My Most Anticipated Movies of 2020

by AMerchant418 | created - 13 Dec 2019 | updated - 14 Dec 2019 | Public

It's a new decade! We'll have to see if the next ten years' movies live up to their potential or if we'll fall further down the tired sequel hole plaguing many big franchises right now. 2020 is a bit of an off year in film; many of the most exciting directors and the super hero/Star Wars big boys are on soft years or taking a breather entirely. It'll be interesting to see what rises up, but for now here's what has me buzzing.

1. Dune (2021)

PG-13 | 155 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

74 Metascore

A noble family becomes embroiled in a war for control over the galaxy's most valuable asset while its heir becomes troubled by visions of a dark future.

Director: Denis Villeneuve | Stars: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac

Votes: 857,816 | Gross: $108.33M

A risk if ever there was one, "Daddy Denis" Villeneuve takes on this iconic, weird fantasy sci-fi epic and brings with him a posse of talent. While Frank Herbert's classic novel has seen adaptations of middling to little success before, Legendary's megabudget attempt (with an accompanying TV series to boot) is definitely the most ambitious so far. It'll be wildly interesting to see if Villeneuve and company's swing for the fences is a home run or total dud- though Denis' rock-solid track record has me very optimistic. At any rate, it will be fun to see the strange mix of Dune superfans and Zendaya superfans in the cinema next Christmas.

2. In the Heights (2021)

PG-13 | 143 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

84 Metascore

In Washington Heights, a sympathetic New York bodega owner saves every penny every day as he imagines and sings about a better life.

Director: Jon M. Chu | Stars: Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera

Votes: 52,142

After years in development hell (including an unfortunate journey through the Weinstein blender), the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's first hit Broadway show is seeing the light of day. I'm already a big fan of the show and its soundtrack, and the first trailer that dropped this week was everything I was hoping for from a movie. And while I wasn't a fan of director Jon Chu's breakout hit Crazy Rich Asians, he totally brings the right visual style to bring this story to screen. In the Heights is going to rule!

3. Tenet (2020)

PG-13 | 150 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

69 Metascore

Armed with only the word "Tenet," and fighting for the survival of the entire world, CIA operative, The Protagonist, journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a global mission that unfolds beyond real time.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Juhan Ulfsak

Votes: 593,090 | Gross: $58.46M

Of all the films on this list, Tenet is by far the most mysterious. All we know is that it's a big-budget sci-fi action thriller written and directed by Christopher Nolan and boasts an impressive cast with awesome out-of-the-box picks like John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki. Nolan's ever-impressive ambition doesn't always match his execution, but he is one of precious few directors who can get unique original ideas greenlit into major studio gambles. And the man's very solid body of work thus far means his latest enigmatic project is always one to watch out for.

4. The French Dispatch (2021)

R | 107 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

75 Metascore

A love letter to journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional twentieth century French city that brings to life a collection of stories published in "The French Dispatch Magazine".

Director: Wes Anderson | Stars: Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux

Votes: 150,716

Wes Anderson is on a hot streak. While the man has yet to make a bad movie, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Isle of Dogs right in a row is some of his best work yet. As usual, Anderson has put together a staggering cast for his next movie which at one point was a musical but is about journalism and France. It's going to be splendid.

5. Last Night in Soho (2021)

R | 116 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

65 Metascore

Aspiring fashion designer Eloise is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s, where she encounters dazzling wannabe singer Sandie. But the glamour is not as it seems, and the dreams of the past crack and splinter into something darker.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg

Votes: 177,161

We really can't know what to expect from Edgar Wright's latest project- an original psychological horror feature that seems could be far removed from the zany fun of his filmography. After Baby Driver proved to be the largest success of his career yet, I'm impressed to see Wright continue to push his creative limits rather than fall into the trappings of franchise money. The film's intriguing cast includes Anya-Taylor Joy, Matt Smith, and the meteorically rising Thomasin McKenzie. I can't wait to find out what the hell this movie is.

6. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Drama

78 Metascore

After thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN's elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.

Director: Joseph Kosinski | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer

Votes: 697,961 | Gross: $718.73M

In between almost killing himself time and time again for our entertainment in the increasingly awesome Mission: Impossible franchise, the (57-year-old?!) Tom Cruise has found time for a sequel to one of his most beloved classics. Top Gun is very 80s, so I will be interested to see the tone this follow-up strives for, and if it will click with audiences. Regardless, director Joseph Kosinski and cinematographer Claudio Miranda are sure to bring more of their beautiful visual style to the film, so at the very least it should be dazzling to look at.

7. No Time to Die (2021)

PG-13 | 163 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

68 Metascore

James Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when Felix Leiter, an old friend from the CIA, turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga | Stars: Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Rami Malek, Léa Seydoux

Votes: 444,968 | Gross: $160.87M

It's a cycle- Daniel Craig says he's done with James Bond, they search for a replacement, they throw money at Daniel Craig, Daniel Craig comes back as James Bond. While the star has always been great in the lead role, these films have been hit or miss over the last 15 years. 2012's Skyfall was excellent, but the franchise lost steam again with the forgettable Spectre. Hopefully 007 finds its mojo again with an interesting director choice in Cary Funakaga and a really fun cast with promising new additions like Rami Malek and Ana de Armas.

8. A Quiet Place Part II (2020)

PG-13 | 97 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

71 Metascore

Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.

Director: John Krasinski | Stars: Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Cillian Murphy, John Krasinski

Votes: 273,133 | Gross: $160.07M

The first entry in this budding horror franchise utilized its gimmicky premise to surprisingly great effect, thanks to smart writing and directing from the multi-talented John Krasinski. The former sitcom star returns behind the camera for this sequel which is a direct continuation of what came before. If Quiet Place II captures the very effective suspense-terror of the first flick, it will prove the very rare successful horror sequel. Regardless, it will be interesting to see where Krasinski takes his characters next.

9. The King's Man (2021)

R | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

44 Metascore

In the early years of the 20th century, the Kingsman agency is formed to stand against a cabal plotting a war to wipe out millions.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Harris Dickinson

Votes: 173,685 | Gross: $37.18M

Here's a series that got off to a stunning start back in 2015, but then lost all of its momentum with a lackluster sequel. This prequel/origin story of sorts separates itself from the current continuation, likely to breathe new life into the already stagnating brand. I'm cautiously optimistic that Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, and the excellent cast can bring back some of the goofy violent fun that made Kingsman feel so fresh and exciting in the first place.

10. Gretel & Hansel (2020)

PG-13 | 87 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

64 Metascore

A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.

Director: Oz Perkins | Stars: Sophia Lillis, Samuel Leakey, Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw

Votes: 34,052 | Gross: $15.35M

Usually when I throw an indie film into my anticipated list, it backfires terribly. But I just can't help myself- here we go again. Oz Perkins' first two horror features, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and The Blackcoat's Daughter, were very deliberately paced movies that boldly defy expectations. I left both movies feeling disappointed but their imagery, unsettling mood, and meticulous craft stuck with me. Gretel & Hansel's minimalistic forest horror looks to be another very creepy time.
