Director: Denis Villeneuve | Stars: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem

Votes: 381,910

8/10, Not sure I can quite get this to a 9 but its certainly a high 8 at the least. It is a visual spectacle, wish I went a bit further from my house to see in IMAX, perhaps will give a second watch there! The story is phenomenal and if anything the movie was too short and should have been over 3hrs as some things did feel a bit glossed over. Characters did feel sapped of emotion unfortunately, heart was lacking. Chani different from the book but I admit not to being a huge book fan so complete purity isn't essential for me. Superior to Part One to me, I did tune out some there but fully engaged here despite some flaws.

2. Spy x Family Code: White (2023)

PG-13 | 110 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

68 Metascore

Directors: Kazuhiro Furuhashi, Takashi Katagiri | Stars: Takuya Eguchi, Atsumi Tanezaki, Saori Hayami, Ken'ichirô Matsuda

Votes: 2,268

8/10, If one has seen the anime this film comes from they'll know what to expect though admittedly this film does get rather more insane than even S2 went. Also makes me wonder how their secret identities can be kept, the plausibility is reeeeeealy stretched here. Even so was quite fun.

3. Argylle (2024)

PG-13 | 139 min | Action, Comedy, Thriller

35 Metascore

A reclusive author who writes espionage novels about a secret agent and a global spy syndicate realizes the plot of the new book she's writing starts to mirror real-world events, in real time.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston

Votes: 65,468

7/10, Sure the film was ridiculous and got sillier as it went but I was able to get enjoyment out of it for what it was. Can give this a low 7.

4. Abigail (2024)

R | 109 min | Horror, Thriller

62 Metascore

After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they're locked inside with no normal little girl.

Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett | Stars: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, William Catlett

Votes: 11,419

6/10. I'll say that when the violence of kidnappers vs. vampire girl is happening this has some fun to it. Everything else was dumb though. Well the one guy being able to run after being stabbed in the thigh was dumb too but at least violence can get me to turn my brain off. The dialogue was eye rolling and the main lady doing cold reading on her fellow kidnappers just had me groaning inside.

5. Civil War (2024)

R | 109 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

75 Metascore

A journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

Director: Alex Garland | Stars: Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman

Votes: 53,445

6/10, the film wasn't the trash fire I thought it might be but saying the film was passable is hardly glowing praise. Movie is these "journalists" traveling from NYC to DC, going from one scene of violent clashes to another. The characters are complete non-entities. Were the journalists supposed to be praised? Don't know, in my view they were vainglorious thrill seekers not truth seekers. One mentioned how they "never felt more alive" after escaping death by a hair. Perhaps the script was commenting on how journos seems to be feeding into the civil war hysteria? Or noticing how useless they are, in this film they are trying to upload stuff when most of the country no longer has internet access for instance. Or maybe Civil War is not self aware, who knows.

The factions are vague with no motivations given. A few random buzzwords are dropped but nothing to make me understand why this was happening. Because the film does largely avoid any obvious real life US politics and doesn't replace it with anything. Texas-California joined hands? "Western Forces"? "Portland Maoists"? Okay that one I understand lol. Film is trying to capitalize on the overblown fears of actual civil war but has nothing really to say. It was well shot, which is mainly what is making me give Civil War a low 6 rating. That and Jesse Plemons "what kind of American are you?" scene. Got to wonder how many people saw this film because of that clip from the trailer.

6. Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy, Horror, Romance

47 Metascore

A coming of RAGE love story about a teenager and her crush, who happens to be a corpse. After a set of horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a journey to find love, happiness - and a few missing body parts.

Director: Zelda Williams | Stars: Kathryn Newton, Liza Soberano, Jenna Davis, Trina LaFargue

Votes: 14,464

6/10, This was a rather strange one, felt like its quirkiness was its selling point as I really didn't care for the story that much. Characters were rather annoying as well, felt no love for anyone on screen, meh. Barely passes imo.

7. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

R | 120 min | Action, Drama, War

57 Metascore

The British military recruits a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Eiza González

Votes: 8,011

6.0/10, For all the violence I was bored. Dialogue was snappy, characters flat and jokey. The "witty" people here wanted to give me a headache. Guy Richie always seems to either hit homeruns or strikeout and this is definitely a strikeout to me. Barely stays above water, flat 6 rating from me.

8. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

47 Metascore

Two ancient titans, Godzilla and Kong, clash in an epic battle as humans unravel their intertwined origins and connection to Skull Island's mysteries.

Director: Adam Wingard | Stars: Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle

Votes: 40,980

5/10, alright I never expect anything great out of these, best I hope for is decent. The previous Godzilla vs Kong gave me that decent experience. This one was worse but still not as bad as King of the Monsters was for me. Humans even more of a nonentity (did kill an angry white man though, at least he had some emotion) and most of the monster scenes were CGI bleh. Honestly if it wasn't for the final throwdown at the end I would have rated this worse but it was there to save it somewhat. Mediocre either way, Godzilla Minus One this was not though it will unfortunately make more money. Cost a lot more though...

9. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

PG-13 | 115 min | Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

46 Metascore

When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

Director: Gil Kenan | Stars: Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace

Votes: 30,250

5/10, This was disappointing. I liked the first of these new films but this one just fell flat for me. Quirkiness and awkward banter replaced decent characters. Ones from previous film rammed in when there was really nothing for them to do. Ghost girl? Winced every time she appeared. Various plot beats just felt off, didn't make sense or didn't work. Big Bad was a bad CGI demon lord thing. Spengler girl got lots of people killed didn't she? Reminds me of the kid from Jurassic World.

10. Drive-Away Dolls (2024)

R | 84 min | Action, Comedy, Thriller

56 Metascore

Jamie regrets her breakup with her girlfriend, while Marian needs to relax. In search of a fresh start, they embark on an unexpected road trip to Tallahassee. Things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.

Director: Ethan Coen | Stars: Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Joey Slotnick

Votes: 12,478

5/10, This film had moments but... meh. It really felt like discount Tarantino (saw one of Cohen bros helped write this) and I got discount enjoyment out of it as well. The lesbian element was a lot more prominent than I was expecting, perhaps lesbian sex scenes were more important than plot.

11. Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)

PG | 94 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

54 Metascore

After Po is tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior, while a wicked sorceress plans to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

Directors: Mike Mitchell, Stephanie Stine | Stars: Jack Black, Awkwafina, Viola Davis, Dustin Hoffman

Votes: 33,918

5/10, worst of these so far, franchise really feels tired and old. Jokes feel more lazy and the messaging feels like from fortune cookies. Aquafina being in it did not help at all, just as annoying as she is in everything. Why were the Five left out of the film?

12. Bob Marley: One Love (2024)

PG-13 | 107 min | Biography, Drama, Music

43 Metascore

The story of how reggae icon Bob Marley overcame adversity, and the journey behind his revolutionary music.

Director: Reinaldo Marcus Green | Stars: Kingsley Ben-Adir, Lashana Lynch, James Norton, Tosin Cole

Votes: 22,258

5/10, I gotta admit it, I was bored. I really didn't feel much emotion for this man and what could have been an interesting story. Not much of his music was used either which really baffled me. Editing was poor, scenes ended on certain things that never came up again. Characters came and went and I had no idea who they were and why they were important.

13. Monkey Man (2024)

R | 121 min | Action, Thriller

70 Metascore

An anonymous young man unleashes a campaign of vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systematically victimize the poor and powerless.

Director: Dev Patel | Stars: Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Jatin Malik

Votes: 33,607

4/10, I couldn't finish this, walked out of the theater with 30min or so to go. Was bored and confused. Whether the story, the characters or the violence, all of it was hard to follow. Some of it could be culture confusion, very India specific matters but the script also seemed to have a very hard time explaining anything, throwing random news clips out does not help.

14. The Beekeeper (2024)

R | 105 min | Action, Thriller

54 Metascore

One man's brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as "Beekeepers."

Director: David Ayer | Stars: Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Bobby Naderi, Josh Hutcherson

Votes: 86,557

4/10, Will give this a 4 for now but thinking of lowering. Utter stupidity, what I can expect combining Jason Statham and January.
