R | 114 min | Horror, Thriller

67 Metascore

After quitting dating apps, a woman meets the supposedly perfect man and accepts his invitation to a romantic weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

Director: Mimi Cave | Stars: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sebastian Stan, Jojo T. Gibbs, Andrea Bang

Votes: 74,205

It certainly was. Horrifying, macabre, but with welcome dashes of comedy sprinkled throughout this treatment on the terrors of modern dating. Fresh is a surprising, inventive, edge-of-your-seat horror/thriller.

The camerawork and editing were standout, giving the film an extra vigour, and, well, freshness, which added to the much-needed levity from the violence.

Edgar-Jones and Stan give accomplished performances in their meaty roles. They fully deserve the status boost that a (hopefully) healthy box office release will serve them.

Regardless, this is the sort of film that can become a bit of a cult classic once word gets around. No shelf-life here.

Oh, and this is Mimi Caves feature debut as director. Keep an eye out.

Not nearly as bad as I was expecting. A few eye-rolling moments mostly from Gen-Z idiocy and clunky, overstuffed throwbacks to the original, but there’s a lot of terror and gore reminiscent of the original sweltering abattoir of a movie, with enough new narrative for it to stand on its own limbs (or at least what’s left of them).
