Exclusive: Picture Tree International (Pti) has acquired world sales rights for A Quiet Resilience, the debut feature of rising Swedish, fraternal directorial duo Gustav and David Bengtsson.
The German sales company will unveil the film at the Cannes Marché du Film in May and is aiming for a festival launch later this year.
The drama revolves around a teenager grappling with his fractured family dynamics and the pressures of illegal boxing matches orchestrated by his father.
Amidst these struggles, his quest for meaning and connection exemplifies an indomitable resilience and offers a poignant and authentic examination of contemporary and generational vulnerabilities.
The Bengtsson brothers, who serve as directors and producers of the film, originate from the picturesque Swedish coastal town of Varberg.
A Quiet Resilience is their first feature after a series of well-travelled shorts including Flying Free (2015), Torasidis Last Masterpiece (2021), starring Marc-Jean Barr and Leif Edlund, and Florian (2022) featuring...

The rain stayed away from Santa Monica Beach on Sunday (February 25) as Past Lives was named best film and Celine Song best director at the 39th annual Spirit Awards.
While the legacy studio and streamer contenders have dominated much of the big-ticket awards shows this season like Saturday night’s SAG Awards, last weekend’s Baftas, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, this was a good opportunity for the Oscar-nominated A24 romance and Song to earn gongs for a film which has done well among critics groups since its world premiere at Sundance just over one year ago.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ensign Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) first appeared in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Ensign Ro", and she introduced an interesting character dynamic to the series. Whereas most of the characters on "Next Generation" were wholly devoted to Starfleet principals and unwaveringly loyal to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Ensign Ro felt that Starfleet frequently let suffering go unacknowledged. She was combative and disobedient as a result, often openly defying her captain and responding to diplomatic solutions with belligerence.
Forbes' performance was so assured and defiant, however, that Ro's disobedience never felt impulsive or immature. Her reactions were organic and principled, revealing a hardened but understandable heart. Ro only appeared in eight episodes of "Next Generation," but she was always welcome to shake up the system and offer metaphorical headbutts to her commanding officers.

“American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy and frequent “AHS” star Sarah Paulson reunited back in 2020 for Netflix’s “Ratched,” an 8-episode series telling the origin story of iconic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest villain Nurse Mildred Ratched. The series invited us to “meet the woman before the monster,” and the original plan was for a two season storyline.
Those plans have changed, however. As reported by Deadline, Sarah Paulson has confirmed this week that there will not be a second season of Netflix’s “Ratched” after all.
Two seasons of “Ratched” had originally been ordered up back in 2017.
Here’s the plot synopsis for the first season, which is streaming on Netflix…

The history behind the making of Quentin Tarantino's 1994 movie "Pulp Fiction" is almost as winding and complex as the movie itself, as the young director fought to get his sophomore film made in spite of what seemed like insurmountable odds. Among the difficulties facing Tarantino was the fact that his script was hand-written and barely legible, which isn't exactly the kind of thing that inspires faith in investors. Thankfully, he had the help of typist and photographer Julie Chen, who took Tarantino's handwritten script and typed it up, making it readable for executives. She also let him crash at her place and worked for free, which makes Chen the unsung Mvp of "Pulp Fiction," but someone else got a shout-out in the movie instead: her dead pet rabbit.
In an interview with CBS News in 2014, Chen revealed her full involvement in the creation of "Pulp Fiction" and shared some...

The working relationship between writer and director Quentin Tarantino and actor Tim Roth is excellent, going all the way back to Tarantino's first feature, "Reservoir Dogs." So when it came to his second film, "Pulp Fiction," Tarantino knew he wanted to have Roth involved in some capacity and was going to write a character in the film with him specifically in mind. That character wasn't the now-infamous Pumpkin, however, and the creation of Pumpkin and Amanda Plummer's character Honey Bunny had a whole lot to do with a hilarious request on Roth's part. It's hard to imagine "Pulp Fiction" without Pumpkin and Honey Bunny, who kick off the entire movie with their loving and slightly terrifying conversation immediately before holding up a diner at gunpoint. But according to both Roth and Tarantino, the pairing was somewhat serendipitous.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Prophecy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When it comes to religious-themed horror, there are a few films out there worth watching and when it comes to the early to mid-1990s, a few films really stand out in the dark, moody horror realm. These genres overlap quite a bit, and one stellar example of dark, moody, religious horror is the 1995 film The Prophecy (watch it Here), starring Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, Viggo Mortensen, Eric Stoltz, and Amanda Plummer. The film had a stacked cast for 1995 and it seemed to do decently in horror circles but not so much outside of that. So, what happened to The Prophecy?
What is The Prophecy about?...

