My Favorite TV Shows

When it comes to TV, I generally prefer comedies to dramas. I think the medium of TV lends itself to comedy in a unique way, and great things have been done with TV comedies, especially in the last ten years.

1. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988–1999)

TV-14 | 90 min | Comedy, Sci-Fi

In the not-too-distant future Joel Robinson is held captive by Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank, forced to watch B-Grade movies on the Satellite of Love with the help of his robot friends: Cambot, Gypsy, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot.

Stars: Joel Hodgson, Michael J. Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy

Votes: 25,853

This is the grandfather of all the alternative-structure sitcoms of the past decade. An endless stream of double entendres, clever puns, long-running inside jokes and pop culture references comes at you so fast you'll miss half of them the first listen. In fact, you can watch each episode ten times and still pick up something new.

2. Twin Peaks (1990–1991)

TV-MA | 50 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

An idiosyncratic FBI agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks.

Stars: Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook

Votes: 215,358

This series made me appreciate David Lynch. Every episode is a surreal mix of mystery and hilarity, unlike any dramatic series you've ever seen. Some of the most emotive and memorable scenes I've ever seen on the small or big screen occur in this fascinating show.

3. Seinfeld (1989–1998)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

The continuing misadventures of neurotic New York City stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his equally neurotic New York City friends.

Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander

Votes: 351,364

The zenith of the traditional sitcom. No other TV show has had as profound a mark on TV or pop culture in general. One of the best casts in any sticom combined with a writing corps adept at mixing disparate stories together made for consistent laughs all nine seasons.

4. Arrested Development (2003–2019)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy

Level-headed son Michael Bluth takes over family affairs after his father is imprisoned. But the rest of his spoiled, dysfunctional family are making his job unbearable.

Stars: Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett

Votes: 324,145

The single most influential sitcom of the last ten years. It has a stellar core cast, and more star-studded cameos than any TV show I know of. It's loaded with word play, double entendres, and long-running jokes that change subtly over the course of the series.

5. American Dad! (2005– )

TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Comedy

The escapades of Stan Smith, a conservative C.I.A. Agent dealing with family life, and keeping America safe.

Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Wendy Schaal, Scott Grimes, Rachael MacFarlane

Votes: 136,238

As good as Family Guy in its peak years, and, unlike Family Guy, it's still funny.

6. Dexter (2006–2013)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

He's smart. He's lovable. He's Dexter Morgan, America's favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and nights committing them.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

Votes: 765,790

A lot more dramatic than my other choices, but Dexter has such a dry sense of humor and such a detached view of humanity that it's often darkly funny. Really sharp writing.

7. Parks and Recreation (2009–2015)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy

The absurd antics of an Indiana town's public officials as they pursue sundry projects to make their city a better place.

Stars: Amy Poehler, Jim O'Heir, Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt

Votes: 287,922

What The Office wishes it was. More likable characters, better writing, less claustrophobia.

8. Community (2009–2015)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy

A suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eccentric staff and student body.

Stars: Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase

Votes: 293,409

The natural successor to Arrested Development with a little bit of The Office thrown in, Community is more creative and edgy than any of its counterparts.

9. Party Down (2009– )

TV-14 | 30 min | Comedy, Drama

A group of actors move to Los Angeles to make it big, but end up working as caterers.

Stars: Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr

Votes: 37,138

Hilarious. The raunchy offspring of Arrested Development.

10. Archer (2009–2023)

TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

Covert black ops and espionage take a back seat to zany personalities and relationships between secret agents and drones.

Stars: H. Jon Benjamin, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Chris Parnell

Votes: 165,892

The ultimate animated comedy. It's like Arrested Development + Party Down + The Simpsons. Edgy, smart, and surprisingly subtle.

11. Perfect Couples (2010–2011)

TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy, Romance

Three couples have different ideas of what makes the perfect relationship.

Stars: Kyle Bornheimer, Christine Woods, David Walton, Mary Elizabeth Ellis

Votes: 2,572

It was critically maligned, and so unpopular that it only lasted six episodes. But I enjoyed the time that Perfect Couples was on the air. Each character started as a standard carciature, but each episode showed a new, unusual quirk that made each one that much more interesting. I like how the creators structured the show, too.
