Composer Ryan Shore broke through the fourth wall to talk to us about scoring for Star Wars Forces of Destiny and Galaxy of Adventures.
The Fourth Wall podcast specializes in allowing creative voices from behind the scenes of everyone's favorite TV shows, movies, books, and games to speak directly to our audience, and this episode brings us two-time Emmy and Grammy-nominated composer Ryan Shore, the music expert tasked with weaving John Williams' classic Star Wars score with his own orchestration in Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures as well as designing the original music behind Star Wars Forces of Destiny.
“In Forces of Destiny I was really given a lot of leeway on how to score them,” Shore told our Star Wars reporter, Megan Crouse. “Because I was just starting everything from scratch it really gave me the opportunity to blue sky the episodes. I find...

Composer Ryan Shore had the daunting task of adapting Star Wars' classic score, and we spoke to him about his musical journey.
Star Wars animation has been branching out a lot lately, including the upcoming reboot of The Clone Wars; a main full-length animated show, Star Wars Resistance; and short shows released on YouTube. To write the music for these stories, a composer has to live in the shadow of John Williams, as well as to lift his epic scores up into the light for a new generation of Star Wars fans. For the YouTube shows, that baton has been passed to Ryan Shore, who composed the music for both shows, Forces of Destiny and Galaxy of Adventures.
Of course, John Williams’ music is one of the many iconic elements of Star Wars, and Shore is playing in that sandbox. Galaxy of Adventures is a YouTube series...

Hey, wanna see a CG Sonic battle an evil live-action Dr. Robotnik? Then director Eddie Lebron and the Blue Core team have you covered in January when their Sonic the Hedgehog fan film will make its debut at Maryland's MAGFest gaming convention with an online premiere January 9th, 2013.
The not-for-profit 25-minute short is the latest fan project from Blue Core who back in 2010 produced a Mega Man fan film. This time out, they've brought actor Jaleel White onboard to voice the hedgehog almost 20 years after he played the role in the animated series.
According to the Blue Core Studios page, the short will serve as a prequel to the first game, with disparate elements drawn from throughout the series' canon across various media. Hopefully, none of these elements involve a semi-romantic relationship with a human princess, because that stuff was weird.

Over the last decade and a half, composer Ryan Shore has provided the music to a number of films across a wide range of dramas: from the suburban horror of the Jack Ketchum adaptation The Girl Next Door to the horror comedy Stan Helsing. The Grammy 2012 winners in the "visual media" categories have already been announced. The winner for Best Song Written for Visual Media was Diane Warren's "Born to Be Somebody," from the Justin Bieber documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, sung by Justin Bieber himself (photo). The other contenders were Family Guy's "Christmastime Is Killing Us" by Ron Jones, Seth MacFarlane, and Danny Smith; Tangled's "I See the Light" by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, and sung by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi; Winnie the Pooh's "So Long" by Zooey Deschanel, and sung by Deschanel and M. Ward; Footloose's "Where the River Goes" by Zac Brown, Wyatt Durrette, Drew Pearson, and Anne Preven, and sung by Brown; and another Diane Warren ditty, Burlesque's "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me," sung by Cher. It isn't often that we mention the Grammys here at Dread Central, but a few genre favorites have landed nominations for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, which will be presented February 12, 2012, on CBS, and we just wanted to share the news.
In the category of Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, True Blood: Volume 3 (by various artists) can be found; and in the category of Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, we have The Shrine (Ryan Shore, composer) and Black Swan (Clint Mansell, composer).
Black Swan isn't really a surprise (although wasn't that last year?), but to see a small indie like Jon Knautz's The Shrine (review here) receive this kind of recognition is pretty extraordinary.
Congrats to all the nominees, and for the full list be sure to click the Grammy link below.

Hey, the Oscars aren't the only awards show in town for movie lovers. Granted, it's the biggest and glitziest, but if you're a movie fan looking to keep track of which films are winning what, the Grammys are on the way, and they've announced their nominations for the 54th awards ceremony. Soundtrack/score hounds will be pleased. Granted, we're not sure at all how the eligibility process works and why movies as old as "Tangled" and as recent as "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2" can run against each other, but whatever. Anyway, while byzantine Academy rules kept Clint Mansell's "Black Swan" out of contention last year, it can compete here, facing two entries from Alexandre Desplat ('Deathly Hallows' and the Oscar nominated "The King's Speech"), Daft Punk's "Tron: Legacy" and, suprisingly, Ryan Shore's score for genre flick "The Shrine" (yeah, we never heard of it...

In the past ten years MODERNCINÉ has been dedicated to making high-quality, groundbreaking and edgy horror films avoiding clichés and complacency in favor of original ideas and memorable performances. Founded by Andrew van den Houten during his college years, Andrew began producing and directing a number of award-winning short films including the 2005 multiple award winning Headspace, MODERNCINÉ's first full-length feature. Headspace began a winning streak for Van den Houten producing Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door and Home Movie (directed by Christopher Denham [1]) which received favorable reviews at Montreal's [2] 2008 Fantasia Film Festival [3]. Recently Sound On Sight had a chance to catch up with Andrew and discuss his recent release, Offspring. 1- Offspring is your debut feature. Aside from the practical challenges, how was working on a feature different than a short, in terms of creative challenges? - I have made six features and Offspring was my fifth. Working on...

Composer Ryan Shore is one of the rising stars of the film music world. Thanks to his collaborations with MovieScoreMedia, more and more of his scores are now available to the public. Headspace, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the Macedonian movie Senki (Shadows) are just a number of titles available from their catalogue. In the summer, Msm released a three-way collection of jazzy scores from Ryan's career: Numb, Kettle of Fish and Coney Island Baby are just pure fun to listen to. Now a new collection is available, collecting together a wide range of short film scores from Ryan's earlier days. The award winning animated shorts include the much-requested Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher, the Claymation short Shadowplay and the dark comedy Cadaverous. What connects together these scores apart from being written by the same composer is that you'd never think they were written for short films - they could underscore...
