Monolith (1993)
As if
There is a concept called suspension of disbelief. There was no suspension.
Singularity (2017)
Bad, very bad
I generally like John Cusack but maybe his acting skills have gone sour recently. This is a terrible movie, the script is boring, the CGI is poor, and the actors are dreadfully boring. The cover art looked interesting but the movie is unwatchable.
Mindhunter (2017)
Sophisticated thriller
This show is scary. Not in a horror genre but the suspense and intricate conversations throughout this show makes you think you are watching a non fiction docudrama. Take a movie like The Boston Strangler with Tony Curtis and couple it with a Ted Koppel from Nightline filled with factual data and you have the show Mindhunters. I really enjoyed the relationship involving the two main FBI characters. As they slowly start to develop their sense of why killers kill you have the impression that you are learning about the storyline first hand; that you are involved with the characters themselves. Watching this alone made me look out the window a few times. Creepy. Love the show. Chilling and interesting. I just finished watching season one: WOW. Spooky, especially episode 10. This series keeps you on your feet, no slouching during these viewings.
The Rain (2018)
The Rain isn't bad
I've been reading all the negative reviews for this series on Netflix. I'm not understanding why. I like dystopian movies I like the protagonist against the odds. This is a good story. The characters are interesting. I read reviews about the kid Rasmus and how annoying he is; isn't that the point of acting? You watch a movie and hate the villain; yep, that's the way it's supposed to be. The character grew up in a bunker with his sister as his only communication. He isn't supposed to have social skills he isn't supposed to be able to be around other people. He's supposed to be naïve about everything. Read up on child behavior when children are shut ins, guess what? They hinge on paranoia and become violent offenders in society because they got no experience dealing with issues.
I also like the two main characters Alba August is a great character in this series. You can plainly see that she's the leader of the group. She's also emotionally naïve although she probably entered the bunker when she was in high school, she has some social skills, she doesn't know how the world is but she has to adjust and keep her brother alive. That can't be easy.
And Mikkel Folsgaard has the only weapon; he's an ex soldier, he doesn't trust people because all he knows is infection equals death. But he sees something in Alba's character and that makes him feel like maybe you can take care of people and not always watch them die.
This is a good series start. When I was watching Firefly series when it first came out I loved the show and the characters, the network dumped it after the first season and that was a huge mistake. Its got more fan followers of the reruns than most TV series of its nature. And oh btw, that was a dystopian feature as well.
Dystopian Fans Unite! At least its not another walking dead. The dead zombies and zombie this and that, now that's boring. No zombies in this show. Watch episode "Have Faith," no zombies but pretty messed up people. I relate this series to the storyline of The Road with Viggo Mortensen. That was a great movie with a similar storyline and btw, the child in the movie was messed up in his thinking as well. Stay true to the emotional devolution as a result of isolation. I would give it ten stars if they had more stories like "Have Faith," but they will if Netflix gives this a second season. Hope.....
Altered Carbon (2018)
Great first episode
I've been itching to see a good mystery dystopian fare and here it is! Love the use of CGI and the snippets of West World, Blade Runner, and Total Recall. Not in any particular order. I enjoy the backwards story telling. The longer you watch the series the more you get to know the characters. I also enjoy the anti-hero theme. The good guy is the bad guy being the good guy. I can't wait to see more of the series. I'll probably edit this submission. But if the first episode is good the others should be also.
Black Mirror (2011)
Not sure what the hype is..
I saw three seasons of this show. There were some good, but mostly bad. I get the impression that there are different writers and different directors. When you speak of an miscellany series like Twilight Zone then, well I expect to see that. The show left me wanting. Albeit the context was supposed to be sci-fi fantasy related I've seen much better on ordinary TV. If you are bored then you can watch them but you will probably fast forward or skip entire episodes after the first few minutes. The majority of the cast are almost unknowns but with some good writing it did okay. Season 1 episode 1 I enjoyed the most. After that the rest of the season left a dull taste in my mouth.
Dark (2017)
Dark is dark
First I would like to say that I enjoy the Danish and German shows that are being produced on Netflix. I've already reviewed The Rain which I thoroughly enjoyed and this series as well. The title of the series explains the overall mood of the show. The cinematography shows dark colors, lots of grays in the film which sets the mood (try watching the show when when it's night or raining) that will get you aligned! The characters you will love to hate or hope for there is no doubt! I found the characters to be a little confusing to the story because there are many characters. I've watched different review videos on You Tube; I strongly recommend that you watch the series with an open mind and ignore these videos. You will get more out of the show when you have an unadulterated view. I really enjoyed the writing of this series-give the writers full credit they need awards for this show. Probably one of the best dystopian shows I've seen this year. You will have to watch it all the way through, don't stop after two episodes because the story gets clearer after you've seen at least half of the series. I watched the entire series twice because there was a lot I missed during the first viewing. The story has been done before, it gave me a Twilight Zone feel to it, but that's just my opinion you might see something else. I also enjoyed the character development as the show progresses you really need to listen to what the characters are saying, everything counts in this show! Overall I will look forward to season 2.
