1. The Nativity Story (2006)

PG | 101 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

52 Metascore

A drama that focuses on the period in Mary and Joseph's life where they journeyed to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus.

Director: Catherine Hardwicke | Stars: Keisha Castle-Hughes, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Oscar Isaac, Hiam Abbass

Votes: 12,357 | Gross: $37.63M

Beautiful film about the true Christmas Story, handsomely cast and filmed with a solid Middle Eastern/Jewish flavor, and the best Three Wise Men I've ever seen. The incidental music incorporates well-known Christmas Carols throughout. A must-see movie for everyone.

2. A Christmas Carol (2009)

PG | 96 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

55 Metascore

An animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Steve Valentine

Votes: 129,542 | Gross: $137.86M

Without a doubt, one of the most magnificent tellings of the beloved Dickens classic. Jim Carrey carries the show as Scrooge, Marley, and all three Christmas Spirits, but the real kudos go to the character of Bob Crachit as voiced by Gary Oldman. He's the definative Crachitt in my opinion. The film is a feast for the eye, the ear and the imagination, bring to sharp relief many of the points Dickens made in his story. A sublime joy with a lot of humor thrown in for effect.

3. The Snowman (1982 TV Movie)

G | 26 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

On Christmas Eve, a young boy builds a snowman that comes to life and takes him to the North Pole to meet Father Christmas.

Directors: Jimmy T. Murakami, Dianne Jackson | Stars: David Bowie, Raymond Briggs, Mel Smith

Votes: 16,842

The animated version of the famous children's story is depicted with a dreamlike beauty and wonderous good humor that has made it a great favorite of mine for many years.

4. A Christmas Carol (1951)

TV-PG | 86 min | Drama, Family, Fantasy

Ebenezer Scrooge, a curmudgeonly, miserly businessman, has no time for sentimentality and largely views Christmas as a waste of time. However, this Christmas Eve, he will be visited by three spirits who will show him the error of his ways.

Director: Brian Desmond Hurst | Stars: Alastair Sim, Jack Warner, Kathleen Harrison, Mervyn Johns

Votes: 25,727

Alistair Cooke is everybody's idea of what Ebeneezer Scrooge looks like. A thought-provoking on the rise of the Industrial Revolution, which made Scrooge and Marley into the corporate pirates they became, it explores Scrooge's past, present and future in greater depth than even Dickens did, and we soon come to see the cynical Scrooge as just a lonely, bitter, haunted old man who is angry with himself more than anyone. This very popular film tweaks the original story a little to add its own speculations, and many of them have since appeared in numerous other versions.

5. The Polar Express (2004)

G | 100 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

61 Metascore

On Christmas Eve, a young boy embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express, while learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Tom Hanks, Chris Coppola, Michael Jeter, Leslie Zemeckis

Votes: 241,357 | Gross: $183.37M

One of the most amazing and magical Christmas movies of all time! It is about a boy who has reached the age of doubt concerning Santa Claus, only to find he has a ticket to ride a mysterious train all the way to the North Pole. Very entertaining.

6. The Santa Clause (1994)

PG | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

57 Metascore

When a man inadvertently makes Santa fall off his roof on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place.

Director: John Pasquin | Stars: Tim Allen, Judge Reinhold, Wendy Crewson, Eric Lloyd

Votes: 133,431 | Gross: $144.83M

I am actually listing not only the Santa Clause, but to save space I am also including the second and third movies in this wonderful trilogy. Let's face it, Tim Allen really IS Santa Claus, and you too will be convinced by the time it is all over. The second and third films are not quite as good as the first, but they all form a delightful whole that is hard to resist. And yes, the age-old question is finally answered about how does Santa get into all those houses that don't have chimneys. Brilliant!

7. A Christmas Carol (1999 TV Movie)

TV-PG | 95 min | Drama, Fantasy

An old bitter miser who makes excuses for his uncaring nature learns real compassion when three ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve.

Director: David Hugh Jones | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Joel Grey, Ian McNeice

Votes: 10,922

Patrick Stewart plays Scrooge in a thought-provoking way as a lonely cynic who learns to find joy in his life once again, especially concerning Christmas. Beautifully filmed, beautifully acted.

8. A Christmas Carol (1984 TV Movie)

PG | 100 min | Drama, Family, Fantasy

A bitter old miser who rationalizes his uncaring nature learns real compassion when three spirits visit him on Christmas Eve.

Director: Clive Donner | Stars: George C. Scott, Frank Finlay, Angela Pleasence, Edward Woodward

Votes: 18,345

George C. Scott makes a wonderfully crusty old Scrooge in this fine British production where he is the only American actor. It borrows a lot from the Alastair Sim classic, and has a great supporting cast as well as a wonderful musical score.

9. A Christmas Story (1983)

PG | 93 min | Comedy, Family

77 Metascore

In the 1940s, a young boy named Ralphie Parker attempts to convince his parents, teacher, and Santa Claus that a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun really is the perfect Christmas gift.

Director: Bob Clark | Stars: Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, Scott Schwartz

Votes: 168,630 | Gross: $20.61M

Probably the most popular Christmas movie of all time, almost everyone knows Ralphie Parker, his brother Randy, his parents, his buddies Flick & Schwartz, and a dozen amazingly funny and familiar scenes involving an ugly lamp, a school theme, a frozen pole, a couple of bullies, and the unlikely "chinese turkey". Extremely satisfying story.