In the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard," a vicious Changeling named Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) is eager to apprehend Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Vadic is a vicious killer who has no compunction about blowing up ships and murdering thousands. It seems she and several of her Changeling compatriots were medically tortured during the Dominion War (a conflict dramatized on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") and was in no mood to offer forgiveness. Vadic commanded a starship she called the Shrike, a massive, pointy, claw-like vessel that was armed to the teeth. Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes) took one look at the Shrike and declared it to be more guillotine than starship.
On the bridge of the Shrike, Vadic sat in an enormous chair, surrounded in the shadows by masked servants who fired weapons and cut down enemy combatants. The chair, as it so happens,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

You know, it's pretty refreshing to see the tireless and constantly put-together crew of the USS Enterprise let their hair down sometimes (so to speak) and blow off some steam while on the clock. Tales of the cast of "The Next Generation" goofing off between takes of the original show are practically the stuff of legend, all but driving directors mad with their unparalleled ability to flub lines, break props, and otherwise waste hours and hours of shooting days. So when "Star Trek: Picard" showrunner Terry Matalas gathered the cast together for one final swan song in season 3 of the reunion series, everyone involved simply had to know what they were in for this time around. Now, Trekkies are finally getting a sense of just how infectious their fun-loving and joyful chemistry truly was while on set.

This episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series was Written and Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Adam Walton, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The Chiller Channel was a huge gateway for me. I had been exposed to whatever my mom watched previous to that, or whatever weird shit I found at 2Am… it’s more than you think. Chiller brought me the things I missed out on when they originally aired. One of those is Night Visions.
Night Visions originally aired in 2001, though it was meant to air the year prior, but one of our previous series, Freakylinks took its place. I’m not upset about this– Freakylinks was the series we deserved. Then on July 6th, 2001, brooding punk poet and man of many black tees, Henry Rollins entered our homes through the small screen. He’d probably give me shit for using the word brooding.

Four excellent new movies are waiting to whet your Fourth of July weekend appetite. At least two are family-friendly affairs, but all of them have a joyful spirit that’s apt for holiday viewing.
The contender to watch this week: “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret“
Kelly Fremon Craig‘s charming adaptation of Judy Blume‘s YA classic did modest business in theaters, so it deserves a second life on VOD. Craig, who established her teen movie bona fides with 2016’s “The Edge of Seventeen,” perfectly captures the book’s shrewd spirit. She cast “Ant-Man” actress Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret Simon, an 11-year-old forced to move to a new town where she and her friends endure the anxieties of puberty. Craig’s acclaimed script could make her a Best Adapted Screenplay contender, and the supporting cast — particularly Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie as Margaret’s lovingly scattered parents — are equally worthy Oscar candidates.

During a recent Gold Derby video interview, senior editor Daniel Montgomery and contributor Tony Ruiz spoke in-depth with Patrick Stewart (“Star Trek: Picard”) about his Paramount Plus sci-fi drama, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
While the final season finds Stewart’s iconic character, Jean-Luc Picard, in the comfort of working with his old crew, the admiral is far from comfortable. He deals with the sudden discovery that he has a grown son (Ed Speleers) with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) that he must protect from Vadic (Amanda Plummer), a vengeance-seeking Changeling hell bent on capturing Picard’s son.
“It was in every sense, an extraordinary experience,” Stewart revealed about his three-season return to the world of “Star Trek.” The legendary actor later added, “And although I had serious doubts to begin with, at the end, I regretted nothing.

“We’re all blessed in some ways but also cursed to have the amount of legacy on this show because it means that you have almost 56 years of creative material to draw from, but that also means you have a lot of rules and regulations and canon that you have to adhere to. So there’s a kind of pressure to it as well,” notes “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas about the technical details that have accumulated throughout “Trek” history. We talked to Matalas for our “Making Of” panel series along with costume designer Michael Crow, makeup department head James MacKinnon, prosthetics designer Vincent Van Dyke and visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman. “Star Trek” hasn’t been recognized by the Emmys for acting since the original series aired in the 1960s. Back then Leonard Nimoy earned three bids for his iconic role as Spock. But no actors from the franchise have been nominated since. Will that change with the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard”? The Paramount+ series submitted the following 12 actors for consideration on the Emmy ballot.

