The breakout star of Love Lies Bleeding, Katy O’Brian, is also seeing her fair share of franchise roles. Prior to her latest A24 movie, O’Brian has played parts in projects for Disney like The Mandalorian and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She will also be seen in the upcoming Twisters, where she says, “We filmed a tornado movie during tornado season in Tornado Alley.” She would reveal that her character is “a little sillier” than she has been used to, but she won’t go as far as to call it a comic relief role. “I don’t want to say comedic role, and then everyone’s like, ‘She wasn’t funny.’ We’ll say it’s silly and fun.”

As last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (which has dropped the “Part One” subtitle since it hit home video) wrapped up, we saw that Tom Cruise’s Imf agent lead character Ethan Hunt would live to run another day – and pictures from the set of Mission: Impossible 8 (which won’t be called Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two after all) show him doing just that! Cruise running is a big part of these movies and his overall career, so it’s nice to see that Mission: Impossible 8 will indeed have him moving across the screen as fast as his legs can carry him. There’s even some video from the set as well, if you want to see this run in action.

Deathstroke is one of the most fearsome comic book villains with an equally riveting and emotional story arc. The character has also made several live-action appearances, mostly notably in the Arrowverse and Justice League. Deathstroke was also the main villain in the second season of DC’s Titans.
Deathstroke in a still from Titans (2018–2023)
While Deathstroke is known for being one of Teen Titans’ most revered villains, the live-action series failed to do justice to his comic arc. In the comics, Deathstroke’s hatred for the team of superheroes is much more deeply rooted and emotional but the Titans squandered the potential of what could have been a compelling storyline for television.

Five years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount is backtracking from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

Amid last week’s fervor of her This Is Me… Now album release, Amazon Prime Video debut and press tour — as well as being named a chair of the 2024 Met Gala — Jennifer Lopez made a pit stop in Dubai for a surprise performance at the opening of the One&Only One Za’abeel Hotel.
Alongside Mark Ronson, who was DJing the lavish 400-person fete celebrating the luxury hotel group’s first vertical urban resort, Lopez, in a sequin jumpsuit and hooded fur-coat, popped-up in the DJ booth, taking the audience through a medley of her songs including “Jenny From the Block,” “Get Right” and the new “Can’t Get Enough.” This was a first-time collaboration for Lopez and Ronson (the Oscar- nominated producer of the Barbie soundtrack). Idris Elba followed with a DJ set into the early morning hours.

The news of Tom Cruise setting a “strategic partnership” with Warner Bros. has certain “Top Gun” fans barrel-rolling out of control. Don’t panic, put on your oxygen mask before you attempt to help others — and definitely don’t jump without a chute, because a third “Top Gun” has been in development for a while now, a source told IndieWire.

Tom Cruise can be a divisive figure; we here at JoBlo love the guy but he definitely has his critics, primarily those who hit at his personal life and dealings in Scientology. But if you take a look at any one of his insane stunts – or listen to his tirade against slip-ups during the Covid-19 pandemic that shut down production on Dead Reckoning – you’ll know this guy is the real deal when it comes to making movies. And if you have anything bad to say about the guy’s work ethic, you’ll have to answer to M:i co-star Hannah Waddingham.
Hannah Waddingham, who co-stars in 2025’s sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – which has yet to be officially named, but we feel like the fates might align on this one… – suggested that her views on Tom Cruise changed while working with him on the eighth installment of the M:i franchise.

With all the talk of super-hero fatigue, it’s interesting to note that we never talk about espionage fatigue despite the steady stream of spies from a variety of franchises. One of the oldest and long-running series is, of course, Mission: Impossible. Once a lauded television series, it transitioned to film in 1996 and somehow, 27 years later, it’s still chugging along, in some ways invigorated with new life.
Led by the once-ageless Tom Cruise, he remains the fittest sixty-something actor in the world, continuing to do his own stunts and working with his personal guru Christopher McQuarrie, who returned for the newest offering, Dead-Reckoning Part One, out now from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The filming was originally intended to shoot back-to-back with the film’s released a year apart. Then came Covid-19 and now the Sga strike so those plans got scuttled. That said, their threat, Artificial Intelligence, has proven increasingly timely with every passing month.

