Paranormal Activity (2007)
Nothing special, but nothing bad
Okay so this may not be the best movie of the year and i know this movie has received a lot of backlash for not being as scary as it was hyped, but in reality this isn't a bad movie. I mean it's not that scary except for a few moments but it's really all about just watching all the events happening. I find it a very interesting movie about activity in a house and it's just simply fun.
And unlike all the other pseudo-documentary films out there where you can't see anything because of all the ridiculous camera movements, this movie's use of a tripod makes it more enjoyable simply because you can see everything that is happening.
It's not gonna change anything about horror movie's and it's not super scary, it's just a solid fun movie that is best enjoyed with a bunch of friends.
Avatar (2009)
A Motion Picture Masterpiece? No. A Film That Changes Cinema? Not Really. A Solid Good Time at the movies? Absolutely.
Cameron has directed some pretty stellar movies over his career. From Terminator to Alien to Titanic, he really hasn't made a bad movie. But after Titanic he spent the last decade making and trying to build up his new movie which he dubs "will change film making."
If he was intending on changing film making in the way that 3D glasses will be more acceptable in movies then he succeeded. If he was intending on creating new character archetypes and changing the way storytelling is done then he didn't. But despite the obvious "Dances with Smurfs" joke that everyone and their mother has already mentioned, the movie is pretty damn impressive. Sure it doesn't have the most original story but the execution is really well done.
For me this is really the first 3D movie that succeeds mainly because it doesn't feel like a gimmick is being forced on you. It's simply there to give you a more realistic feel and its easily the best looking movie of the year. Cameron's obvious strengths are in directing action sequences and this is easily seen in the final 40 minutes of the movie. As for the acting he did a pretty good job there too. Zoe Saldana is the star of the show and was obviously wasted in Star Trek. All the other actors are maybe a little above average and they advance the story very well.
On the script level, the film feels a bit clunky at points. Most notably is in the opening 20 minutes of the film where everything feels rushed. It jumps almost immediately into the story instead of easing us in. Also the last 40 minutes of the movie which is just a big action movie essentially, the script also feels dumbed down a bit. But despite this problem the script works more often then it doesn't.
As for the characters, although most of the acting is good, the characters are very two- dimensional. They're characters you seen in other movies before and nothing new is added to them. But the movie is really plot driven or character driven so it is easily overlooked.
Really this movie is all about the visuals and more importantly the 3D. I have had a really bad hatred for 3D in the past so when Cameron pulled this off by creating a subtle effect, it proved that 3D can work for a movie, even though the movie doesn't actually need it. But it's proof that it doesn't need to be shoved in your face. All the colours and effects of the movie make it feel more like a roller coaster. I won't spend to much on the story other than saying while not original or extremely deep, it is very well told and keeps the movie going.
So is it worth it? Don't go in expecting the most intelligent film of the year but you should expect the best looking one. Technologically Cameron did succeed on making his movie, changing cinema technically and even if it is slightly empty in the middle it is one hell of a good time at the movies. Especially in 3D.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Cinema is evolving
This movie has received a lot of great reviews and I don't think it needs to be said again... but everything about this movie is fantastic. The acting is great, the story is excellent, the characters are extremely well developed, and the action is great.
This movie is a work of art. It shows that no matter what kind of source material you have you can make a compelling story with all the characters likable and develop them well. I can't even consider this an action film. It deserves to be considered a crime drama. It is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.
Hopefully directors can learn from this film and maybe more films like this will be made
Quantum of Solace (2008)
A solid action film, but falls on the dialog
After seeing Casino Royale I was so excited to hear about Quantum of Solace and it's production. I was hoping for another great film in the bond franchise.
Then I began to hear the reviews that were getting mixed, so i wasn't sure what to expect. This was a good thing though in my opinion because i could go into the movie with a neutral look on the movie.
Well i have to say that I was very satisfied with the action that this movie gave, but was disappointed by the fact the dialog gave me a feeling of emptiness.
I was hoping for more of a character development for Bond in this one after seeing C.R. but as M said in the movie, he is mostly fueled by rage throughout the movie about the events in Casino Royale (which I won't spoil).
The movie is more about Bond getting revenge than anything else and that is why there is so much action and why many of the other scenes fell somewhat bland.
But overall if you accept the fact that this movie is for Bond and his need for revenge, then you will enjoy the action. The movie's action will make up for the flaws for it's dialog and direction and that is why I think it is a fitting sequel for, in my opinion, the best bond film of the franchise.
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
Meh...
First I'll start out saying that this is in fact a really enjoyable game.
I got this game a couple weeks after the release due to the fact that I couldn't manage to get my hands on it. But i had heard things from my friends. I had some friends claiming it was "epic" and "greatest game ever". But I also heard bad things as well.
Well, because of this, I went into this game with a kind of feeling of not sure what i was going to get out of this game. Now i did enjoy Vice City and San Andreas, so i figured i would enjoy this game.
Well that is what i got from this game. I played the story and online as well. So I'll start with the story line.
Well I absolutely loved the plot to the game. It was entertaining enough to be considered a movie or TV show. I really got a sense of connection with the characters. But when it came to the core gameplay of the story mode I found myself feeling a little empty Many missions seemed a little repetitive and there we're few missions that really stood out. It seemed like I'd seen them already. And that's because i pretty much had. Much of the game's missions were pretty much recycled from the old games. But i figured the multiplayer would make up for it.
Well the multiplayer is somewhat fun but it wasn't as fun as i hoped it would be. I was hoping for something different but it didn't have as much to offer as i thought it would. Although Halo doesn't have much variety after a while, I still find it more entertaining due to the fact the it's more of a game you just hang out on with your friends. It didn't take long before all of my friends were back playing Halo 3 or COD 4 as well.
In short I found the game entertaining for a few good weeks but after a while it gets to be the same. I still occasionally pop it in for some fun. It is a fun game, but now most of my friends are seeing it as a waste of money and are trading it in for other games. But for me I still do enjoy it and would recommend it. But it's more of a rent for me and not a buy.
