It's not only one of the best films of 2017, but one of the best I've ever seen. It is a monumental insight into the most famous woman in the world during one of the most famous crisis in US history, revealing how she single-handedly stepped up and handled those few hours and days that would be remembered for all time. She refused to be shunted aside, refused to change her clothes to spare the public the sight of husband's blood, refused to slip quietly out the back door with her children, refused to let her husband be treated less than a king in his death. Pablo Larraín's direction and Noah Oppenheim's script are genius, but Natalie Portman's performance is tour de force.

Votes: 93,871 | Gross: $3.74M
I think this is the most honest, most REAL film about grief I've ever seen. And I've watched them all. I thought at first it was a film for children, but it isn't. In fact--I'd be careful about showing it to them because it is terrifying, even to me as an adult. But for anyone who has lost someone, who has experienced the rage that is part of grief, this film is both gut wrenching and healing all at the same time. The anger of grief is the part that no one wants to talk about but it is truly the most transformative part. This film dramatizes that in the most spectacular way. I would make it a mandatory part of training for grief counselors. And, at the right time, a must-see for those who are grieving. Liam Neeson, who, himself, lost his wife suddenly in a skiing accident in 2009, is AMAZING as the monster. Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones are so believable but the little boy, played by Lewis MacDougall, will crawl into your heart and turn it inside out... Now playing on HBO.

The blurb describing this movie is wrong. So is its category as a sci-fi, although it has a sci-fi elements.. It is really a mystery. More importantly, it's an important exploration of the role memory plays in how we define ourselves, how memories are altered by our emotions and how they can determine, even alter the course of our lives. The caliber of the cast reflects how important this film is--or could have been. I love Peter Dinklage's work, which is always authentic, nuanced and layered. Julia Ormond is stellar, giving a believable performance of the complexity of a widow's grief. Anton Yelchin delivers a stand-out performance, just short of stealing the show.
My only criticism is that the script doesn't go far enough or deep enough for me, personally, which may have been due to the co-writers' inexperience, but I suspect it had more to do with the convoluted & multiplicitous nature of memory itself when compounded with its entanglement in the time-space continuum. A case of mirrors reflecting into mirrors, ad infinitum. Still, it is a thought-provoking experience that is definitely worth a watch--maybe even two.
