Inside No. 9: The Referee's A W***er (2020)
"inside" no. 9
This episode of this fantastic show will always be my favorite, it's worth noting that I am a football fan and it is clearly an episode written by football fans. Giving a glimpse into the backroom of a high profile football match, the interplay between the referee and his assistants is fascinating. And obviously the most oblique and daring reference to being inside number 9 will always stand long in my memory. David Morrissey, a huge fan of football himself, gives a stellar lead performance but all of the actors leave their mark and shine in this brilliant ep.
One for the football fans for sure, but lots for everyone.
A Murder at the End of the World: Chapter 6: Crime Seen (2023)
Wonderful
When I can watch an event hinted at in the first episode but understand the two characters involved so much that I completely get why they would make conflicting decisions after the same event in the sixth then you know that a show has succeeded in writing fully formed characters, who I might not agree with but at least sympathize with. An incredibly fulfilling episode taking place largely in flashback to Darby and bills completion of their serial killer case, framed narratively by Darby reading her own book. I thought this was another fantastic ep on what may up being my show of the year in a year of succession and the bear. Let's hope it sticks the landing.
A Murder at the End of the World: Chapter 3: Survivors (2023)
It's getting so good
I had my doubts after episode 1 but it's evolved into a taught, tense, fascinating murder mystery. Ex machina meets Veronica Mars meets and then there were none. I am loving it. I've only ever seen Emma corrin in the crown and was skeptical about the amount of praise she (they, sorry) were getting after not being too convinced by the performance but Darby is an incredibly compelling character to spend time with, an outsider sleuth thrust into the world of elitist snobs and 'disruptors' she is an original creation and a perfect audience surrogate. Clive owen remains enigmatic and there are already so many suspects I can't wait to see where it ends.
