The Sopranos paved the way for all the modern tv series (at least for the greats) and quality long-term storytelling. And I still think it's nods,nuances and the episode/season structure hasn't been topped yet although its probably done just as good in Mad Men and like. In its visual cues and clues Sopranos created something that will continue to influence every other writer/director who wants to do good on television, it will surely endure many years to come. I can't think of a more versatile work more intertextual in its meaning and logos/kosmos. Episodes consist of deeply thoughtful, philosophical/ontological questions but also very entertaining material like shooting a waiter just because he's annoying, a big step up for the dark comedy of Tarantino/Coens, because you actually get to know and feel the characters and be in their heads. But more importantly, the ethos of italian-american culture is all there, point by point, how they live,breathe,kill and even die.powerful. Lastly, I should note that Breaking Bad is probably more carefully crafted and burr-free in many points than the Sopranos. It should not be considered a long-form television series but an epic 46 episodes long film, Breaking Bad creates some form thats just more than a great television series, it does not use the formula(which mad men,boardwalk etc uses),but breaks itself from it, so I can't really count Breaking Bad in the same category but there it is. Sopranos is the forefather of modern television.
