1. Live and Let Die (1973)

PG | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

55 Metascore

James Bond is sent to stop a diabolically brilliant heroin magnate armed with a complex organisation and a reliable psychic tarot card reader.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Seymour, Clifton James

Votes: 115,555 | Gross: $35.38M

"Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney and The Wings was probably the first Bond theme to stray quite far from the original recipe. While this makes it less recognizably Bond it still has the essential four chords that make it "Bondy" enough. It makes it to the top of my list for being just a very catchy, nice song while also opening up the franchise to more musical experimentation.

Grade: A+

2. You Only Live Twice (1967)

PG | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

61 Metascore

James Bond and the Japanese Secret Service must find and stop the true culprit of a series of space hijackings, before war is provoked between Russia and the United States.

Director: Lewis Gilbert | Stars: Sean Connery, Akiko Wakabayashi, Mie Hama, Tetsurô Tanba

Votes: 117,615 | Gross: $43.08M

I find it very difficult to rank the Connery/Barry era themes with vocals. They're all great and legendary. Most people would probably chose Goldfinger because it's so recognizable, but my top position narrowly goes to "You Only Live Twice" by Nancy Sinatra for being slightly more unique. It has this nice touch of Japanese instrumentation while being perhaps a tad more emotional. The tune is just so nice and memorable, which is why I think it has been remixed and reinterpreted so many times.

Grade: A+

3. A View to a Kill (1985)

PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

40 Metascore

The recovery of a microchip from the body of a fellow British secret agent leads James Bond to a mad industrialist scheming to cause massive destruction.

Director: John Glen | Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace Jones

Votes: 104,969 | Gross: $50.33M

"A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran has it all. It's very recognizably Bond. It's very recognizably Duran Duran. It's a catchy, hard hitting and emotional without ever getting boring. Also + points for perfectly catching the 80s style of music.

Grade: A+

4. GoldenEye (1995)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

65 Metascore

Years after a friend and fellow 00 agent is killed on a joint mission, a secret space based weapons program known as "GoldenEye" is stolen. James Bond is assigned to stop a Russian crime syndicate from using the weapon.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen

Votes: 270,341 | Gross: $106.60M

While not a strong personal favorite I recognize that the Tina Turner theme for Goldeneye is really catchy and recognizable. I seem to remember that the song was played everywhere when the film was released in the 90s. It also marked a return to the original style of Bond themes, as was the case with Skyfall, but still retains its own unique style and sound.

Grade: A

5. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

52 Metascore

James Bond sets out to stop a media mogul's plan to induce war between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global media coverage.

Director: Roger Spottiswoode | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh, Teri Hatcher

Votes: 204,768 | Gross: $125.33M

"Tomorrow Never Dies" by Sheryl Crow is in my opinion one of the most underrated Bond themes. It's slightly more low key than many of the others at the top of my list but shows how to perfectly execute a slower Bond theme. It has a very nice guitar back play during the verses which is almost reminiscent of Led Zeppelin or The Eagles, while Sheryl has a very beautiful voice. Unlike many of the other slower Bond themes it also has a strong climax during the refrain with this classy blues piano which prevents it from ever becoming boring, and a very smooth transition back to the verse.

The film has an additional end title song called "Surrender" by K.D. Lang which is also quite good.

Grade: A

6. Skyfall (2012)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

81 Metascore

James Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench

Votes: 731,452 | Gross: $304.36M

It was played almost constantly on the radio back in 2012 and everywhere you could hear people humming around to the Skyfall chorus by Adele. It's a very catchy song which falls quite close to the original style of Bond themes despite being made in the 2010s. Probably the best Bond theme of the Craig era. Only reason it doesn't get top grade is for being slightly generic.

Grade: A-

7. Dr. No (1962)

PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

78 Metascore

A resourceful British government agent seeks answers in a case involving the disappearance of a colleague and the disruption of the American space program.

Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Bernard Lee, Joseph Wiseman

Votes: 179,506 | Gross: $16.07M

The original jazz/blues big band orchestra theme by Monty Norman and John Barry gets a lot of points for being first and having created what could almost be called a musical genre. It laid the groundwork for all the music to come. It's perhaps not something you would just listen to as a standalone piece of music though.

Grade: A-

8. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

PG | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

61 Metascore

British agent James Bond goes undercover to pursue the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is planning to hold the world to ransom.

Director: Peter R. Hunt | Stars: George Lazenby, Diana Rigg, Telly Savalas, Gabriele Ferzetti

Votes: 99,506 | Gross: $22.80M

"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" sort of cheats by having two Bond themes. There is the opening theme by John Barry which has no vocals, but it's a great classical Bond theme with the addition of this really awesome synth sound which would become common in later Bond soundtracks. Then there is the love song "We Have All The Time In The World" by Barry and Louis Armstrong which is very emotional and beautiful. Really great all together.

