Top 10 List: Best of 2012

by MinorityReporter | created - 10 Dec 2012 | updated - 28 Dec 2018 | Public

This list might still change around and it probably will but so far 2012 has been a fantastic movie year. It is probably the biggest year of blockbusters to date with whoppers like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall and The Hobbit but unlike many other years these movies are actually of really high quality. That having been said there is also a lot of artistry in movies this year with movies like Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Master or Moonrise Kingdom. Overall 2012 has been a great year to be a fan of movies.

1. Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

PG-13 | 93 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

86 Metascore

Faced with both her hot-tempered father's fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love.

Director: Benh Zeitlin | Stars: Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes

Votes: 85,096 | Gross: $12.80M

An incredibly moving, heartfelt and raw experience. Seen through the eyes of a young girl, this movie walks a careful line between gritty realism and the unparalelled imagination of a child. I can honestly say that Beasts of the Southern Wilds is the most moving film I have seen in upwards of a year and, so far, more than earns the title of movie of the year.

2. Skyfall (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

81 Metascore

James Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench

Votes: 731,452 | Gross: $304.36M

Being a huge Bond fan is and has always been a roller coaster ride of ups and downs with some moments of pure brilliance and some moments of ridicoulousness but I am happy to say that with Skyfall the high has never been higher. Sam Mendes' contribution to the Bond lore is a marvelous combination of the hard edge of the recent Craig films and the charm and wit of the Connery and Moore films. In short Skyfall is the best modern Bond yet.

3. The Master (2012)

R | 138 min | Drama, History

86 Metascore

A Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future - until he is tantalized by the Cause and its charismatic leader.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons

Votes: 186,313 | Gross: $16.38M

A visceral, emotional and stylistic masterpiece. So why isn't it number 1? While The Master might be the overall best acted movie I have seen of the year, unfortunately there were a few elements of the movie that felt unresolved. The first 1,5 hour was brilliant but it dragged slightly in the second half and that is why it "only" garnered a third spot on this list.

4. The Avengers (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,460,181 | Gross: $623.28M

This movie was every bit as satisfying as we could have possibly hoped for and it sets an entirely new standard in terms of epic scale. Simply a terrific action movie and one of the very best super hero movies I have ever had the fortune of watching. You forgive the plot holes because the climax is so damned fulfilling, you will squeel like a little girl.

5. Lincoln (2012)

PG-13 | 150 min | Biography, Drama, History

87 Metascore

As the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Votes: 272,762 | Gross: $182.21M

Man am I happy to put a Spielberg movie on a best of list again. It has been years since the once great filmmaker made something truly spectacular and while Lincoln isn't close to his best work it is a thoughtful, well paced and extremely well acted movie. It comes as no surprise that Daniel Day-Lewis once again dazzles with a truly moving and balanced performance as the titular character and I was not surprised that he pulled home yet another well earned Oscar.

6. Django Unchained (2012)

R | 165 min | Comedy, Drama, Western

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,696,934 | Gross: $162.81M

Django Unchained is a brilliant homage to the spaghetti westerns of our childhoods with superfluous action, brilliant acting and the razor sharp writing we have become accostumed to from Quentin Tarantino. While a tad too long, Django Unchained is a reminder that the western genre still has a lot to offer.

7. The Hunt (2012)

R | 115 min | Drama

77 Metascore

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm

Votes: 364,733 | Gross: $0.69M

For the first time since Festen I have a Danish film on a list of best movies and really it should come as no surprise since it is the same director. Jagten is a frustrating and hard movie to watch but it was also on of the best movie experiences of the entire year. Mads Mikkelsen has never been better and while you will prorbably only want to watch this once that one experience will stay with you forever.

8. Argo (2012)

R | 120 min | Biography, Drama, History

86 Metascore

Acting under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.

Director: Ben Affleck | Stars: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin

Votes: 639,390 | Gross: $136.03M

Let me get one thing out of the way before I say how good a movie this is, because it is a really good, and that is that Ben Affleck needs to STOP casting himself in the lead in his movies. Argo is brilliantly acted except for his own wooden, inconsequential acting and the film would probably have been much higher on my list if he hadn't continously pulled me out of the action with his poor acting.

9. Mud (2012)

PG-13 | 130 min | Adventure, Drama

76 Metascore

Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the vigilantes that are on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.

Director: Jeff Nichols | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard

Votes: 188,936 | Gross: $21.59M

One of the movies that sparked the Maconaissance. It is tense, terse, raw and really emotionally resonant.

10. End of Watch (2012)

R | 109 min | Action, Crime, Drama

68 Metascore

Shot documentary-style, this film follows the daily grind of two young police officers in LA who are partners and friends and what happens when they meet criminal forces greater than themselves.

Director: David Ayer | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera

Votes: 269,299 | Gross: $41.00M
