Bo Burnham: what. (2013)
Nobody is gonna relate to this review. Oh Well. "what."ever
Look. I think the best comedy shows leave a person's eyes wet. I'm elated after seeing this a third time, and I'm let down by the fact that I expected over a hundred reviews on this, and I only see twelve. In my ignored opinion, this special is just... underrated.
I have my own performance tomorrow and I'm watching this to help me mentally prepare. It's not going to be nearly as big of a crowd, and it's not going to on Netflix like "what." but it's my 6th performance and Bo Burnham is the ONLY guy in this world (so far) that I identify with as far as the anxiety, creativity, dark thoughts, desires to please people, and a craving to stand out and be unique for the sake of being unique not "Edgy" like another review on here says.
"Part of me loves you, part of me hates you. Part of me fears you." I'm BLOWN AWAY by how similar I feel to Bo on a personal level. I don't know if it's just something that creative people understand, but I wish everyone could understand. Cause otherwise I may as well be talking to the dang wall. It honestly makes me angry. I don't want to be angry. I want to understand why people don't like what Bo is trying to do. I want to know where people's distaste for... ANYTHING stems from, rather than be offended by their differing opinions.
I feel like "Inside" is the most relatable special he's ever done, and gets significantly more praise than his other specials, like this one. Rightfully and deservedly so, but still... I feel like I identify with this special the most because it's his FIRST Netflix special, and it's unlike any other comedy show I've ever seen. What an entrance he made with this one. His debut show, and yet, I feel like the crazy person in the room for liking it as much as I do. That's messed up.
It FEELS like an experience for me every time I watch it, and it just... bums me out that I can't share that feeling with anyone else. I hate feeling alone in enjoying something I consider to be beautifully crafted and brilliantly executed. He even uses his "awkward quirkiness" as comedy. I can't wrap my head around that! Maybe I'm naïve or even stupid, but man, I just love watching what I consider to be a REAL, be it, damaged, artist at work.
Whatever. I don't know if anyone is getting anything out of the message I'm trying to convey. I doubt this review is going to be helpful to anyone. So, bye.
If anyone is still reading this, thank you for your time.
The Inside Outtakes - Bo Burnham (2022)
Bo Never Wastes a Moment
I've noticed how he uses every chance he gets to turn a piece of our attention into his art. A joke, a song or a message. Someone with that level of consideration for this ADD generation deserves massive recognition, in my uneducated opinion.
I think I'm caught up now on Bo's catalog. What., Make Happy, Inside and now the Inside Outtakes. From the moment he exploded onto stage like the rockstar he is at the beginning of "what., I've been intrigued by what he may do next.
The Inside Outtakes surprised me simply by how generously entertaining it is. Even the "slower moments" pay off wonderfully.
BoJack Horseman: The View from Halfway Down (2020)
Wow... I Did Not Expect This!
I don't know what to say. The execution, philosophy, beauty, and the uncertainty of this episode is indescribable. Let me just say, a character gets an introduction like I've never heard before. Beat that mother of dragons. I hope that's not a spoiler. That's all I can say. 10/10!
The Lion King (2019)
Haha... Um... This feels like a Broadway play
I'm going to keep this simple. I see an extremely divided fan base. Many people are furious for various reasons. I get it.
My explanation for my ranking of 5
Good casting decisions, beautifully realistic African setting design, amazing if not painfully expressionless detail on the characters, another star for the WOW effort and time that was put in by the entire Disney team. And the 5th reason is decent remodeling on the music, (I think I could tell Seth Rogan was auto-tuned at a certain point however).
In conclusion, most people are going to prefer the original. It was quite amazing, that this felt far less authentic. But, whatever.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Listen To Your Inner Voice
This is NOT the Ice Age series. This isn't Incredibles 2. And it's definitely not Cars 2.
This movie has MORE reason to be here than anything I previously mentioned (Except the 1st Ice Age. That was a good movie).
The thing is, we don't have superpowers. We don't live in a world where everyone is a talking sentient automobile, but we have ALL had a childhood, at one point or another. And most of us have had to leave it behind by now.
If toy story 4 doesn't bring you back to your childhood, make you nostalgic, make you laugh, or even make you smile, then there is probably no hope for you with this movie. You might need to get that checked because you may have grown into a soulless human. No offense to soulless humans.
Getting a sequel THIS good, that works well with the story, gives some characters good arcs, introduces fun new characters, and serves justice to the world that was built for us. I'm just saying, for a sequel that we DIDN'T ASK FOR, I don't see a need to complain.
I had a surprisingly good time watching this film from start to finish, and even had a few moments of somewhat tears. Forky is delightfully hilarious. Please treat yourself with Pixar's latest animated masterpiece.
Listen to your inner voice. The one telling you to not miss this movie!
