Bandit Queen (1994)
Everything but "true"!!!
This movie is everything but the true story of Phoolan Devi. Director Shekhar Kapoor's claims are countered by the fact that he made the entire movie without even once meeting Phoolan Devi, on whose life this movie is supposed to be based! The excuse being that meeting the woman would have interfered with director's conception of the story! The film wastes the opportunity of sensitizing the society of the plight of low-caste women in the Indian society and ends up as a stereotype portraying Phoolan Devi as an angry woman whose sole motivation is revenge. No wonder, this Shekhar Kapoor's film was successful in the west as it catered to their non-bollywood tastes!
Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar (2006)
Stale and frustrating
Well I decided to watch this movie right after I saw Pyaar ke side-effects and was of course expecting something on the same lines here as well. Alas, how could I expect Bollywood to make me happy twice in a row! I was surprised to see the director making such a movie and even if he filmed this, deciding to release it! It appears that this movie is at least 10 years late compared to the present state of Bollywood. Everything, from the songs to the plot, stinks of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, DDLJ, Hum Saath Saath Hain etc.
Its amazes me to no extent that directors did not realize that the masses no more want those sob-stories of "Ideal families"! Karan Johar still has been surprisingly doing that job well and this should be left for him to do! The story-line is predictable, songs are early 90's, all in all I regretted watching this movie. It was far from being comic, in contrast to what the name suggested.
Salaam Bombay! (1988)
The other side of Indian Shining.
Not too far away from those sky-towering buildings housing corporate offices the biggest global business establishments, there exists another Bombay. This movie takes you on nostalgic ride of the so-called real Bombay. It reminds you of the stark reality that still haunts India, 18 years after this movie was made. In a country that is run by the whims and fancies of a small fraction of its population, this film showcases the true but bitter truth and tries to present the other side of the coin. There is still complete darkness in the lives of those millions in spite of the great strides the country has made towards becoming a global economic and military power. It is these people that have to be taken care of and that is exactly what Mira Nair has tried to communicate through this film and of course, she has done it really well.
Knock Knock, I'm Looking to Marry (2003)
Don't even think about it!
Well, this movie is right up there in the list of the worst movies I have ever watched. And I am sure it will win hands down.
Believe me, you will regret watching this movie. The plot is predictable, the cast is inexperienced and the movie is certainly not worth the effort. The acting is worse than what you would find in a school-play. The storyline is quite interesting and the movie does succeed in bringing about far and few light moments. A lot needs to be done with the acting. The only thing that was commendable was the honest effort that the two lead actors had put in, otherwise the movie was just not worth it.