“Oh I had many concerns,” admits Sir Patrick Stewart about the prospect of reuniting the the original crew of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard.” As the actor confesses in a recent interview with Gold Derby (watch above), those concerns boiled down to a single central question: “Should I really do this at all?”
Ultimately, Stewart says, the decision to reprise the role of Jean-Luc Picard after so many years came down to the idea of change. Stewart realized that he had changed over the two decades since he had last played the role. “That’s exactly the situation that Picard is in,” he says. “He’s not the same person, and right away that was my cue to investigating what he might have become.”

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was carefully constructed by showrunner Terry Matalas to reunite the central cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and gather them on the bridge of the Enterprise-d. Some of the introductions felt fair and organic. Others felt a little contrived. The inclusion of the Enterprise-d, a ship that had been destroyed in 1994's "Star Trek: Generations," was most certainly forced. But for many, the nostalgia was exhilarating, and seeing a 105-year-old Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) back in action for one last Borg rescue was a thrilling way to end the character's career.
Amid all the nostalgia, however, Matalas managed to introduce a fun, exciting new character into the mix: Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the captain of the U.S.S. Titan-a.
Shaw was thrilling because, unlike most starship captains, he felt no impulse to stand on formality. "Star Trek," especially "Next Generation" was always stringently formal.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Picard."The bulk of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was devoted to the mystery of Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). At the beginning of the story, Jack was being hunted by a mysterious bounty hunter named Vadic (Amanda Plummer) who was willing to kill everyone on board the U.S.S. Titan-a in order to get him. While Jack was indeed a criminal, his crimes weren't entirely serious. Mostly, he and his mother merely smuggled medical supplies to planets overlooked by Federation doctrine. Why was Vadic so hellbent on apprehending him?
By the end of the season, it was revealed that Jack had inherited from Picard a curious brain condition that manifested as superhuman powers. He could read thoughts, and he could project his consciousness into the bodies of others.

Aside from the warmer temps and the arrival of the big Summer blockbuster flix, the waning days of Spring also bring the conclusion of the school year for many students from public schools and colleges. So, how about a fairly somber film set in the world of academia? And to get more specific, perhaps a slice of life set in an art school, a place filled with folks working on projects for display from paint on canvas to hanging bits of string and fabric would “fit the bill”. Yes, that’s the setting for this character study about an artist that learns that much of the hard work of her creative life is focus, determination, and simply Showing Up.
The artist in question is Lizzy (Michelle Williams), who spends most of her time in the workshop space she’s set up in the garage of the house she’s renting.

When "Star Trek" first began as a franchise in the 1960s, it was extremely episodic, relying heavily on the characters and their interactions to help keep viewers engaged from week to week. As television became more serialized and the storylines more complicated, the importance of these character moments became even more vital, serving as connective tissue between the classic "Trek" and the new. Sure, a series might have a two or three-parter each season that's extremely plot driven and relegates character development to the backseat, but a big part of what makes "Star Trek" so endearing is the idea of hanging out with these crews as they go on their adventures and solve intergalactic dilemmas. People become incredibly attached to the characters and hold them to higher scrutiny, making character continuity both a treat and a challenge for "Trek" writers.

Turns out sometimes the true undiscovered country is a revolving door.
At least it is to Capt. Kirk (Paul Wesley), who has some difficulty with one in a funny moment in the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 2 teaser, which also features normal Klingons!
Yes, the monstrous Klingons of “Star Trek: Discovery,” redesigned via additional, far more extravagant prostheses to create a truly terrifying effect, unlike anything we had seen of the warrior alien race on 50 years of previous “Trek,” seem to have been abandoned, if this Season 2 teaser is to be taken at face value. Perhaps the reappearance of Michael Dorn’s Worf on “Star Trek: Picard,” looking as he always did, other than white hair to make him look even cooler, inspired a return to the classic design.

