Signal Rock (2018)
Immersive film on the realities of Filipino island life
This masterpiece really draws upon the viewer to be immersed into the multi-faceted lives of the Filipino community in the context of a far-flung island with little access to even telecommunications. The film is able to string together the ensemble cast, with every character playing a part in the unfolding story and the ever present portrayal of the Filipino quality of "bayanihan".
Bakwit Boys (2018)
Beautiful music, heartwarming brotherly love but tainted by romantization of culture of corruption
The film starts off with its fan service but quickly gives focus to its beautiful music. Really loved the heartwarming brotherly love that is emphasized throughout the film. I found the film's message to be absurd, it is summarized with a quote from Rose's mother (non verbatim): "Sometimes you have to cheat in life since the clean path is unfair". The film tries to be practical and normalizes, even romanticizing, corruption which is prevalent throughout the film. The only way to enjoy the film is to act like the Bakwit Boys, is to be willfully ignorant of the different manifestations of corruption throughout the film.
The Day After Valentine's (2018)
Came for the indulgent dialogue but left unsympathetic towards the characters
The regression of Bea's character into obsession felt rushed and inconsistent. Coupled with the absurd motivations of JC's character that leaves audience unsympathetic, the film felt as if we're being thrown around instead of being moved by the characters' plights. The noticeable degration of visual quality during the Lanai scenes is also worth mentioning.
