Family Guy: Brian & Stewie (2010)
They tried something and it worked
I've been watching Family Guy for a long time now, and I've always told myself and others if you don't take it seriously it's really good. This was an episode to take seriously, an episode where Seth Macfarlane and the writers tried something different for there 150th.
Brian and Stewie consists of one setting and two characters basically just sitting talking and waiting.
The episode explores the complex unique relationship of Brian and Stewie eventually getting deep with Brian confessing about how he really thinks about himself as well as Stewie opening up about his friendship and feelings for Brian.
While Family Guy has never been a show that has had any reason to get as deep as this, Family Guy does it well remarkably well in a 30 minute story about two unique characters talking about love, redemption, purpose and friendship.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A perfect blend of Dark Humour and Realism
I'll be perfectly honest in saying that i've never really enjoyed these kinds of films, where an impending disaster is the films subject, but Adam Mckay, who's work has extended to recent Oscar winning films such as The Big Short and Vice, does a very impressive job in injecting comedy, dark humour, sadness, hope and overall frustration into a film that may very well be a big problem for humanity in the coming years.
Don't Look Up follows the story of two low level Michigan Astronomers, Professor Randall Mindy played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Katie Dibiasky played by Jennifer Lawrence who discover a comet hurtling through space that is on a direct collision course with Earth, and follows there journey as they desperately try to warn Earth of the impending devastation and disaster this Comet will present.
Backed up by an all star cast with Oscar winners and Oscar nominees such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep and recent newcomer Timothe Chalamet, Don't Look Up does a good job in injecting humour and hope into a topic that no one really wants to admit is a possibility, but Don't Look Up is impressive in forcing audiences to realise what may happen if something like this does happen.
Don't Look Up has a good balance between dealing with the deep emotional themes as well as injecting comedy with a top notch screenplay that at times, honestly feels like what all of us are really thinking. With an all star cast that boasts some intriguing, exaggerated and believable performances, most notably from Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio who's performances bring fourth a sense of legitimate concern then just regular acting.
Don't Look Up comes across as a charming, sad, frustrating, humorous film about the potential end of the world, and will go down as possibly one of the best and the most beautiful Netflix Original movies of all time.
Rick and Morty: Rickdependence Spray (2021)
Disgusting and utterly stupid
Stupidest episode I've seen of Rick and Morty by far, not to sure what the writers were thinking but this episode just excels in the worst ways. We have giant semen monsters, pregnant horses and a giant egg, maybe this episode is a clear sign that this show is done and has taken its fan following and success for granted.
Rick and Morty: One Crew over the Crewcoo's Morty (2019)
So dumb and boring
This episode fails across the board. So predictable, so cliche, so hard to understand and keep track of, such a friggin letdown.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Trying (2020)
Too serious
I didn't mind this episode but it definitely was a let down from some of the really great earlier episodes such Pimemento and Captain Kim. Seemed too serious and personal for my taste and had a much more different tone from some of the goofier episodes before it.
Good Boys (2019)
Funny and stupid, but a damn good time
Good boys tells the story of three boys in there tweens who are struggling to survive life in 6th grade. They struggle with normal school problems such as parental divorce, young love and trying to become cool. The boys will take one adventure that will make them grow as men and humans and also test there boundaries towards one another. The films take on how elementary school boys are very close to to the pressures of high school such as kissing and trying to fit in. Memorable performances by the three main actors including 'Wonder' actor Jacob Tremblay sells his performance as a struggling young kid just trying to fit and make his way in the world and have the courage to ask his female crush. This film is wickedly inappropriate, funny but overall a real damn good time.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
What was predictably a cute, funny animated Disney movie
Toy story 4 gives us a film that by many account was not necessary, and that Toy Story 3 already gave us a big theatrical end to the Toy Story franchise. But then Disney gave us this new trailer for a new movie, and all of us probably groaned at the thought of Disney making more movies. But hold on for a minute because this movie was actually pretty awesome. It gave us time with a new kid Bonnie, gave us new settings including a carnival and a antique shop, and let us check back in with some of Disney's most popular and well known characters. Also including new characters which definitely added a new touch of hilarity to the film, one who was voiced by Matrix actor Keane Reeves. To add one aspect of the film that I didn't enjoy was the aspect of the creepy Slappy like dummy's from the antique shop. This is a kids film, not a horror movie. To add something like that to a Toy Story movie, especially a Disney film. Is very risky and might've scared children who watched this film. In conclusion Toy Story 4 was a fun, clever and well written movie that will make people shed a few tears a long the way, and definitely deliver a few laughs.
Shazam! (2019)
Good film, with tons of room for improvement.
Let me start off this review with saying that this was not a completely awful movie. Along side other DC films such as The Dark Knight and Superman, this was definitely the one that was the most goofy and lighthearted. Although the tone of the movie is somewhat dark with the concept of the seven deadly sins and there frightening appearance, though the vision of a 14 year old being a superhero draws the dark tone to a more goofy perspective. Good performances from actor Zachary Levi and Mark Strong were definitely what made me enjoy the film. And don't forget actor Dijmon Hounshou whose performance elevated the movie (although we all know that he can do way better). The one aspect of the film that was a let down was the strange screenplay, which was full of unnecessary impulses that at times felt a bit strange and stupid. Although it at times felt a bit annoying, this dark and goofy DC film is one in a million alongside the more dark and stern DC movies before it.
Green Book (2018)
A remarkable film that tells an unbelievable story of friendship.
Green Book tells the story of night club bouncer Tony 'lip' Vallelonga, who becomes the driver of African american pianist Dr Don Shirley. The movie is remarkable in its portrayal of two men both dealing with the own problems, with perfect examples of classic 1960's racism which is dealt heavily in the film. Viggo Mortensen gives an absolute stunning performance as an Italian american man. Mahershala Ali creates an almost magical performance with his character. It is with these two actors and there chemistry on screen together that creates a fantastic film. Green Book is by far one of the best movies of the year, and I am so glad to have gone and seen this.
The Grinch (2018)
An unexpectedly good Christmas film
I took my sister to see this for her birthday, and had some pretty bad expectations of what the film was going to be like. I was surprised to find that that the film actually contained some good genuine funny scenes and had a good message about the sprit Of Christmas. It was however not as good as the original 2000 'How the grinch stole Christmas' starring Jim Carrey. Although this film could be better it was genuine funny film perfect for families and kids.
Aquaman (2018)
A fantastic film that will not disappoint!
A went to see this film at a spur the moment thing on a Thursday night not really knowing what to expect as I'd already read some good and bad reviews. I was surprised to find a surprisly good film about a half human half Antlatian called Arthur, who challenges his half brother to his rightful place as king to stop war against the humans. Director James Wan outdoes himself by creating a great DC film that goes alongside all our favourites such as Batman and Superman. Main actor Jason Momoa does an outstanding performance by really embracing and taking on the tough character of Aquaman. The movie does however stay true it's comic book by not only introducing Arthur's brother King Orm but also introducing Aquamans Nemesis, Manta. Aquaman is a truely fantastic film that DC lovers will enjoy and a movie that family's can go and see for a movie night.
