20 Best Actors to portray Comic Book to Movie Heroes + Villians

by mkaye86 | created - 23 May 2012 | updated - 24 May 2012 | Public

This is my list of the 20 best actors that have portrayed comic book to movie heroes. I leave this to be so generic so i can include Dark Horse, DC, Marvel, etc.

1. Heath Ledger

Actor | Brokeback Mountain

When hunky, twenty-year-old heart-throb Heath Ledger first came to the attention of the public in 1999, it was all too easy to tag him as a "pretty boy" and an actor of little depth. He spent several years trying desperately to sway this image, but this was a double-edged sword. His work comprised ...

You have may guessed this from my comments that i mention in Hiddleston's placement comment. The role of the Joker was totally his own, surpassing all of the other Jokers ever to take the spot. Now if you think of Joker, you will think Ledger. Not Nicholson, and definitely not Hamill, nor the others, or even the original played by Cesar Romero in the 1966 Adam West TV Show. Roles that are iconic and legendary are in a league of their own. If i were to take that previous sentence and create another list, Ledger would probably grab 1 2 or 3. The mind of Ledger is a mysterious one. And i thought seeing Dr. Parnassus was just to say goodbye and my respects to an incredible actor

2. Hugh Jackman

Actor | Les Misérables

Hugh Michael Jackman is an Australian actor, singer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer and producer. Jackman has won international recognition for his roles in major films, notably as superhero, period, and romance characters. He is best known for his long-running role as Wolverine in the X-Men film ...

Jackman has picked up the medal blades 5 times (x1,2,3, origins, and the cameo in first class). Number six is the sequel to Origins: Wolverine, called The Wolverine where he travels to another country. Giving him the number two spot is really tough, mainly because out of everyone on this list, Jackman is not tired of playing the same role more than once. I hope that the character is retired sooner than later, giving Jackman more to move on to

3. Ian McKellen

Actor | The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Widely regarded as one of greatest stage and screen actors both in his native Great Britain and internationally, twice nominated for the Oscar and recipient of every major theatrical award in the UK and US, Ian Murray McKellen was born on May 25, 1939 in Burnley, Lancashire, England, to Margery ...

Sir Ian McKellen has done some amazing roles in his life, but none more sinister than baddie Eric Lensherr/Magneto. His Role as the vicious Magneto was more than excelling, it was a suspenseful joy ride. I choose my wording here to be different than my earlier entry with Edward Norton. McKellen did one hell of an amazing job playing another big baddie in the Marvel Unverse, which puts him over Tom Hiddleston.

4. Stephen Amell

Actor | Arrow

Stephen Amell is a Canadian actor, known for portraying Oliver Queen / Green Arrow in the Arrowverse television franchise (based on the comic character of the same name) and Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016).

Stephen Adam Amell was born on May 8, 1981 in Toronto,...

I have newcomer Stephen Amell in the number 4 spot for one reason: He is the new guy to watch to take over the Role of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow from Justin Hartley in the new CW show ARROW. Hartley did a great job as the GA in smallville, but its clear that this new series is more done in a style similar to Chris Nolan's Batman. I can't wait to see him and how the role will become his and how differently the new GA is portrayed

5. Cobie Smulders

Actress | The Avengers

Cobie Smulders was born on April 3, 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia, to a Dutch father and an English mother. As a girl, Cobie had set her sights on becoming a doctor or a marine biologist. In fact, it wasn't until high school that Cobie started to explore acting after appearing in several ...

Cobie Smulders, starts the Top 5 countdown, is more known as the role of Robin Scherbatsky in the TV show How I Met Your Mother. Smulders beat out Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for the part of Maria Hill. IMO, she was the most underrated actor of the entire Avengers movie. She wasn't given enough air time. So why give her the number 6 spot? Sexy newcomer Cobie Smulders never gave much thought to acting. But she excels at it without trying very hard

6. Scarlett Johansson

Actress | Lost in Translation

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born on November 22, 1984 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. Her mother, Melanie Sloan is from a Jewish family from the Bronx and her father, Karsten Johansson is a Danish-born architect from Copenhagen. She has a sister, Vanessa Johansson, who is also an actress, ...

I might be sexist and a little judgmental here, but Johansson's role as Black Widow was Extraordinary! So why put her in the top ten, but not the top 5? That's easy, She wanted the role so badly so she dyed her hair red. I'm sorry my dear, everyone does something like that for a role every once in a while. Another list that i have is top 10 Sexiest Women. Johannsen is number 1 on that list, but number two is Natalie Portman. Shaving her hair off in V, was a bold and controversial thing to do. Getting back on topic, My number one hottie gets top ten material on this list.