You weren’t alone in getting creeped out by the AI villain of this summer’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” President Joe Biden was freaked too.
After the president watched the movie, he grew deeply troubled, according to White House chief of staff Bruce Reed, who spoke to The Associated Press.
“If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about,” said Reed, who watched the film with the president.
On Monday, Biden signed an executive order on artificial intelligence, meant to “balance the needs of cutting-edge technology companies with national security and consumer rights, creating an early set of guardrails that could be fortified by legislation and global agreements” (according to the AP).

The mission will remain impossible to see for another year. The eighth “Mission: Impossible” film in the Tom Cruise action series, which is dropping the previously announced “Dead Reckoning Part Two” from its title, has been delayed from 2024 to 2025, as part of a sweeping shift in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming release schedule.
The direct follow-up to this July’s “Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Part Two” was initially scheduled to premiere June 28, 2024, just 11 months after its direct predecessor’s release. It will now be released May 23, 2025, almost a full year after its initial date.
The “Mission: Impossible” sequel faces the most significant delay, but it’s not the only big ticket item on Paramount’s slate to get majorly pushed back. The film takes the release date previously held by a fourth feature film spinoff of the “Spongebob Squarepants” Nickelodeon animated series. That currently untitled project will now premiere seven months later,...

“Don’t be such a dreamer,” says Bob (Esai Morales) to his younger brother, to which soon-to-be teen star Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips), né Richard Valenzuela, quickly retorts, “My dreams are pure rock ‘n’ roll.” It’s the kind of blunt, overearnest exchange found in countless music-based biopics, but it also exemplifies La Bamba’s penchant for the cartoonishly archetypal. Indeed, everyone surrounding Ritchie is stripped of both nuance and agency as their roles in the film rarely extend beyond fueling or antagonizing the future icon.
Ritchie’s girlfriend, Donna (Danielle von Zerneck), the namesake of one of his biggest hits, is little more than a poodle skirt and a cheery smile, while his doting mother, Connie (Rosanna DeSoto), is the quintessential ultra-supportive parent. Bob is certainly the most fully fleshed out of this trio, but even most of his personal ups and downs are presented as being directly...

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One is an action movie directed by Christopher McQuarrie starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames,, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Vanessa Kirby among others.
A saga that does not disappoint and manages to surpass itself in this new chapter in what it promises and has been its unmistakable hallmark: action and entertainment.
More of the same? Absolutely.
And we loved and enjoyed this new installment of “Mission: Impossible”.

In a surprise to basically no one, Tom Cruise rides a motorbike off a cliff in the summer blockbuster “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” which was released in theaters this summer after three years of stop-and-start production and is now beginning its life on home video. The action superstar insists on doing his own stunt work, and has been talking about it since 1996, the year the first “Mission: Impossible” movie came out. In each successive movie, the stunts have gotten more intense: hanging off the tallest building in the world, attaching himself to the outside of an airplane while it takes off and flying his own helicopter through a treacherous mountain range.
But trying to quantify the cost to insure the action star can be a Hollywood Mission Impossible.

While the writers are back at developing projects, film and TV productions have not yet returned in full swing with the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, still on strike. There are a few projects that have been given the go-ahead to start principle photography during this time with a waiver from SAG-AFTRA. This includes a Kevin Smith film titled The 4:30 Movie, as well as some projects from M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana, Sam Raimi and Mel Gibson. According to Deadline, a western starring Ron Pearlman and Esai Morales titled, Cottonmouth, has also started production in Oklahoma with a waiver.
The film stars an ensemble featuring actors Martin Sensmeier, from Westworld, Ron Perlman known for Hellboy, Esai Morales, who can recently be seen in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Eric Nelsen, seen in Paramount+’s 1883, Jonathan Sadowski from Chernobyl Diaries, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, who can be seen in Peter Pan & Wendy, James Landry Hébert,...

Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

AI - i.e. artificial intelligence - is everywhere right now. On TikTok, I often come across AI covers sung by digital imitations of other artists. My friends who are teachers say that they know students are turning in AI-generated work. And AI-generated images seem to go viral all the time; that image of the Pope wearing a giant white puffer still makes me laugh, even if I know there's something not quite right there. As a writer, I'm constantly thinking about the threat AI poses to what I do, too.
Somewhat serendipitously - seeing as these projects have been in the works for literally years - it's also been a big year for fictional AI onscreen. This summer, "Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1" featured Tom Cruise's borderline superhuman Ethan Hunt facing off against a literal AI. The Mission Impossible film series has to be one of the most exciting experiences ever, as it represents the very core of why the world loves Tom Cruise, and that is because he is batshit crazy, and goes out of his way to try and kill himself with more and more dangerous stunts just to make the audience happy. After nearly thirty years Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible film series are still going strong and now it seems that this new Mi film is the beginning of the end, as it is rumored that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the first part of a two-part finale that will end the Mission Impossible film series.

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro announced on Monday that he has nominated 27 films for potential addition to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, all of which feature Latino filmmakers, culture and history.
“Given the film industry’s continued exclusion of Latinos, we must make a special effort to ensure that Latino Americans’ contributions to American filmmaking are appropriately celebrated and included in the National Film Registry,” Rep. Castro wrote in his nomination letter. “The continued exclusion of Latinos in the film industry affects Latinos seeking opportunities in the industry and shapes how Latinos are perceived, stereotyped, and misunderstood in American life.”
Among the films nominated by Castro are “Frida” the 2002 biopic of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo that earned Salma Hayek an Oscar nomination. Other Oscar nominated performances, such as Catalina Sandino Moreno and Demián Bichir in the immigration dramas “Maria Full of Grace” and “A Better Life,” were also included.

Jarhead 2: Field of Fire feels like a parody of sorts initially. The opening monologue has a lot of profanity, which you wouldn’t usually hear in the kind of war movies that go to the Oscars. Given that it was released directly on VOD, it is understandable that this one wouldn’t have the seriousness or technical brilliance of Jarhead (2005), which was directed by none other than Sam Mendes, or that of any other iconic war movie like Saving Private Ryan (1998).
However, as it moves forward, the movie takes itself seriously and actually makes it a point to tell a story that has merit. The tonal shift is sort of abrupt, but there is plenty of action, and the story is quite easy to grasp. With its arrival, Jarhead 2 has received a new surge in popularity, which is understandable. I wouldn’t call it a good movie, but I...

The power of a single vote was on full display yesterday in Nashville, where actor and stuntman Bill “Bilbro” Yarbrough defeated his nearest rival by a single vote to win a seat on the guild’s national board of directors.
The voting there also shows the power of apathy, with only 213 (15%) of the Nashville local’s 1,422 eligible members casting ballots. Yarbrough defeated Bob Bailey, his nearest rival, by a vote of 78 to 77. A third candidate, Evans Donnell, received 56 votes.
Yarbrough is now the first candidate elected to the national board as part of the dissident faction led by Maya Gilbert-Dunbar, who’s running against incumbent president Fran Drescher. Peter Antico, Gilbert-Dunbar’s running mate, is squaring off against incumbent secretary-treasurer Joely Fisher.

Business-wise, "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" may have been a slight victim of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, but that didn't mean that Christopher McQuarrie's third entry in the franchise wasn't another stellar piece of blockbuster entertainment from what is easily the greatest Hollywood franchise going.
Paramount Pictures made the weird decision of opening "Dead Reckoning" just one week before all the premium screens were swallowed up by "Oppenheimer." However, for those of us who did see it on those screens (I actually saw it four times), it blew us away with its impeccable craft, breathless action, and fun, twisty, timely tale of artificial intelligence. In fact, it currently sits atop my list as the best film of 2023 so far, and when the lights went up in the theater after the film ended, I wanted to watch "Dead Reckoning Part Two" immediately.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” director Christopher McQuarrie revealed before the film opened in theaters that he rejected de-aging Tom Cruise for a 1989-set opening scene. Now on a new episode of “The Empire Spoiler Special Film Podcast” (via /Film), the filmmaker dropped that he considered reaching out to Julia Roberts to de-age her as well for the scene that never happened as planned.
The scene that made it into the film is a brief flashback that is interspersed throughout the movie. It depicts a young Ethan Hunt (Cruise) watching the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales) murder his girlfriend, played by Mariela Garriga. McQuarrie looked into de-aging VFX in order to open the film with a more extended scene set around this fateful encounter.

