Horror, much like comedy, is dependent on timing, and pacing, for effect. Remember Leatherface slamming the steel door open and clubbing the guy with a meat hammer, followed by three brisk shots of his dead, quivering body. Or the scene where Sally and her invalid brother happen to stumble across Leatherface in the woods at night. The pacing is what makes it so effective. You may not like the movie, but you can't deny the skill with which it was made.

As you may have gathered, I am very interested in the subject of film editing. When the Oscars come around each year, the only award I anticipate more than Best Picture and Director, is Best Film Editing. There's a well-known saying that "films are made in the editing room." Although I disagree with this notion (like Sidney Lumet says, "no editor ever put anything on the screen that the director and cinematographer didn't shoot"), I believe that editing - the assembly of all, or part, of the footage - is extremely important. So, getting to the point, if you're interested in the craft of editing, watch movies with a mind for what's being shown and for how long. How brisk or leisurely is the pace? Does the effect complement the film, or hurt it? The pacing of films has become faster and faster in recent times (The Borne Trilogy and MTV have much to do with this in my opinion), but consider Capote. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Pay attention to the opening shots. They last longer than you might expect them to, but the filmmaker is setting something up here: the discovery of the recently slain Clutter family by a young neighbor girl. By letting those opening shots linger, the filmmaker is essentially saying "what you're seeing may look perfectly normal, but there's something else going on here...not everything is what it seems." Those opening shots - indeed, that whole opening sequence - is masterfully put together.