7. Tom Welling

Actor | Smallville

Tom Welling is probably best known for playing Clark Kent on the hit television series Smallville (2001).

He was born Thomas Joseph Welling in Putnam Valley, New York, to Bonnie and Thomas Welling, who is a retired executive for General Motors. He has a younger brother, Mark Welling, who is also an ...

Welling did one hell of an excellent job as Clark Kent/Superman. He deserves a top ten spot mainly because he has played more than one role on the show. He had also played Superman's exact opposite, Ultra Man, and Bizarro. Welling proves that he can be more than just a hero, but a good villian as well. In one season 4 episode, he even takes to the footsteps of Lionel Luthor. Another reason why he gets slot 7 is that he turned down the role twice before accepting it. Welling thought the role was too big for him, but the show was a success, turning his name into a household name.

8. Tom Hiddleston

Actor | The Avengers

Thomas William Hiddleston was born in Westminster, London, to English-born Diana Patricia (Servaes) and Scottish-born James Norman Hiddleston. His mother is a former stage manager, and his father, a scientist, was the managing director of a pharmaceutical company. He started off at the preparatory ...

For the big baddie villian in Avengers, why give him number 8? Easily, comparing him to Heath Ledger, Ledger out ranks him in this top ten. Both great villians, even in comparison. But what gives ledger that top 5 spot is that he puts his heart and soul into the role. Hiddleston looked like he enjoyed the movie, but i noticed that his head wasn't fully into the game. I don't think he enjoyed getting knocked around by the Hulk, heck i don't think anyone would. Then again, his role as Loki was similar to Hitler, they even mention that in the movie. The main difference between Hiddleston and Ledger, Ledger's role was all his own versus Hiddleston where his role was noticable and done before

9. Laura Vandervoort

Actress | The Handmaid's Tale

Born in Toronto, Canada, Laura Vandervoort is a versatile actress who not only crosses over genres, but also transforms from character to character embracing the essence of every role she plays. Best known for her roles on the television shows "Smallville" as Supergirl, and "V," Laura has built an ...

Vandervoort's performance as Kara Kent/Linda Danvers in Smallville, i'd have to say is one of the best performances i've ever seen. I loved the episode where Helen Slater appears as Lara El along with Kara El in the Kent Barn. To me this is as iconic of the passing of the Super Girl role, as when Christopher Reeve's appeared on the show, passing the role of Clark Kent/Superman to Tom Welling. Vandervoort's sexy body has been seen in Smallville as well. Putting her at 9, shows you can be sexy, smart, independent, and still can pull out an excellent performance

10. Edward Norton

Actor | Fight Club

American actor, filmmaker and activist Edward Harrison Norton was born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was raised in Columbia, Maryland.

His mother, Lydia Robinson "Robin" (Rouse), was a foundation executive and teacher of English, and a daughter of famed real estate developer ...

Out of all of the actors that have played the hulk, my favorite will always be Norton. At number ten, he proves that you can be on the run and still be a hero. Bana's Hulk doesn't even rank on my list (in the 300s at least). And Ruffalo did a good job (i'd say in the 100s), But Norton makes it at 10 because, his movies and roles always put me feeling like a roller coaster of suspense.

11. Patrick Stewart

Actor | Logan

Sir Patrick Stewart was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, to Gladys (Barrowclough), a textile worker and weaver, and Alfred Stewart, who was in the army. He was a member of various local drama groups from about age 12. He left school at age 15 to work as a junior reporter on a local paper; he ...

Heading into the Top 10, and placing Stewart at number 11. What am i thinking? Out of all the roles Stewart has played, Professor X still is the most memorable role he has ever played. So why would i place him at 11? He might've done an amazing job, especially playing opposite Ian McKellen in the x-men movies. But this is a toss up, because this role was phenomenally done, because the role wasn't really original. I noticed some similarities to his Star Trek Role

12. Tim Roth

Actor | Rob Roy

Often mistaken for an American because of his skill at imitating accents, actor Tim Roth was born Timothy Simon Roth on May 14, 1961 in Lambeth, London, England. His mother, Ann, was a teacher and landscape painter. His father, Ernie, was a journalist who had changed the family name from "Smith" to ...

I said that this list is to include some baddies too. Roth's performance as Abomination in Norton's Incredible Hulk 2008 movie. I want to say first and foremost that this movie was better than the Bana Hulk 2003 movie. That movie was all over the place. Roth takes 12 because of the amazing job he played in the movie. He started out just a regular soldier wanting the power and more to destroy the hulk.