A de-aged Tom Cruise wasn’t the only idea scrapped for “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Christopher McQuarrie, director of this seventh film in the franchise, recently spoke on an Empire Spoiler Special podcast episode (via Slash Film) about how he considered featuring a de-aged Julia Roberts as Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) ill-fated lover in a sequence that would’ve taken place circa 1989. McQuarrie previously told Total Film why he scrapped the sequence altogether, feeling “too distracted by how an actor that I had known for however long was now suddenly this young person.”
Now, as he told Empire, Roberts was part of that sequence in a role eventually played by Mariela Garriga in flashback. "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" does something no other "Mission: Impossible" movie has ever done before: It shows us a quick glimpse into what Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise)'s life was like before he joined the Impossible Mission Force (Imf). As seen in the movie, that peek into Ethan's past takes the form of some brief black and white flashbacks revealing how Esai Morales' antagonist character, Gabriel, shares a history with Ethan. We learn Gabriel murdered a brunette woman named Marie and seemingly framed Ethan for her death, presumably leading to Ethan being presented with a choice: Go to prison, or put his skills to use for the U.S. government.
In the final cut of the movie, Marie is played by an actress named Mariela Garriga. But according to "Dead Reckoning" director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie, he originally considered casting a superstar in that part: Julia Roberts.

The tense, globetrotting adventure in "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" makes way for, um, interesting antagonists, including an AI known as The Entity, who is hell-bent on world domination. The Entity hides behind its machinating circuitry and lines of code but sends two humans after Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team: the mysterious Gabriel (Esai Morales) and his unpredictable assassin partner, Paris (Pom Klementieff).
Klementieff stands out in a film that is already packed to the brim with excesses, thanks to smart, eye-catching costume design and a mostly silent presence that makes her more deadly than Gabriel himself. Paris seems a bit unhinged from the get-go,...

[Editor’s note: The following interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023.]
Rebecca Ferguson is ready for a break. She’s finished her A.D.R. (additional dialogue) on “Dune: Part Two,” the promotion chores on “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” (her third in the series), and is on her way home to hang with her 16-year-old son and still-friendly first husband in Sweden.
She was prepared to go back to England’s Hoddesdon Studios to shoot the second season of “Silo,” the most popular series on AppleTV+, returning her to the lead role of Sheriff. Not necessary, as the day after we spoke, July 13, SAG-AFTRA announced they were going on strike. “The percentage of people fortunate enough to have a good life as actors have to fight for the other percentage,” she said on the phone.
The 39-year-old actress, who grew up in Stockholm, attended a bilingual English school, and trained as a dancer, has steadily built herself into a major star.

[The following story contains spoilers from Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.]
In Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise and his Impossible Missions Force face off against an all-powerful rogue form of artificial intelligence, known as The Entity, which has the ability to manipulate people, weapons and various defense systems.
In the film, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his team of Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg), Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and newcomer Grace (Hayley Atwell) try to keep The Entity from falling into the wrong hands, going after various power brokers who want to acquire and control this dangerous technology.
And Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters at a time of great concern about the real-world threat posed by AI, including in Hollywood, where restrictions around what the technology can and cannot be used for in film and TV are at the heart of ongoing labor disputes between striking writers and actors and the studios and streamers.

Pom Klementieff’s assassin Paris is largely mute throughout the latest instalment of the franchise, flying in the face of more enlightened recent film roles
There are many things wrong with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One: its ridiculous storyline about AI, its bloated runtime, the plot holes as wide as Tom Cruise’s gleaming megawatt smile, but the most jarring of all? How Pom Klementieff’s supporting role as Paris, a savage assassin, is transformed into the tired stereotype of the silent Asian, who is largely mute throughout the film.
Paris is part of villain Gabriel’s (Esai Morales) crew. She’s on screen for many of the fights and action sequences including a thrilling car chase through the streets of Rome. All kamikaze glee and thigh-crushing aggression, she’s more than capable of giving Cruise’s Impossible Mission Force agent, Ethan Hunt, a run for his money. But the French actor,...
