Life (2007)
Top notch show
Life is the highlight of my weekly TV viewing. Damian Lewis, a fantastic actor whose talents encompass an endless range, personifies the Charlie Crews character perfectly. Life is well written with intriguing plots and subplots, each of which keep me glued to my TV, anxious to see each moment, but crest-fallen when the hour ends. While many of the cop dramas currently being aired utilize interesting story lines, Life concentrates on the characters and on developing and deepening their ongoing relationships. Additionally, the concept of the "plot" which sent Charlie to prison in the first place providing a means to involve the viewer in this serial type drama is unique to weekly evening television I think. Containing both intense drama and the flair of humor, this show is definitely a winner. I anticipate enjoying it for many seasons to come.
Keane (2004)
Mesmerizing !
Not having had opportunity to see Keane in the theater, I was eager to purchase the DVD. I popped it in the player, intending to see only if it played okay and planned to watch it completely later. Well, I never moved another inch out of my chair until the final scene. Damian Lewis did not play a role; he BECAME Willian Keane. Very few actors could reach into the depths of their souls for that kind of a searing performance. Although many are able to provide a few minutes of insanity in a movie, Lewis kept it up, scene after scene after scene, fluctuating from screaming violence to a quiet, hopeless terror, and then to a nearly normal calm, only to slide abruptly into the pit of madness once again. I have since viewed it three more times, each time appreciating the talents of the actor, the skill of the photographer and the wisdom of the director which has provided us with this view into a truly sad aspect of the human condition. We need more such work.
Friends & Crocodiles (2005)
Worth Watching
I enjoyed Friends and Crocodiles and strongly suggest viewing it more than once. More nuances are then perceptible which fleshes out the story line that otherwise is convoluted and can be confusing. Both Paul and Lizzie demonstrate an extreme level of self control, although each of a different nature and each exhibited in vastly different ways. Lewis and May are exceptionally well suited for those two roles and do an excellent job of keeping the viewer focused on their personalities and the theme, rather than have attention wander off on other characters or subplots. The interplay between the two of them can easily be viewed as signifying human interaction in areas other than the business world.
