Movies based on comic books seem to be taking Hollywood by storm, with Marvel studios firmly in the driver’s seat. Now, most agree that the first Ironman started this revolution and they’d be right. However they’ve (Hollywood that is) been making good (and bad) comic book movies for a lot longer then you may think. Let’s tip our collective hats to the top ten comic book inspired movies.

If I left out your favorite movies please let me know. As always, any and all comments are welcome.

1. Blade (1998)

47 Metascore

A half-vampire, half-mortal man becomes a protector of the mortal race, while slaying evil vampires.

Director: Stephen Norrington | Stars: Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, N'Bushe Wright

Votes: 299,062 | Gross: $70.09M

The first Blade stands as one of my favorite comic book movies. It's darker and grittier then any other Marvel movie to date.

2. Hellboy (2004)

PG-13 | 122 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

72 Metascore

A demon raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to become a defender against the forces of darkness.

Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, Selma Blair, John Hurt

Votes: 350,156 | Gross: $59.62M

One of the best "lesser known" comic book movies out there. Hellboy didn't come from Marvel or DC but it still packs just as much punch as its more star leaden movies.

3. Sin City (2005)

R | 124 min | Crime, Thriller

74 Metascore

An exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.

Directors: Frank Miller, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez | Stars: Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba

Votes: 793,910 | Gross: $74.10M

Talk about gritty and dark, this movie goes places that Marvel or DC wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

4. 300 (2006)

R | 117 min | Action, Drama

52 Metascore

In the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Dominic West

Votes: 864,536 | Gross: $210.61M

This movie will take your breath away... then punch you in the face. It you haven't seen it, you need to.

5. Iron Man (2008)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

79 Metascore

After being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges

Votes: 1,125,209 | Gross: $318.41M

You can thank this movie for all the new comic book movies at your local movie theater. This is the best Ironman and one of the best comic book movies to date.

6. The Dark Knight (2008)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Crime, Drama

84 Metascore

When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine

Votes: 2,871,741 | Gross: $534.86M

The best "new" Batman movie by far. This movie has one of the best performances I've ever seen. The Joker, played by the late great Heath Ledger is incredible.

7. Watchmen (2009)

R | 162 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

56 Metascore

In a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman

Votes: 582,677 | Gross: $107.51M

Where most of the movies on this list have a ton of material to draw from, Watchmen has only one graphic novel to pull its inspiration from. None the less this movie delivers on a couple levels.

8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Comedy, Fantasy

69 Metascore

In a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick

Votes: 465,473 | Gross: $31.49M

This movie is so much fun. Every scene of this movie screams “comic book”.

9. The Avengers (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Sci-Fi

69 Metascore

Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner

Votes: 1,459,697 | Gross: $623.28M

This movie has more star power then pretty much any movie on the market. Add that with the fact that it’s a great movie and you can’t go wrong.

10. Thor: The Dark World (2013)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

54 Metascore

When the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.

Director: Alan Taylor | Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 725,243 | Gross: $206.36M

The latest and greatest from Marvel. They seem to have found the perfect balance of action, humor and romance.
