The Little Mermaid (2023)
Not Impressed sadly
I have seen the animated version many many times over the years. This movie was dark, and failed to bring the Disney magic that I have come to expect from their films. Although it followed the story to some degree, they made several changes, deviating from the original, that left holes in the story. I was very disappointed by the casting choices and wish they would have attempted to match the original characters. As it stands, they should have just created a completely different story. This was not my cup of tea and I found myself checking the time repeatedly waiting for it to be over. I'm sure there are many people who have not watched the animated version as many times as I have that would enjoy this, it just was not for me.
Ghost Story (1981)
Excellent Haunting Tale
I first saw this film years ago... It is one of the few recommendations I make when asked for a good "Ghost Story". The cast features several legends including Fred Astaire, John Houseman and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. A young Alice Krige shines in the lead, giving an excellent performance.
This film has a truly spectacular plot, which carries through to the very last scene. Yes, there are jump scares, yet it does not rely on them to keep you on the edge of your seat. Author Peter Straub created this haunting tale which takes the audience on a delightfully creepy adventure as told by the 'Chowder Society". If you have not yet seen this - I highly recommend it!
Where the Scary Things Are (2022)
Another 90 minutes of my life WASTED
I love horror movies and was really looking forward to this as Halloween approaches. I was hoping it would be similar to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" - group of kids, various monsters, a few jump scares. NOPE. The only emotion I had while watching this was sadness that it had not yet ended. The idea was decent - a teacher gives his students an assignment to create an urban legend. I was really hoping for several new urban legends to pop up, showcasing the creativity of the class. As it turns out they give us only one slimy monster. Yes, there is some blood/gore but I am still baffled that this received an "R" rating. What a disappointment!!
Christmas Do-Over (2006)
Christmas Fun, We LOVED it!
First, I'm going to start out by saying that some of the reviews were a bit harsh... I have seen Groundhog Day, and numerous other films with a similar "repeat" pattern but this one WAS enjoyable, and quite funny! It has become a holiday favorite for us.
The Nun (2018)
If you like being scared... this one does not disappoint
We just saw "The Nun" in the larger than life Imax presentation. I will start out by telling you that we live for the Conjuring Universe and were very excited about this film. I wanted this to scare me and yes, it did not disappoint. At one point, mid way through the movie, I noticed my husband had crouched down in his seat and my sixteen year old son was nervously watching through his hands. So - in my book - mission accomplished!! This one barely gives you time to breathe - before scaring you over and over and over and over....
