The Magdalene Sisters (2002)
Very moving
I have seen plenty of depressing Irish movies before; this one is miserable but it makes the blood pump! Right into the story you feel for Margaret; raped by her cousin and blamed for it. You feel sympathy for Bernadette; punished just for flirting with some boys and Rose; a sweet young woman who has a child out of wedlock.
I wanted to strangle every single Nun in this film; the cruelty and the use of the promise of Paradise to force the girls into slave labor. There are other girls introduced into the movie; Crispina ends up in a terrible state of mind because of a certain involvement with a Priest and Una is threatened and beaten by her father and she becomes a Nun.
The movie makes you cry and you become more than angry at the Nuns, the Irish government, and the Irish people themselves.
This movie is just a treat and I love it more than anything; it's a definite favorite of mine!
The Virgin Queen (2005)
,,,another one?...
Don't get me wrong; the series itself I felt was well done and the script was decent. Some of the actors I felt weren't as strong as I would have preferred.
I think some people have already mentioned this but I will put my two cents in; Enough of Queen Bess! I have seen at least 4 different versions of Elizabeth I in the last 10 years. What is going on? There are other lesser known monarchs that need to have their stories told. Eleanor of Aquitaine? Edward II (openy gay English King who got a hot poker up his butt at the end of his life)? Richard III? War of the Roses? Come on Hollywood! If they want to stick to Tudor, how about they find something on Mary I or Edward VI (Bess' half siblings). I don't want to see another Henry VIII movie either. He did more than just have 6 wives, darn it!
The series itself was fine. Some of the historical things got screwed up but I try to ignore that. I'm a huge Tudor buff, so yes some of the sketchy things bugged me, but not enough to make me rant about it.
Summary: Put the Tudors to rest Please!
V for Vendetta (2005)
Political Satire
When I go to a movie, it's either to make fun of it or because I really have nothing else to do on Friday nights. Last night, I saw 'V For Vendetta' and I blown away. I didn't go to make fun of it of course, but I was just floored.
The political satire was wonderful. Using Muslims and homosexuals as scapegoats for the things wrong with society and lying about searching for weapons so as to torture citizens in unknown prisons are parallels to today's America, even though the movie took place in the future in England. :) I was amused that the USA had been through a Civil War and was now a Leper Colony. That's a WONDERFUL future for the Americans, wouldn't you say? (I'm being sarcastic of course) I didn't care for some of the slow motion knife twirling, but even that was overpowered by V actually slicing someone. The great thing about this film is that it's almost unbelievable and ridiculous to a point, but because V represents all the people (as Natalie Portman's character states in the film) you feel sucked in and you love V as a hero, you want him to represent you.
I also like how they did have some humor in the film. When Evey wakes up and goes into the kitchen, V is in a frilly apron making her breakfast. When he introduces himself to her in the street, his diction is made up mostly of words that have the lette v or begin with the letter v. He said it all so quickly and it was just amusing.
I suggest this movie for anyone who is in the mood for some Bush-bashing, impressive action sequences, and damn good music.
Clue (1985)
Classic
'Clue' is probably one of the better comedies I've seen in a long time. Every character in the movie is brought alive by the actor playing him/her and it's just so entertaining. We did it as a stage play last winter and I was Professor Plum, so this movie has good and sentimental memories and thoughts for me. It also makes me laugh my ass off. :)
Every single person I know who has seen 'Clue' loves it! I think it's got something to do with the fact that Tim Curry has all those quick lines at the end and how perverted Plum is throughout with all the women, including Mrs. Peacock at one point! This is one of the best films I have ever seen. Great fun and great laughs. You could quote this movie FOREVER!!
