The Godfather (1972)
Must See
Why haven't I seen one of the most popular movies of all time? Well I finally did and it didn't disappoint. Despite the length of the movie, I was thoroughly engaged throughout. When a movie has you routing for the bad guys, it demonstrates the impact of an excellent story well executed. The film is so much more than just a gangster movie. It addresses politics, family values, crime and the social norms of the time. I know that I will watch this many more times as well as the Godfather films which follow. Fast paced, excellent acting, great music all combine to make this a must see.
Baby Face (1933)
Powers becomes empowered
A racey film for this time period. Baby Face is a good example of how women were treated very differently than men in the workplace. How many times have we heard she slept her way up the ladder to get what she has? Rather than continuing to be used by men, Baby Face ruthlessly turns the tables. Despite being quite linear, this film moves quickly and is entertaining.
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
Feel Good Movie
Keaton knows how to keep an audience engaged. He effectively incorporates comedy, romance and crime fighting into this film. Using a movie within a movie is an ingenious way to enhance the confidence of the character while solving the crime and winning the girl. The music worked well in maintaining the momentum of the film.
The General (1926)
Action packed
I have seen very few silent pictures, however was quite impressed by the amount of action packed into this film. If not paying close attention to the scenes, a lot can be lost. Anyone who loves trains, as I do, will thoroughly enjoy all the antics on the locomotive. It is a very entertaining film however it seemed a bit too long.
