Bravo. A little too close to home huh boys?
8 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Bravo. A little too close to home huh boys? I'm glad I watched this and ignored the negative reviews- I imagine many reviewers identify with nice guy character Hap. Here's the thing most women figure out about these kinds of self proclaimed "nice guys"- it's a facade. Neatly and methodically dismantled by writer/ director Neil LaBute as Hap himself is.

Excellent dialogue, brilliant casting and acting. Up there with The Love Witch and Promising Young Woman (amongst others) in the realm of female revenge/ horror. I'm not sure what people were expecting- a twist at the end where he survives? The point is you know exactly what's going to happen to him. What we're watching is Hap's unfettered male privilege keep him from even considering a woman might not be the prey in this situation but a very dangerous predator. Despite the numerous and bloody red flags.

Quietly devastating portrait
25 December 2020
Quietly devastating yet ultimately uplifting film. It captures the particularly female experience of putting others needs ahead of one's own- and this being the expectation of the people around the main character. We are introduced to character after character happily and quite blindly taking advantage and even glorifying her selflessness. The scene where the director of the play toasts Kate is perfect. The psychological brutality of the movie is hidden by how normalized this all is- how easy it is to just not see.
