Batman & Robin (1997)
The Best Batman Film of All Time?
You can keep your "Boring Bale" trilogy and indecipherable Bane and give me Tim Burton / Joel Schumachers Batman quadrilogy and day of the week.
The sets, costumes & practical effects make this film an absolute treat for the eyes. Schwarzeneggers Freeze & Thurmans Poison Ivy shine as a hammy homage to the original Adam West Batman and they both look amazing in their respective roles and it totally fits this gothic & colourful world. Personally I think all the one liners are brilliant!
Yes the Bat-Gadgets are over the top similar to OG tv show but this is what Batman should be. Clooney certainly lack the cool, style & gravitas of Keaton but luckily there are enough character to distract.
I seriously cannot understand some of the comments and the low star rating, I know Batman is beloved but I think people take films like this way to seriously.
No it's not Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas or Apocalypse Now but it's not trying to be! Watch it when it's dark out on the bigger screen you can find and enjoy the ride!
The Watcher (2022)
It's watchable.
Yes it does a fairly good job of making you feel uneasy (at first) until you stop investing in the creepy side characters as they literally add nothing. And yes it's a pretty good cast, but the plot quickly starts to display more holes than a Swiss cheese which was when I really checked out, and then it starts to become absurd. On the positive keeps you guessing and I really wanted to like it but I stopped caring.
I guess the moral of the story is don't move to the suburbs - it's full of creepaziods, keep a loaded shotgun handy for all of the unwanted neighbours who seem to delight on trespassing on your property, and if you suspect you (clearly) live in a house of evil either burn it down or sell it fast.
I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
Vikings: Homeland (2017)
Just Wow!
I'm not gonna spoil it but I got actual goosebumps when Ivar was goading the Saxon army. This is an epic show and this is another 10 out of 10 episode!
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Catherine O'Hara steals the show
In this day and age 20 minute sitcoms are never going to have groundbreaking storylines but luckily all you need is a great cast and characters to make a show like this so enjoyable. The ensemble of supporting characters ( Twyla, Ronnie, Bob, Ray etc. ) are all perfect in their own way and can command laughs all on their own.
"The Kids" David & Alexis are annoying and charming in equal measure, they definitely grow on you as the show progresses. Alexis' hinge wrists particularly are distracting and darling all at the same time. Chris Elliot is brilliant as the very odd mayor / hotel assistant, and Jocelyn is delightfully charming as she morphs from hot wife to hot mom!
Eugene Levy brings his charm and eyebrow magic to every scene as Johnny Rose. His relationship with Moira is so lovely and is the real heart of the show. Which brings me to Moira...
Catherine O'Hara is the star of this show for me! From her constant wig changes to her insane outfits, her unplaceable accent and they way she says words (Bebe) had me in stitches pretty much anytime she's on screen. Season 5's "The Crowening"is a particular treat! I can't believe I'm ACTUALLY going to miss her character - this has never happened to me before!!!
I foolishly avoided this show for many years as I thought the name was stupid - please don't make the same mistake!
Stay Close (2021)
I believe the correct term is whack
Only the acting in this saves it from a 1 star.
Great talent but painfully drawn out story takes all the suspense and excitement out of the show. Attempts at creating intrigue with flashbacks become annoying without any meaningful payoff.
But most of all James Nesbits "detective" who links everything that happens back to the same cold case is really annoying. He has zero perspective as an investigator. Sack Him!
Space: Above and Beyond (1995)
Gone too Soon
Decent special effects for the time, great cast of actors and storytelling that draws a sci-fi head like me right in.
Intelligent world building which whilst is very rooted in military structure and technology from the present day and past is easily looked past as you're so invested in the characters, SAAB doesn't waste time on trying to be Uber futuristic, in fact the retro contrast makes it quite unique and it sure doesn't feel dated for it's 25 year age.
Absolutely love the spaceships especially the hammerheads, shades of Battlestar Galactica when it comes to the cockpit shots and their ability to 180 mid flight is very cool.
Real shame theres only 1 season as I think with a bigger budget this show could have gone far, and I think with todays effects could be a scifi hit (Reboot anyone?)
VIVA SCVN Saratoga !
Chicago Party Aunt (2021)
It's the tits!
Brilliant show, I just wish there were more episodes and that Chicago party aunt was my aunt. Great selection of characters and voice artists / actors to play them. Roll on season 2! Take the money wasted on making "Married at first sight" and plough it into 25 episode seasons I say.
The Purge (2013)
Terrible / Makes no sense.
So all crimes including murder are legal for one night in America. So logically you spend thousands of bucks on home security which is redundant 364 days of the year instead of taking a flight to the Caribbean for the weekend?
The main guy is a security expert but only has a metal gate to stop intruders getting in which is easily breached with a pick up.
A stranger is let in to the house so what does the family do? Instantly split up and run around in the dark.
A murderous gang breaches the house so what does the family do? Instantly split up and run around with guns, never checking who's behind them, wandering into rooms with reckless abandon until they either kill someone or get captured and saved, but never take their attackers superior weapons.
The only saving grace is it was over pretty swiftly and Trump never saw this and made it a real thing.
One of the worse films I've seen in a very long time. Avoid at all costs!
The Guilty (2021)
Yeah.... Nah
Was not good. I was waiting for something to happen and then it ended.
Superstore (2015)
It's really a 9.5
TV doesn't get much better than this.
Yes it's not The Wire or Game of Thrones but the characters are perfect and as a former store worker I can definitely relate to the antics and the way the melting pot of people all get along.
I can't recommend this highly enough ! #teamsandra.
I Care a Lot (2020)
The worst film I've ever seen
Peter Dinklage saves this from zero stars. Thank god Rosalind Pike dies at the end. I hate her in this
Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Semi-Detached (2004)
Francie Swift is Magnetic
Francie Swifts show stealing portrayal of Nelda is incredible in this episode. She made me feel attraction, fear and sympathy for her character from first to last scene. This depth of character is why I love the Law & Order universe and once again another master class of casting!
The Boys (2019)
It has potential but
Billy Butchers god awful accent (see Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins for reference) and faked cockney geezerishness range from distracting to downright unwatchable. As one of the leads his character is all over the place, Insulting his team and telling them to "do one" and asking for help in the same breath. Also there's an aquatic superhero who can talk to animals but yet to see in the water. I think with a bit more flushing out of the characters this would be a far superior show, and Karl Urban is from New Zealand - just let him speak in his native accent it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to us!
