U.K. gay activists work to help miners during their lengthy strike of the National Union of Mineworkers in the summer of 1984.

Director: Matthew Warchus | Stars: Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine

Votes: 61,667

Funny, uplifting story about a gay and lesbian group supporting the coal miners strike in 1985 Britain and the bond they form with a group in a small town in Wales, having to overcome of course, the initial resistance from some homophobes in the community.

Out 9/26/14, On DVD 12/23/14, Watched On Demand, 1/1/2015.

2. Frost/Nixon (2008)

80 Metascore

A dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Kevin Bacon, Sam Rockwell

Votes: 112,498 | Gross: $18.59M

Wouldn't think behind the scenes story of an interview would be so dramatically compelling. It is. Fascinating look at Nixon's and Frost's personalities, and Sam Rockwell as researcher James Reston, Jr. is fabulous.

Out 12/5/08, On DVD 4/21/09, Watched 1/5/15.

3. What If (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 98 min | Comedy, Romance

59 Metascore

Wallace, who is burned out from a string of failed relationships, forms an instant bond with Chantry, who lives with her longtime boyfriend. Together, they puzzle out what it means if your best friend is also the love of your life.

Director: Michael Dowse | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Megan Park, Adam Driver

Votes: 81,708 | Gross: $3.45M

A fun rom-com with the great Zoe Kazan, who is brilliant in everything she does. Liked it very much, even though The Last Waltz with Michelle Williams is a deeper look at the consequences of a woman falling in love with a man when she's already in love with another one.

Out 8/1/14, On DVD 11/25/14, Watched 1/7/15

4. Jesus Henry Christ (2011)

PG-13 | 92 min | Comedy

41 Metascore

At the age of ten, Henry James Herman, a boy who was conceived in a petri-dish and raised by his feminist mother, follows a string of Post-It notes in hopes of finding his biological father.

Director: Dennis Lee | Stars: Jason Spevack, Toni Collette, Michael Sheen, Samantha Weinstein

Votes: 6,302 | Gross: $0.02M

Cute, but an amateur script, surprised talents like Toni Colette and Michael Sheen did this.

Out 4/20/12, Watched 1/6/15

5. Last Vegas (2013)

PG-13 | 105 min | Comedy

48 Metascore

Billy, Paddy, Archie and Sam have been best friends since childhood. When Billy proposes to his much-younger girlfriend, they go to Vegas to relive their glory days. However, the decades have changed Sin City and tested their friendship.

Director: Jon Turteltaub | Stars: Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline

Votes: 136,898 | Gross: $63.91M

Thought it was just going to be a silly, 60-year-olds partying like twenntysomethings (that's expectations trailer set), but it's actually a poignant (but still lighthearted) look at friendship and love.

Out 11/1/13, On DVD 1/28/14, Watched 1/8/15

6. Run & Jump (2013)

Unrated | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

71 Metascore

An American doctor travels to Ireland to study the Casey family after 38-year-old Conor suffers a stroke which changes his personality, leaving dynamo wife and mother Vanetia to run the show.

Director: Steph Green | Stars: Maxine Peake, Edward MacLiam, Will Forte, Ciara Gallagher

Votes: 1,326 | Gross: $0.01M

Terrific understated movie. After this and Nebraska, I want to see every movie Will Forte is in.

Out 1/24/14, On DVD 5/27/14, saw 1/18/15

7. This Is Where I Leave You (2014)

R | 103 min | Comedy, Drama

44 Metascore

After their father passes away, four grown siblings are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes, and might-have-beens.

Director: Shawn Levy | Stars: Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Adam Driver

Votes: 89,301 | Gross: $34.29M

A movie based on a novel by one of my favorite authors (Jonathan Tropper), with the screenplay written by that author, featuring some of my favorite actors (Jason Bateman, Tiny Fey, Rose Byrne, Timothy Olyphant) with two prominently featured songs by one of my favorite musicians (Alexi Murdoch) - what's more to ask! I loved it.

Out 9/9/14, On DVD 12/16/14, Saw 1/23/15

8. Magic in the Moonlight (2014)

PG-13 | 97 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

54 Metascore

A romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle. Personal and professional complications ensue.

Director: Woody Allen | Stars: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater

Votes: 70,907 | Gross: $10.51M

In the silly little adventure genre of Woody Allen movies, but a fun, entertaining one in that mold.

Out 7/25/14, On DVD 12/16,15, Saw 2/8/15