Grade: A-

9. Goldfinger (1964)

PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

87 Metascore

While investigating a gold magnate's smuggling, James Bond uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox gold reserve.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton

Votes: 202,668 | Gross: $51.08M

One of the most recognizable Bond themes of all time. Though personally I think the singing of Shirley Bassey is a bit over the top at times.

Grade: B+

10. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

PG | 125 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

55 Metascore

James Bond investigates the hijacking of British and Russian submarines carrying nuclear warheads, with the help of a K.G.B. agent whose lover he killed.

Director: Lewis Gilbert | Stars: Roger Moore, Barbara Bach, Curd Jürgens, Richard Kiel

Votes: 116,332 | Gross: $46.80M

The Roger More era had a lot of nice, soft pop songs for their Bond themes. "Nobody Does It Better" than Carly Simon and it's probably the most chill Bond song of all time. Perhaps a bit too slow at times, but still a very nice song. + points for funny appearance in Lost in Translation.

Grade: B+

11. From Russia with Love (1963)

PG | 115 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

83 Metascore

James Bond willingly falls into an assassination plot involving a naive Russian beauty in order to retrieve a Soviet encryption device that was stolen by S.P.E.C.T.R.E.

Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Robert Shaw, Lotte Lenya, Daniela Bianchi

Votes: 145,447 | Gross: $24.80M

Another strong contender from the Connery era and a true classic. Slightly slower and more sentimental than the rest, in a good way.

Grade: B+

12. Thunderball (1965)

PG | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

64 Metascore

James Bond heads to the Bahamas to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Agent Emilio Largo in an international extortion scheme.

Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi, Luciana Paluzzi

Votes: 127,172 | Gross: $63.60M

If someone were to make a parody of what a typical Bond theme sounds like I think it would sound like this song by Tom Jones, and I really like it.

Grade: B

13. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)

PG | 125 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

43 Metascore

James Bond is targeted by the world's most expensive assassin, while he attempts to recover sensitive solar cell technology that is being sold to the highest bidder.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams

Votes: 113,144 | Gross: $20.97M

Musically "The Man with the Golden Gun" by Lulu is probably one of the most awesome Bond themes of all time, with this very cool 70s guitar riff playing behind a classical, hard hitting Bond theme. But it gets some minus points for its slightly awkward lyrics.

Grade: B

14. The Living Daylights (1987)

PG | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

59 Metascore

James Bond is sent to investigate a KGB policy to kill all enemy spies, and uncovers an arms deal that potentially has major global ramifications.

Director: John Glen | Stars: Timothy Dalton, Maryam d'Abo, Jeroen Krabbé, Joe Don Baker

Votes: 105,909 | Gross: $51.19M

"The Living Daylights" by A-ha has a lot of the same qualities as "A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran. I would rank them quite equally, except that the A-ha theme has slightly less punch, while Duran Duran gets extra points for being first. This also marks the last Bond song that I would qualify as unambiguously good. The rest of the list is a slightly more mixed bag.

Grade: B

15. Licence to Kill (1989)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

58 Metascore

A vengeful James Bond goes rogue to infiltrate and take down the organization of a drug lord who has murdered his friend's new wife and left him near death.

Director: John Glen | Stars: Timothy Dalton, Robert Davi, Carey Lowell, Talisa Soto

Votes: 112,151 | Gross: $34.67M

"License to Kill" is not a bad song and I really like the singing by Gladys Knight. In between all the other great Bond songs however it is slightly anonymous and forgettable.

Grade: C

16. Octopussy (1983)

PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

63 Metascore

A fake Fabergé egg recovered from the body of a fellow agent leads James Bond to uncover a jewel smuggling operation led by the mysterious Octopussy, and a plot to blow up a NATO air base.

Director: John Glen | Stars: Roger Moore, Maud Adams, Louis Jourdan, Kristina Wayborn

Votes: 113,041 | Gross: $67.90M

"All Time High" by Rita Coolidge has a lot of similarities to "Nobody Does It Better" of the same era. It's very nostalgic to listen to and I especially like the end of the chorus when Rita goes in to this low pitch with a smooth guitar back play. On the whole however the song is perhaps a bit boring.

Grade: C

17. Never Say Never Again (1983)

PG | 134 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

68 Metascore

A S.P.E.C.T.R.E. agent has stolen two American nuclear warheads, and James Bond must find their targets before they are detonated.

Director: Irvin Kershner | Stars: Sean Connery, Kim Basinger, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow

Votes: 73,183 | Gross: $55.50M

"Never Say Never Again" is not really a part of the cannon, but the song by Lani Hall is actually quite cool. It gives me a bit of the same vibe as Barry Manilow's Copacabana, but it doesn't feel very right for Bond and it's also a tad too slow.

