First of all, I am a big fan, but not a die-hard one of Star Wars. I don't have big problems with the prequel triology as the Phantom Menace was the first movie that I watched as a 6-year-old boy and it made me interested in the whole Star Wars world. So my assumption is different from those who think that the only good Star Wars is the original triology.
Considering the circumstances including Carrie Fisher's sudden passing and the negativity that surrounded The Last Jedi I wasn't sure that the new triology can end in great way. It wasn't the great way that it could've been with Leia accomplishing her potential but that wasn't the production's fault. The Rise of Skywalker was a satisfying end, most probably the best within 142 minutes to this time line.
This movie declared the mission to somehow summarize the 8 movies and put an end to the whole story. This way it had to sideline some characters and ideas from TLJ, but I don't feel that everything landed in trash. I would say that it kept the good from it, including the complex attachment of Rey and Kylo Ren, and sidelined the less interesting parts (at least for me) like the Rose-Finn line.
The idea that Palpatine is still behind all that is evil is valid and a good explanation why Snoke could have been killed so easily. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver give a great performance, they drive the whole story. Leia has a respectful ending, her efforts have a reason however we can't be really sad as the story doesn't let us. Maybe that's the most problematic part, that the plot is running so rapidly that sometimes it's not possible to get really involved and emphatise with the characters. But final was strong enough not to feel confused at the end.
It wasn't fantastic because it was simply not possible. But it was great, sometimes stunning and gave a decent end to the main characters.