Trust me. It's one of the good ones. 10/10
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
The Writers Couldn't Count to 20 For Seasons 7 and 8
Star Wars is screwed.
This show's creators suffer from the same thing Dany suffers from. Too much power and expectation on their shoulders. They made a dumb freaking decision to wrap up the last 2 seasons in 13 total episodes instead of 20, which is 7 more character developing episodes we are MISSING! And now the story, and we, all have to endure the consequences.
Arya didn't stab Cersei Lannister through her pregnant gut to avenge her brother's wife that died the same way at the wed wedding. Instead, Cersei dies from rocks falling on her because, only 6 episodes.
Jamie dies with her instead of perhaps living, or dying differently because they didn't have time to do anything else with him.
The Knight king and Bran didn't exchange ANY words, and the Night King died way too quickly. Not enough time to wrap up the story properly.
Drogon roasted the iron throne to lava, and Jon Snow's identity being Aegon Targarion doesn't even matter now! Bran has STILL never controlled the dragon ONE time! Drogon remains missing, probably eating his "mother's" body, cause, ya know, he eats when he's upset. Like we all are about this entire season.
NOT... ENOUGH ... EPISODES!!! They replaced good, proper character development with cool visuals and abrupt moral compas shifts that made NO sense! Burning children makes Dany no better than Anakin Skywalker. And the writing was no better either.
Both Any and Dany from both shows shifted way too quickly into utter villainy without proper build up, and gradual moral code breaking. Like Breaking bad, it took 4 seasons for a certain character to poison a kid. But, the moral decline of that character MADE sense!! This entire 8th season of Game of Thrones does NOT make sense. And I think it's because it was too rushed.
On behalf of the disappointed fans, and myself, I'm sorry we were put through this. I give the episode a 3 out of 10 for trying to end the best it could... except for the stupid final scene as Jon and the wildlings all walk into the woods because... ??? That makes me mad enough almost to give it a 2/10... but Jon killing Dany made me smile pretty dang big =D
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
Really??
That can't be the end for Cersei! I was hoping she was going to get gut stabbed by Aria the same way they did with Aria's sister in law at the Wed Wedding.
Honestly... I just don't know how I feel about this show anymore. For many reasons I'm too lazy to write about. The biggest reason, is because I feel like I could've written it better... kind of. Some parts anyway.
My advice? Read some of these other reviews because they explain the issues with this episode much better than I ever could. And there are MANY issues indeed.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
The Long Episode
Just enjoy some good television everybody. Such a beautifully crafted, well orchestrated battle sequence that ends on a rather satisfying note. I loved this episode. It delivered in every way I could've asked for. Thank you. 10/10!
I look forward to the final 3 episodes!
Game of Thrones: Winterfell (2019)
And So It Begins... Fingers Crossed
Look, this episode was good, but it isn't one of the best. It continues off of tone of season 7, therefore we're still just building up to the ultimate climax.
I didn't realize how many characters are STILL alive! And I'm sorry, but... I just want to see MOST of them die. Except for a select few. DId anyone significant die in this episode? ... hmm... I can't remember.
That aside, it's not a bad build-up episode. I'm just an arrogant, skeptical fan that wants exactly the pay-off ending we've been waiting 2 years for to conclude this legendary show! ... No pressure, much anxiety.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
Haters are gonna hate... but Creators gotta create
I think we've reached a time in the world where there are too many high expectations towards cinema and animation. (those are different things, right?) Which inevitably results in disappointment and unnecessarily spirit crushing criticism.
I just left the theater, and I swear to you, I can't think of anything to complain about.
Which is bizarre... considering half the world seems to hate this movie. I'm envious of them. I feel too naive giving it a cheesy 10/10, but I just cannot get myself to give it a 9/10 WITHOUT a good reason...
and I don't have one.
Here's my spoiler free take...
My opinion: it was insanely entertaining! With the film still fresh on my mind, I'm just processing everything that took place within it's two hour run time.
My only microscopic complaint is... ... I suppose it felt like it might've ended too abruptly.
Nevertheless, this is a really really GOOD animated film, slightly mature in some moments, but very intricately pieced together, and well done. It is a very satisfying sequel to the original. You WILL laugh a lot. I hope.
Thanks for reading my spoiler free review. XD
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT.
Okay... Jack-Jack ... is clearly the only TRULY incredible one here, amirite?
I mean did he... like ACTUALLY, even for just a moment, send Dash and Violet briefly to the other dimension!?!? AND IT NEVER GETS MENTIONED AGAIN!???!?!
Can Jack-jack send other people to the astral dimension or something? Cause... THAT needs to be talked about.
Okay, spoilers done.
Please go watch it. Enjoy it.
Or don't, if you're one of those people.