Grade: C

18. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

PG | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

59 Metascore

A diamond smuggling investigation leads James Bond to Las Vegas where he uncovers an evil plot involving a rich business tycoon.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Sean Connery, Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana Wood

Votes: 114,206 | Gross: $43.82M

Another song by Shirley Bassey, who might be called the queen of Bond songs. By all accounts this is also a strong Bond theme, but the lyrics are a bit lazy and I would probably call it the weakest of the Connery era songs.

Grade: C

19. Casino Royale (2006)

PG-13 | 144 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

80 Metascore

After earning 00 status and a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007. Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro.

Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright

Votes: 694,940 | Gross: $167.45M

"Casino Royale" by Chris Cornell is probably my second favorite Craig era song. It has a strong rock vibe which is cool. I especially like the verses of the song. However, the song falls a bit flat for me during the refrain.

Grade: C

20. Moonraker (1979)

PG | 126 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

James Bond investigates the mid-air theft of a space shuttle, and discovers a plot to commit global genocide.

Director: Lewis Gilbert | Stars: Roger Moore, Lois Chiles, Michael Lonsdale, Richard Kiel

Votes: 108,852 | Gross: $70.31M

Yet another Bassey song. Not bad, but a bit forgettable in my opinion.

Grade: C-

21. The World Is Not Enough (1999)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

57 Metascore

James Bond uncovers a nuclear plot while protecting an oil heiress from her former kidnapper, an international terrorist who can't feel pain.

Director: Michael Apted | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle, Denise Richards

Votes: 210,048 | Gross: $126.94M

"The World Is Not Enough" is not garbage at all. It has a very strong Bond vibe and interesting vocals. The verses are a bit slow though and the refrain a bit too generic. The last 30 seconds are really great though.

Grade: C-

22. Spectre (I) (2015)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

60 Metascore

A cryptic message from James Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover the existence of a sinister organisation named SPECTRE. With a new threat dawning, Bond learns the terrible truth about the author of all his pain in his most recent missions.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ralph Fiennes

Votes: 466,485 | Gross: $200.07M

Like a lot of Craig era Bond themes "Writing's On The Wall" by Sam Smith has all the right sounds and ingredients needed to make a good Bond theme. The problem however is that it spends a lot of time building up to this climax in the refrain which is quite underwhelming when it finally arrives, and that makes the song fall flat for me. Radiohead made their own proposal for this movie which was rejected. As a big fan of Radiohead I probably like the rejected version more, but even that song suffers from an anticlimactic refrain, in my opinion.

Grade: D

23. No Time to Die (2021)

PG-13 | 163 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

68 Metascore

James Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when Felix Leiter, an old friend from the CIA, turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga | Stars: Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Rami Malek, Léa Seydoux

Votes: 445,119 | Gross: $160.87M

I really like Billie Eilish and her top hit "Bad Guy" is one of the most catchy songs of the decade, but my criticism of Spectre's "Writing's On The Wall" feels equally valid for her theme "No Time To Die".

Grade: D

24. For Your Eyes Only (1981)

PG | 127 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

54 Metascore

Secret service agent James Bond is assigned to find a missing British vessel equipped with a weapons encryption device and prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

Director: John Glen | Stars: Roger Moore, Carole Bouquet, Topol, Lynn-Holly Johnson

Votes: 108,358 | Gross: $62.30M

"For Your Eyes Only" by Sheena Easton is probably the best song at the bottom of my list. It's a good 80's ballad, but I have never been a big fan of ballads like this. I can't find anything James Bond about the song either, so that's why it ranks so low. Sorry Sheena :)

Grade: D

25. Quantum of Solace (2008)

PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

58 Metascore

James Bond descends into mystery as he tries to stop a mysterious organisation from eliminating a country's most valuable resource.

Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench

Votes: 471,010 | Gross: $168.37M

I have som friends who really like this song so this might be controversial. "Another Way to Die" was made by Alicia Keys and Jack White from the White Stripes. I'm a big fan of the latter so I really want to like this song. It starts of quite nicely with a clear Bond feel, while still being very recognizably Alicia Keys and Jack White. Around the one minute mark however the song reaches its refrain and I find it really naggy and tiresome to listen to. Sorry to all the fans out there.

Grade: E

26. Die Another Day (2002)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

56 Metascore

James Bond is sent to investigate the connection between a North Korean terrorist and a diamond mogul, who is funding the development of an international space weapon.

Director: Lee Tamahori | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, Toby Stephens

Votes: 229,256 | Gross: $160.94M

Madonna has so many great songs and could have been a great contender for a making a memorable Bond song. I also think the Bond music franchise remains relatively unexplored by the electronic music industry. More than anything else I would love to see a Bond theme which could be played in a Berlin style dance club. I don't know if that's what they attempted to do here, but whatever it was it wasn't successful. From the annoying strings to the repetitive lyrics and just flat progression, this is not a good song.

Grade: F