10. Scrooged (1988)

PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

38 Metascore

A selfish, cynical television executive is haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve.

Director: Richard Donner | Stars: Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover

Votes: 116,443 | Gross: $60.33M

A man jaded by years of career climbing, he is no longer the kind man he once was, but a bitter cynic who cares for no one. Bill Murray is a perfect actor to play the Scrooge character because he is so adept at playing unpleasant, self-centered little man who turns out to be a pretty nice guy after all. It also shows the power the media might have of spreading love and goodness instead of cynicism. Nice movie.

11. Biography (1987– )

Votes: 122

This delightful "biography" is all about how St.Nicholas developed over the centuries into the much-loved gift bringer known around the world. You'll learn some interesting little tidbits.

12. A Child's Christmas in Wales (1987 TV Movie)

Not Rated | 55 min | Drama, Family

Young Thomas is disappointed because it?s raining on Christmas Eve. But his spirits are soon lifted by his grandfather, who gives him a snow globe and recounts his own childhood Christmas memories.

Director: Don McBrearty | Stars: Denholm Elliott, Mathonwy Reeves, Glynis Davies, Michael Fawkes

Votes: 657

Based on the poem by Dylan Thomas, this is the account of an early 20th century boy and one glorious Christmas when he was surrounded by friends, family, and a holiday to remember. Lovely period film.

13. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: The Next Doctor (2008)

Votes: 5,649

The Doctor lands in Dickensian London in the midst of a perfect Christmas season. However, he meets a gentleman whom he thinks at first might be his future self. A fun story

14. Doctor Who (2005–2022)
Episode: A Christmas Carol (2010)

TV-PG | 62 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Festive edition of the time-travelling drama. The Doctor has one hour to save a crashing spaceship and a miser's soul - but what lurks in the fog?

Director: Toby Haynes | Stars: Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Michael Gambon

Votes: 8,481

It was inevitable with its themes of Past, Present and Future that the Doctor would find himself in a Charles Dickens story. This, of course, has its own twists and turns, taking place on a distant planet, and the Scrooge character played by Michael Gambon. You'll almost believe that the Doctor is Santa Claus.

15. Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

PG | 95 min | Comedy, Family, Fantasy

44 Metascore

Ernest helps Santa Claus as he searches for his successor.

Director: John R. Cherry III | Stars: Jim Varney, Douglas Seale, Oliver Clark, Noelle Parker

Votes: 12,862 | Gross: $28.20M

The only Jim Varney movie I've ever enjoyed. In this one, Ernest is a Florida cab driver who unknowingly picks up Santa Claus at the airport, and the adventure begins. An underrated Christmas comedy, it is one that all ages will be sure to enjoy and treasure.

16. Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983)

G | 26 min | Animation, Short, Comedy

The classic Disney animated characters play the roles in this animated retelling of the Charles Dickens masterpiece.

Director: Burny Mattinson | Stars: Alan Young, Wayne Allwine, Hal Smith, Will Ryan

Votes: 15,366 | Gross: $21.00M

A Christmas Carol told with all the familiar gang of Disney characters, and starring Scrooge McDuck in his first film appearance as Ebeneezer Scrooge. Funny, touching, and clever, you'll be watching this every Christmas.

17. The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

G | 85 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

64 Metascore

The Muppets present their own touching rendition of Charles Dickens' classic tale.

Director: Brian Henson | Stars: Michael Caine, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson

Votes: 70,650 | Gross: $27.28M

This time, the Scrooge is Michael Caine. The whole Muppet gang is there, and the familiar story is adapted to fit the Muppets. One curious twist: Scrooge's counting house seems well staffed with fuzzy workers while Cratchit (Kermit the frog) is a kind of supervisor. Full of the usual sight gags and in-jokes, it is great fun.

18. Elf (2003)

PG | 97 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

66 Metascore

Raised as an oversized elf, Buddy travels from the North Pole to New York City to meet his biological father, Walter Hobbs, who doesn't know he exists and is in desperate need of some Christmas spirit.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Zooey Deschanel

Votes: 310,833 | Gross: $173.40M

Silly and surprisingly pleasant, Buddy is a human raised by elves at the North Pole, but as an adult wants to learn about his human birth-parents. For his efforts, he gets a mom and dad, a kid brother, and a job writing books for kids. The North Pole denizens look surprisingly like those in the well-loved Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer stop-action cartoon. Oh yeah...his adopted elf father is played by Bob Newhart! Very funny film.

19. The Small One (1978)

G | 26 min | Animation, Short, Drama

Ordered by his father to sell his old, small donkey, named Small One, a boy in ancient Palestine takes the donkey to the Jerusalem market. Finding no buyers there, the boy is about to give up when he meets a kind man named Joseph.

Directors: Don Bluth, Jack Cutting, Wolfgang Reitherman | Stars: Sean Marshall, William Woodson, Olan Soule, Hal Smith

Votes: 2,092

A less-well known Christmas treasure, this is the story of a Jewish boy who must sell the family donkey because it is too old to be a beast of burden. He meets with one disappointment after another until a kind-faced man makes him an offer. The young man has to travel to Bethlehem with his pregnant wife, and...well you can figure it out. Very heartwarming and sweet.
