"I met him, fifteen years ago; I was told there was nothing left; no reason, no conscience, no understanding; and even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes... the devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil. " - Dr Samuel Loomis

1. Halloween (1978)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

90 Metascore

Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes

Votes: 306,954 | Gross: $47.00M

GOOD THINGS - Just about everything - music, acting, Curtis, Pleasance, The Shape - One of the best told horror stories of all time. This is the reason why we're still here, watching the others. This is absolute perfection.

2. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)

R | 86 min | Horror, Thriller

52 Metascore

Laurie Strode, now the dean of a Northern California private school with an assumed name, must battle the Shape one last time, as the life of her own son hangs in the balance.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Josh Hartnett, Adam Arkin, Michelle Williams

Votes: 82,069 | Gross: $55.04M

GOOD THINGS - Jamie Lee Curtis, The Shape returns - Actually displaying more understanding of the character than any of the other sequels, or movies. A perfect ending to the "trilogy" of H1-H2-H20. You don't really need the others. Very orchestral theme version, but really well used - Not overly gratuitous - The ending is worthy of the original.

BAD THINGS - Josh Hartnett, LL Cool J

3. Halloween II (1981)

R | 92 min | Horror

40 Metascore

While Dr. Loomis hunts for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, and The Shape is not far behind her.

Director: Rick Rosenthal | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, Charles Cyphers, Jeffrey Kramer

Votes: 101,758 | Gross: $25.53M

GOOD THINGS - A direct sequel to the original; Pleasance, Curtis; The Shape is stilll threatening, the music is plastered on as thick as possible, but with music this great, who cares; provides some kind of "closure" to the original

BAD THINGS - The brother/sister thing, which even Carpenter hated - Starting off a wave of sequels, which recinded the endings of each subsequent movie - there didn't really need to be a sequel, did there? - Rather over the top kills, annoying characters

4. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

R | 88 min | Horror, Thriller

34 Metascore

Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers awakens on Halloween Eve and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece. Can Dr. Loomis stop him?

Director: Dwight H. Little | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris, George P. Wilbur

Votes: 58,662 | Gross: $17.77M

GOOD THINGS - some really good moments - Actually has a better understanding of "The Shape" than H2 - Danielle Harris - Very good theme variation - Pleasance - the final shot

BAD THINGS - slightly derivative; doesn't get out of the ending to H2 effectively - Myers stabbing someone with a rifle?!

5. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

R | 87 min | Horror, Thriller

10 Metascore

Six years after Michael Myers last terrorized Haddonfield, he returns there in pursuit of his niece, Jamie Lloyd, who has escaped with her newborn child, for which Michael and a mysterious cult have sinister plans.

Director: Joe Chappelle | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Paul Rudd, Marianne Hagan, Mitchell Ryan

Votes: 42,063 | Gross: $15.12M

GOOD THINGS - Some atmospheric shots; The opening

BAD THINGS - Totally hacked up storyline; little plot-sense; A terrible send-off for Donald Pleasance; Arguably the poorest version of the main theme ever; A rather low-energy cast; The whole cult concept

6. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

R | 96 min | Horror, Thriller

28 Metascore

One year after the events of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), the Shape returns to Haddonfield once again in an attempt to kill his now-mute niece.

Director: Dominique Othenin-Girard | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, Beau Starr

Votes: 47,098 | Gross: $11.64M

GOOD THINGS - Danielle Harris, some interesting ideas, A cool opening; Pleasance; Mental Tina ("I hate cats"...?)

BAD THINGS - A plotless runaround; The crappest mask in the franchise; No momentum; barely any Myers; No understanding of the character - This was shot without a finished script quickly, and cheaply, and it shows; A rather poor use of the theme music; Terribly annoying characters; A poor resolution

7. Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

R | 90 min | Horror, Thriller

19 Metascore

Three years after he last terrorized his sister, Michael Myers confronts her again, before traveling to Haddonfield to deal with the cast and crew of a reality show which is being broadcast from his old home.

Director: Rick Rosenthal | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Busta Rhymes, Brad Loree, Bianca Kajlich

Votes: 49,298 | Gross: $30.35M

GOOD THINGS - The pre-credits scene

Bad Things - The Pre-Credits Scene; Everything else

8. Halloween II (2009)

R | 105 min | Horror

35 Metascore

Laurie Strode struggles to come to terms with her brother Michael's deadly return to Haddonfield, Illinois; meanwhile, Michael prepares for another reunion with his sister.

Director: Rob Zombie | Stars: Scout Taylor-Compton, Tyler Mane, Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie

Votes: 59,817 | Gross: $33.39M

GOOD THINGS - Some cool shots; The white horse idea; Danielle Harris; Malcolm McDowell - ONLY BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE BECAUSE it's it's own movie, not trying to copy the original. It's the difference between *beep* and *beep* on your bed.

BAD THINGS - Horrendous characters, The Shape is barely used, and isn't even The Shape most of the time, moping around looking like a hobo rocker; The Shape roars whilst he kills people...?; Dr Loomis does not "love" Mike Myers - this again totally misses the point; Excessively violent; The theme music is used about once in the entire film; Laurie Strode; Rob Zombie; Terrible plot; None of this feels even vaguely like a Halloween movie.

9. Halloween (2007)

R | 109 min | Horror

47 Metascore

After being committed for 15 years, Michael Myers, now a grown man and still very dangerous, escapes from the mental institution and immediately returns to Haddonfield to find his baby sister, Laurie.

Director: Rob Zombie | Stars: Scout Taylor-Compton, Malcolm McDowell, Tyler Mane, Brad Dourif

Votes: 130,626 | Gross: $58.27M

GOOD THINGS - Malcolm MacDowell, The Music, Danielle HArris

BAD THINGS - The biggest travesty in the franchise - Rob Zombie takes over the original movie, and injects it with horrible, horrible people, gives Mike Myers a "bad childhood" - missing the point of "evil incarnate" - Overdoes the mask thing about a billion times too much, bulks Mike Myers up into a 7 foot tall superman, turns Laurie Strode into a mentally retarded slut, wallows in gore and sadism, writes like Quentin Tarrantino aged sixed, with a million swears a second, drags the ending out by about half an hour, has a rubbish ending stuck onto the end of the original ending, and has the cheek to use some of the original lines, as well as copying some scenes shot for shot. This is like letting some aggressive 2 year old watch Halloween, then telling him to go and write his own version of it. THis is the version for gore-seeking idiots who can't watch "old films", and need to have things endlessly "modernised" - Please note, this cost 50 times as much as the original did, and has not a thing to recommend it over the Carpenter version.
