This one ran into trouble because actual states with chain gangs were outraged about how they were portrayed. The ending of the movie is a classic.

A nosy reporter is set up for a crime and sent to jail. Here you have an example of a well done picture about life inside the prison. You also have one of the best earlier portrayals of a tough and cruel police guard.