“Star Trek: Picard” ends its run on April 20 after three seasons, and it’s ending on some of the best episodes of its entire run. Will it be rewarded for it by the Emmys? “Star Trek: The Next Generation” had to wait until its final season to finally be nominated for Best Drama Series, and “Picard” deserves the same consideration.
The comparison to “Tng” is especially apt this year. Michelle Yeoh is more in demand than ever following her Best Actress Oscar win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but she hasn’t forgotten her friends in the 23rd century.
The actress is beaming up to be part of “Star Trek” once again for a “Star Trek: Discovery” spinoff movie event for Paramount+, titled “Section 31.” Yeoh was part of the recurring cast of “Discovery” since the show launched in 2017, first playing the benevolent Capt. Philippa Georgiou, then spending far more time onscreen as her evil Mirror Universe twin, Empress Georgiou of the Terran Empire.
Empress Georgiou was transported into “our” universe, which, with the Federation and its emphasis on exploration, is as far different from the conquest-minded fascist Terran Empire as anything could be. Except that there’s a secret faction within Starfleet Intelligence called Section 31 which has always embraced an “ends justify the means” approach to preserving the...

This post contains spoilers for the third season of "Star Trek: Picard."
Early in the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," audiences were introduced to Vadic (Amanda Plummer), a classic, snarling supervillain character. She sported a set of wicked scars on her cheeks, wore a dark cloak, combed her hair forward, and smoked cigarettes (a strange sight in the world of "Star Trek"). She was the captain of a massive, overpowered warship called the Shrike, which was armed with a strange portal-creating weapon and thousands of torpedoes.
As the series went on, it was revealed that Vadic was, in fact, a vengeful Changeling, a shapeshifter that has been subjected to sadistic medical experiments at the hands of an uncaring Federation doctor. She was leading a charge to destroy the Federation using the pilfered brain of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the eerie superpowers of his son, Jack (Ed Speleers). This...

The fourth and final season of “Succession” was always going to be an Emmy threat. The HBO drama about a powerful and wealthy New York media family led by Logan Roy (Brian Cox) amassed a whopping 48 nominations and 13 wins throughout its first three seasons. Nearly half of those bids (23) were for acting, so no one should be surprised if/when the Jesse Armstrong-created series earns several more on its way out, beginning with the guest categories and going all the way up the chain. And no one should be surprised if a few of those nominations also lead to repeat winners.
Cherry Jones is one of three “Succession” actors who have won for their performance thus far (Jeremy Strong and Matthew Macfadyen are the others). She took home the Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actress in 2020 for her turn as Nan Pierce, the formidable head of the wealthy Pierce...

This article contains spoilers for season 3, episode 9 of "Star Trek: Picard."
It's all been leading to this. The penultimate episode of "Star Trek: Picard" finally explained what's up with Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), who has been plagued with voices and visions. It turns out that the next generation of the Picard family is tainted by Jean-Luc's time as Locutus of Borg, and poor Jack is some kind of SuperBorg who can assimilate people with this mind. Vadic (Amanda Plummer) is gone, but the Borg are an even greater threat, and Jack's psychic ties to them make things even worse. Things seem hopeless, except that there's one advantage the crew from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" has over Jack and the Borg: age and wisdom.
"Picard" has sought to give "The Next Generation" a proper send-off, and it's...

This post contains spoilers for the ninth episode of "Star Trek: Picard," season 3.
In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Picard," called "Võx," one of the season's great mysteries has been revealed. Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) has been having strange visions for several episodes, seeing an antique red door appearing in his mind's eye. He also seems to have acquired eerie psychic powers as well as the capability to read thoughts and project his consciousness into other people's brains, effectively taking them over. These abilities made Jack of vital importance to Vadic (Amanda Plummer), a vicious Changeling bounty hunter hellbent on kidnapping him. Vadic also, audiences have learned, hijacked Jean-Luc Picard's dead body from a Federation black site.
The explanation for both Jack's psychic powers and Vadic's grave robbery is, it seems, rather dumb: when Picard was assimilated by the Borg years before, they left a mysterious genetic "mark" in his brain,...

This post contains spoilers up to the ninth episode of "Star Trek: Picard" season 3.
If one is a user of social media ... well, first off, my apologies. But, if so, enterprising Trekkies may find that the hashtag "#StarTrekLegacy" has floated through the discourse. "Star Trek: Legacy" is already the name of a "Trek" tie-in 2006 PC game that allowed players to engage in elaborate starship tactics using vehicles from "Star Trek," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and "Star Trek: Enterprise." The hashtag, however, has nothing to do with the game and is, instead, a plea to Paramount from many fans of "Star Trek: Picard" to launch a spin-off TV series.
For many Trekkies, this fan-proposed television show would ideally be set on board the U.S.S. Titan-a and would star Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw and Jeri Ryan as his first officer, Seven of Nine. "Picard" also introduced several...
