to some degree are a bit embarrassed that they are about to attend a gay marriage and that is when you will have the real dramatic journey of our "Queens" in this tale. That is what makes this realistic, edgy, dramatic, and hilarious story. No matter what your mother is like, one of these women will probably remind you of yours. Yes, even if she is a whore and cannot keep her legs closed for more than five minutes.
This film is brilliant and clever, all the while successfully avoiding cliché stereotypes for how the gays should or may seem to appear in most movies (ex: Drugs, Clubs). Some of the couples are from mixed social classes but the film approaches all the couples as if they were any regular couples seriously getting ready for a wedding. Yet no matter how rich or poor you are, or how gay or straight you are everyone has drama as they approach their wedding day and ironing out all their kinks and making this day magical.
Thus leading us to several scenes where traumatic conflict occur and one of the most shocking scenes involve a mother and her future son in law, I was mortified. I will also say that the only unrealistic fact of this movie is that almost all of the scandals or unfortunate situations resulted in a surprisingly optimistic end.
I was most impressed with this film for the overall message was love, happiness, tolerance and letting go of prejudice. There is one warning however. You will need to pay attention for some of the flash backs even to a few hours before start to give you a bit of whiplash. You will need to watch to see where you are in the time line. Even though this can be a bit confusing I must say that this is the best subtitled movie I have ever scene. For I literally forgot I was reading the film and was focused or should I say caught up in the drama and action of the movie. Go see it for you will Love it.
PS. If there is ever an English remake I would love to be in this movie, for the only thing it lacked was a female impersonator. *wink*
Uncut (2003)
UMM it was good
If you have never seen an uncut cock or if you are somewhat curious about what an Uncut cock looks like, then you need to run out and see this movie right now. This is an up close and personal story with just that, an uncut cock. It is definitely more of an artistic movie than a suspense or plot driven movie. However its a very unique movie, very much like a hidden camera movie, shot with a single camera. The camera is hidden at the end of this mans bed, the entire time the camera is aimed at his crotch. Zooming in and out, you see him clothed you see him nude you see him hard you see him having sexual relations with girls, you also see a huge erection from a guy that is trying to seduce him. You start to feel sorry for him, as he is bedridden and would like some sexual loving, however you soon realize he is a player and a master manipulator. That is when you no longer feel sorry for him, but its funny to hear his lies to all these girls about how his accident happened and how they are the only love in his life. It is an artistic film pushing the boundaries on Male frontal nudity and for that I give it FIVE STARS. I wonder if they dialog came first and then the actual footage of the penis, or if it was really done at the same time? HMMM see if you can figure it out. ALSO Please note when the camera zooms out to see this man he is HOTT. YUMM I, I love me a good penis shot but like AOL I wish there were more that included the face.
Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story (2005)
Filthy, Gorgeous, Disgusting, Exciting, Campy, Fun, Raw, Talented
Filthy and Gorgeous are only a couple words that would describe the shows at Tranny Shack, a few others would be Raw, Exposed, Fun, Campy, Exciting, Disgusting, Entertaining, Unique, Alternative, and Truly Talented; this is not your typical drag show. This film takes you on a wondrous journey into the Tuesday Night Tranny Shack at the stud bar in San Francisco California. We learn about the life of Tranny Shack from its inception to life at the moment. If you have any appreciation for the art of female impersonation or love of drag queens this is a journey you do not want to miss. However, I must warn you this is not a film about the silicone injected fake breasted beauty pageant drag queens you are commercially exposed to this is raw and talented men that enjoy entertaining the audience for the sake of art. They used lots of great original show footage, exposing us to the shows stemming from the mid ninety's to present. My most favorite aspect of the film was the intimate look, behind the scenes footage of the one on one intimate interviews. Well I say behind the scenes for not only are they not stage, they are talking candidly on their bed, or in their yard for an interview. However several of them are completely out of costume and very normal looking and in some cases very attractive men. Giving you a glimpse of the real and true man behind the makeup, which is what I call my secret Identity, my Clark Kent to my Wonder Woman. BTW I have a slight lesbian crush on "The Steve Lady" he is not only a hot guy but a gorgeous girl. The interviews are absolutely great, they are not only talking about the bar and how long they work there but they also talk about Tranny Chasers (the straight guys that look for guys in drag for sex) and the struggles of dating gay guys that freak out when they find out who they are, "Oh my God, I love you... but I don't want to date a drag queen." That and the fun stories about how they did drag when they were little going tot he mall when they were 13. There are many, many touching and intimate moments of this film. I was most impressed with the editing for it was very much a journey, and as the audience you never got tired or bored it was constantly moving, you cannot look away for one second for you will miss something. This is was not your typical documentary it was an interesting and loving voyage. There was no specific narrator, however Heklina does become the ring leader as she is in the real show she does most of the talking, but she shares the responsibility with most of the all stars from the show. Every time you see a clip of a drag queen performing it shows both their name and the year and event the footage was taken from. Please go see this film you will love it, and after watching you will have a new appreciation and a new respect for drag queens, and if you are a drag queen you will want a job at the Tranny Shack. Who wants to plan a trip to San Francisco with me?
