The Following (2013)
An okay thriller
I really wanted the first episode to be awesome, but it wasn't. I am big mystery/thriller/mystery crime drama buff, so when something hits me the first 20 minutes then I know it is going to be a winner. I was so wrong with this episode which began great and then faded slowly away during the ending scenes. I kept asking questions such as, Why not begin with how the villain plotted his escape from prison? How did Ryan move into the active FBI work so quickly since he appears as an alcoholic? Why are all the interior sets so white? How does someone get past security with a ice pick? If I have a nail file in my purse, I am asked to open the purse for inspection. Why does Ryan want to go after this killer by himself? I don't care how great the basic idea is when a script begins to take too many diversions from reality, then I start to lose interest in everything. Is the show fantasy or crime drama?
Not one character was fully developed, all we got were flashback seconds and these flashbacks scenes can be wonderful if they are used to support one story. Everyone does not require a flashback scene.
In short, The Following is a story about finding the copy cat killers influenced and guided by one arch evil villain. Haven't we seen this before, such as The Mentalist?
Purefoy is terrific my only two cent worth of ideas is that evil does not have to look evil. Really good evil always looks like an angel from the outside.
Bacon either needs to play the part of a drunk with a whole lot of problems or play the part of a serious FBI serial killer investigator. Please Mr. Bacon do not try to combine these character ideas because if you do it will become revisions of the character of Monk or Columbo or Patrick Jane. Please do something different with Ryan, you are a wonderful actor with an unlimited talent for developing complex characters.
