Black Crab (2022)
Incredible; a depiction of situations beyond imagining
23 March 2022
I thought this movie was an incredible depiction of the realities of urban warfare-real eye-opener. If you have any interest in understanding or appreciating the horror of modern urban warfare, such as what is occurring in Ukraine right now, you should watch this movie. Certain details differ greatly from the Ukrainian situation (obviously), but that doesn't detract greatly.

Ignore the critics, and ignore the poor reviews: the value from the movie is in understanding what it's actually like for those in the teeth of an enemy invasion. It does so with authenticity and heart.

I cannot recommend this movie highly enough, given the current geopolitical realities of our time.

Deeply problematic, but for reasons unmentioned by others
10 August 2021
I watched this movie twice, enjoying it the first time.

The second time I found it sickening. The problem with it is this: it trivializes extreme violence and violent death in a way that cannot be good for viewers or society at large.

Extreme close-ups of partially or fully dismembered people shown to the tune of an "ironic" upbeat soundtrack is sickening.

Large numbers of civilians gruesomely killed in scenes death and torture are likewise sickening.

I know this cannot be healthy to watch, regardless of the viewer's age. Intended irony on the part of the director cannot mitigate this issue.

For some, this may be the best movie of the year.
3 July 2021
I consider this movie to be one of my favourite blockbusters ever.

The movie has a timely and important message about our responsibility to our children and grandchildren to keep the world safe and habitable, and the necessity of making some sacrifices to do so.

I have watched the film three times in as many days, and I think that most concerns about the film are overdone. I do not consider there to be distracting plot holes and I do not think that the movie is overlong. I also do not consider it to be merely a re-creation of the 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow.

The special effects are competently done, and it is obvious that the screen writers paid special attention to what was written. The movie takes itself seriously, but there is some well-timed and well needed comic relief.

It's not a book by Tolstoy, and it's not intended to be. It's primarily exists as a means to entertain. But it does so with aplomb.

For me, it's a solid 10. Try it! You may love it as I do.

Snowpiercer (2020–2024)
An excellent and affecting show with an important message for our time
15 April 2021
Snowpiercer is modern modern take on an issue that is under-examined in our time: inequality, injustice, and the lies that people are told (often by themselves) that allow such injustices to take root.

It is not realistic, but so what? To say it is "unrealistic" is to entirely miss the point of the show.

It should be mandatory viewing for all people who want to make the world better. One must first recognize the enemy in order to fight it.

Just reprehensible.

This host is unbelievably self-promoting and unethical. He hasn't practised for years and his behaviour has resulted in many participants on his show being abused in sick ways.