Adam & Steve (2005)
Excellent Gay Date Movie
This is an absolutely amazing movie, a bizarre urban love story about two gay men falling in love in the big city. I highly recommend Adam & Steve to everyone gays, and straights alike. Even though it is clearly made for the gay audience, the straight audiences will most definitely be able to laugh and enjoy this film as well. I must say this will be the next gay cult classic that everyone owns on DVD and quotes for years to come. The Director, Writer and principle actor (Craig Chester)was incredibly phenomenal, he kept it real, genuine and in times raunchy but always kept it funny. This movie was so brilliantly written with its unforgiving and realistic dialog so honest and direct. It was hilarious and confrontational much like looking into a mirror; sometimes you have to laugh at yourself. This film was extremely well thought out and its character development was thorough, you completely bought what they were selling, quirky but believable. They excellently captured the awkwardness of what it is like to not exactly fit into the world and be different or in this case homosexual. Yes this is a bizarre and unique love story, exploring what it is like to find true love in wacky world of today's self judging and self loathing society. The story starts off with an eerie and colorful flashback to the mid 80's, at first it looked a bit to creepy and was not the best first scene for a movie, yet it had great charm and you quickly appreciated the big hair and extreme use of glitter. I was most impressed with the major transformation of the characters, almost completely unrecognizable. We follow the lives of Adam (Craig Chester) and Steve (Malcolm Gets). Adam is a Jewish Goth teen who falls in love with a disco dancer named Steve. Their hook up/one night stand was not unlike the weird and random hook ups of the gay society we know and love today, both surrounding and encompassing the use of drugs and alcohol. They have a crazy encounter and do to a freak accident they are completely and permanently altered as adults, a good majority of their dysfunction stems from that one night, even though they never speak again. That is until fate brings them unwittingly together 18 years later. They have a unique sense of familiarity but don't realize do to the contrasting hair and clothing changes of the years past that they actually knew each other a long, long time ago. This film exploits their unique uncomfortableness and weirdness as adult gay men, its true and its genuine and its real. Adam and Steve are both played by openly homosexual actors, and they are both attractive and yet normal and somewhat uniquely unattractive or even nerdy; which makes their characters that much more real. Occasionally the supporting actors begin to over act, and a few of the scene's got a little cliché with the people throwing things at Adam when he did an open act of homosexuality. But even in its redundancy it was welcomed and quickly over looked. There were so many sudden moments that we as adult gay men, can relate to. For example when they are having sex for the first time, just after they started making out Steve makes a weird moaning noise and Adam in his frustration asks if Steven has just came. OMG how many times have we been there in that weird and dreaded moment, and yet the whole film is full of little moments like that where the audience is completely sucked in, and right there with the actors. The supporting cast is a couple of well know and well loved actors. Steve's roommate Michael (Chris Kattan best known from TV's Saturday Night Live), and Adam's best friend the formerly obese Rhonda (Parker Posey) who proves herself to be a great friend. Their comedic timing and charm from these two help warm the audiences to the quickness of the film. And if your a Drag Queen fan or enjoy watchers drag queens, you will be pleased to know that there is a cameo from the lovely and talented Jackie Beat, (the lead singer for Dirty Sanchez) She wrote a song for this film and sings it in the end of the film. I also love that all the gay guy extras were played by gay guys, and some of them absolutely incredible dancers, wow. If you live in a city that doesn't get the Theatrical release of such an openly gay film make sure you sign up to needfulness and save a copy of Adam & Steve today, this is a must see film you will not be disappointed I loved it, and so will you.
