1. Trouble Every Day (2001)

Not Rated | 101 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

40 Metascore

Two American newlyweds in Paris experience a love so strong, it almost devours them.

Director: Claire Denis | Stars: Vincent Gallo, Tricia Vessey, Béatrice Dalle, Alex Descas

Votes: 9,309 | Gross: $0.01M

i'm starting off with this claire denis' gem, a truly captivating and haunting movie which is, sadly, pretty much missunderstood.

2. Friday Night (2002)

Unrated | 90 min | Drama, Romance

69 Metascore

It's Friday night--she's moving in with her boyfriend tomorrow--so she goes out, but gets stuck in traffic--where she meets a handsome stranger.

Director: Claire Denis | Stars: Valérie Lemercier, Vincent Lindon, Hélène de Saint-Père, Hélène Fillières

Votes: 2,140 | Gross: $0.16M

another denis' masterpiece. one night stand has never been potrayed in such an delicate, yet highly erotically charged way. words are unnecessary.

3. Cruising (1980)

R | 102 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

43 Metascore

A police officer goes undercover in the underground S&M gay subculture of New York City to catch a serial killer who is preying on gay men.

Director: William Friedkin | Stars: Al Pacino, Paul Sorvino, Karen Allen, Richard Cox

Votes: 28,066 | Gross: $19.80M

for many, this was one of the friedkin's flops. but, if you're looking for one of the finest pacino performances, a grim, unsettling atmosphere, or in a nutshell, a movie you couldn't shake off easily, this one's for you.

4. Bug (2006)

R | 102 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

62 Metascore

An unhinged war veteran holes up with a lonely woman in a spooky Oklahoma motel room. The line between reality and delusion is blurred as they discover a bug infestation.

Director: William Friedkin | Stars: Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon, Harry Connick Jr., Lynn Collins

Votes: 37,825 | Gross: $7.01M

friedkin also didn't get the recognition he deserved for this highly claustrophobic, intense tale of paranoia. judd and shannon (especially shannon) at their best.

5. Dahmer (2002)

R | 101 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

63 Metascore

Biopic about notorious American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, taking place in both the past and the present.

Director: David Jacobson | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Bruce Davison, Artel Great, Matt Newton

Votes: 11,668 | Gross: $0.14M

an interesting take on a serial killer. if you're looking for renner's best performance (eventhough he did a tremendous job in "the hurt locker") so far, look no further.

6. Roger Dodger (2002)

R | 106 min | Comedy, Drama

75 Metascore

After breaking up with his lover and boss, a smooth-talking man takes his teenaged nephew out on the town in search of sex.

Director: Dylan Kidd | Stars: Campbell Scott, Jesse Eisenberg, Isabella Rossellini, Elizabeth Berkley

Votes: 17,924 | Gross: $1.27M

frightfully honest take on relationships and sexual dynamics between the sexes. oh, but it's also one of the wittiest, best written movies as i can recall.

7. Session 9 (2001)

R | 97 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

58 Metascore

Tensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.

Director: Brad Anderson | Stars: David Caruso, Stephen Gevedon, Paul Guilfoyle, Josh Lucas

Votes: 62,922 | Gross: $0.38M

you'll find no gore here, nor cheap horror tricks. this one goes gradually under your skin. brad anderson may be famous for his "the machinist", but this chilling tale is far superior.

8. Six Degrees of Separation (1993)

R | 112 min | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

72 Metascore

An affluent New York City couple finds their lives touched, intruded upon, and compelled by a mysterious young black man who is never quite who he says he is.

Director: Fred Schepisi | Stars: Will Smith, Stockard Channing, Donald Sutherland, Ian McKellen

Votes: 22,575 | Gross: $6.41M

fascinating, intelligent and highly enjoyable movie based on a premise that everyone is connected to everyone only by six people. and so much more. never been quite fond of will smith, but he's superb in this one, never overshadowed by the greats such as stockard channing and donald sutherland.

9. Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)

GP | 89 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

58 Metascore

A recently institutionalized woman has bizarre experiences after moving into a supposedly haunted country farmhouse and fears she may be losing her sanity once again.

Director: John D. Hancock | Stars: Zohra Lampert, Barton Heyman, Kevin O'Connor, Gretchen Corbett

Votes: 9,313

one of the eeriest horrors out there. creepines and uneasiness are right there from the very beginning, due to fantastic soundtrack, brilliant zohra lampert and that hancock's special touch.

10. In My Skin (2002)

Unrated | 93 min | Drama, Horror

68 Metascore

A woman grows increasingly fascinated with her body after suffering a disfiguring accident.

Director: Marina de Van | Stars: Marina de Van, Laurent Lucas, Léa Drucker, Thibault de Montalembert

Votes: 5,729 | Gross: $0.03M

yes, this one's quite disturbing and not everyone's cup of tea. but marina de van's intimate, thought-provoking and devastating tale of ultimate liberation through self mutilation is truly a must see.

11. Two Lovers (2008)

R | 110 min | Drama, Romance

74 Metascore

A Brooklyn-set romantic drama about a bachelor torn between the family friend his parents wish he would marry and his beautiful but volatile new neighbor.

Director: James Gray | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vinessa Shaw, Anne Joyce

Votes: 43,552 | Gross: $3.15M

incredibly sad and moving, with overall great performances (especially joaquin phenix), and gray's fantastic directing, it just blew me away how this one just went under the radar. one of the finest dramas in the last couple of years.

12. Martin (1977)

R | 95 min | Drama, Horror

68 Metascore

A young man, who believes himself to be a vampire, goes to live with his elderly and hostile cousin in a Pennsylvania small town where he tries to redeem his blood-craving urges.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: John Amplas, Lincoln Maazel, Christine Forrest, Elyane Nadeau

Votes: 12,608 | Gross: $0.10M

romero gained his fame and recognition as one the masters of the horror genre with his zombie classics (masterpieces, without a doubt), but this little known gem of his is the one you should check out as well. moving untraditional vampire tale of a young, lonely teenager who doesn't quite fit in.