13. Chris Evans

Actor | The Avengers

Christopher Robert Evans is an American actor, film producer, and director. Evans began his acting career in typical fashion: performing in school productions and community theatre.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Lisa (Capuano), who worked at the Concord Youth Theatre, and G. ...

I just need to say that the slot of 13 goes to Evans, not for his role as Rogers/Cap America, but for the role of Johnny Storm in the F4 movies. I know that this might be stretching it a bit, but here me out. First of all, Alba and Evans said no to making F4 3, but thats not this reason. I loved him as Jonny Storm, being so that this role is more difficult than the thing. Having the powers of the sun is more dangerous than being transformed into a walking rock. Evans has yet to make a movie that i dislike. All of his roles are enjoyable.

14. Will Smith

Producer | The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Willard Carroll "Will" Smith II (born September 25, 1968) is an American actor, comedian, producer, rapper, and songwriter. He has enjoyed success in television, film, and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him "the most powerful actor in Hollywood". Smith has been nominated for five Golden ...

Slots 10 to 14 are going to be a little more difficult for me to chose, as oppose to even harder it'll get to for slots 6-9, and then extremely difficult for slots 1-5. Men In Black was a comic long before the movies. Originally by Aircell Comics, which got bought out to Malibu Comics, then sold to Marvell Comics. Smith Starts the difficult choices at 14, because he has excelled at singing, acting, modeling, and more. Smith was the first actor to have successfully tried other avenues and excelled at them. I look forward to seeing Agent J one more time in MIB 3.

15. Ben Stiller

Producer | Tropic Thunder

Benjamin Edward Meara Stiller was born on November 30, 1965, in New York City, New York, to legendary comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. His father was of Austrian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent, and his mother was of Irish Catholic descent (she converted to Judaism).

His parents made no real...

Some people might have forgotten Stillers Role as Mr. Furious in the 1999 Dark Horse Comic turned movie, Mystery Men. He is the perfect candidate for slot 15 of my list, mainly because he did a good job. But yet the movie was weak in certain elements. At number 15, Stiller starts the countdown to the actors that excelled at their roles

16. Jim Carrey

Actor | Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Jim Carrey, Canadian-born and a U.S. citizen since 2004, is an actor and producer famous for his rubbery body movements and flexible facial expressions. The two-time Golden Globe-winner rose to fame as a cast member of the Fox sketch comedy In Living Color (1990) but leading roles in Ace Ventura: ...

So this one might cause some controversy, depending on whose looking at this list. The number 16 spot goes to Jim Carrey, not for his role as riddler, but for the role of the Mask. Yes The Mask, the comedic 1994 role was a dark horse comic before the movie. Although his role is not top 15 material, he still deserves a spot on this list

17. Jackie Earle Haley

Actor | Little Children

Jackie Earle Haley is an American actor who started his career with The Bad News Bears. He had more adult roles in Little Children, the cult classic Zack Snyder film Watchmen, Alita: Battle Angel, and Freddy Krueger from a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. He has been married three times and has...

Ok, i loved him as Rorschach in Watchmen, but i don't think he deserves a spot in the top 15 of this list, i thought 17 was reasonable for my reasons. Don't get me wrong he did a good job, but the movie itself also had some similarities to other comic heroes (night owl II to batman) that gave me another reason to not have him in the top 15.

18. Justin Hartley

Actor | This Is Us

Justin Hartley can currently be seen starring on NBC's critically acclaimed, award winning series, "This Is Us," alongside Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown and Chrissy Metz. Created by Dan Fogelman, "This Is Us" premiered in September 2016 and instantly broke ratings records, ...

Ok, i know what some people might think for me putting hartley at 18. But here me out, This is not for the role of Green Arrow, but for the role as Aqua Man. Yes i admit after watching the pilot i had mixed reviews, but i wanted to see more of hartley in this role mainly because i think he did a good job

19. Ben Affleck

Producer | Argo

Benjamin Géza "Ben" Affleck-Boldt was born on August 15, 1972 in Berkeley, California and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to mother Chris Anne (Boldt), a school teacher, and father Timothy Byers "Tim" Affleck, a social worker. Ben has a younger brother, actor Casey Affleck, who was born in 1975...

i liked him as daredevil. The movie itself was a disaster for one reason. Too many characters and the need to introduce them.

20. Ron Perlman

Actor | Hand of God

Ron Perlman is a classically-trained actor who has appeared in countless stage plays, feature films and television productions.

Ronald N. Perlman was born April 13, 1950 in Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York. His mother, Dorothy (Rosen), is retired from the City Clerk's Office. His father, ...

at number 20 - he did a good job, i'll give him that, but i think the movies could have been done a little better
