Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 16 finale.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” just crowned America’s latest drag superstar.
The sickening Season 16 finale followed as all of this year’s competing queens returned to watch Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál compete for the coveted title — with Wind coming out as the winner following a dazzling lip-synch for the crown to Kylie Minogue’s hit single “Padam.” This win marks the second time an Asian drag queen has won the competition series.
Wind walked away with a one-year supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills Cosmetics and cash prize of $200,000. The runner-up did not leave the floor empty-handed, walking away with a $25,000 cash tip. Jane, a polarizing competitor who was both loved and labeled a villain this season, landed in third place and left with another $25,000 prize.

Pee-wee’s Playhouse was the culmination of a character created back in the 70s by the multi-talented Paul Reubens. Reubens had joined the comedy group the Groundlings in the 70s. The Groundlings was the jumping-off point for several famous comedians and icons. This would include Phil Hartman, Lisa Kudrow, Cassandra Peterson, Craig T. Nelson, a who’s who list of SNL Alumni, Conan O’Brien, JJ Abrams, and well…just a lot of people.
A number of the troupe who were there when Reubens was a part of the Groundlings would wind up as part of not only Pee-wee’s Playhouse but also other Pee-wee projects. I mean…who can forget Cassandra Peterson, Aka Elvira, as the biker gang badass chick who wanted a go at Pee Wee first?
From his time creating the character at The Groundlings, Reubens had a go for Saturday Night Live which didn’t happen. After this, he...

There’s only one thing that comes to mind when you think of Elvira: franchise! And that’s exactly what Cassandra Peterson – portrayer of everyone’s favorite horror hostess – wanted following the release of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, aiming to have the sort of success of Ernest P. Worrell. Knowwhatimean, Uncle Vinnie?
Unfortunately for Cassandra Peterson, she ran into some serious issues with a sequel to 1988’s Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (which was a box office bomb anyway) when the planned studio, Carolco Pictures, went bankrupt. But Peterson had plenty in the arsenal. As she told Dread Central, “I had a ton of [ideas] that were so awesome. I had this one called Elvira Goes to Hell, and it was like a buddy picture, and I really liked that one. It was really funny. It revolved around Halloween a little bit more and I would’ve gone more...

Happy Halloween! As a Halloween treat for Daily Dead readers, I caught up with Cassandra Peterson to discuss Halloween traditions, growing pumpkins, upcoming projects, and much more:
I saw on Instagram that you’re growing your own pumpkins this year. How has that been going?
I am! It's fantastic and we're going to cut them today before we leave. They all finally turned orange. It's the first time I ever grew pumpkins and all I have to say to anybody who wants to grow them is, "You better have a damn big spot to put them in," because my God, they're like monsters that take over the whole world!
Yeah, it looks like you have this huge area in your yard now dedicated to pumpkins.
Isn't it crazy? I just bought this little pumpkin plant. It was like four inches tall a couple months ago at a farmers' market, and I thought,...

It’s always fun to see some of our horror heroes appear outside of their given role as it were. We’ve seen Stephen King appear in tons of his story’s adaptations, but he also showed up in things not associated with him like Sons of Anarchy. Sure, you get athletes that try acting, some that are even successful, but how about our beloved horror hosts? Many of them only stayed on the critique end of the movie spectrum but a couple have made the jump. Joe Bob Briggs appeared in a segment of the recent Scare Package as well as a deleted scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 but never got the spotlight in his own feature length film.

While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.
If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.
While there’s an inherent connection to horror in the various mutants and monsters that pop up throughout the franchise, no rendition embraces the genre nearly as much as this one. In addition to references to classics like Alien, Friday the 13th, and The Evil Dead, the series employed several notable horror actors throughout its 124-episode run.

The comedic vampiric personality Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, played by Cassandra Peterson was among the many who mourned the death of comedian Paul Reubens, known as the quirky Pee-wee Herman.
And while tributes poured out for Reubens, Peterson once shared that he was her best friend because they understood one another and came from a similar comedy background.

Forget the pleasantries, today sucks. Paul Reubens, best known for his incomparable work as Pee-wee Herman, has passed away. The weird, wacky, and wonderful comedy figure is one of the most influential creatives ever to do it, and left in his wake is an irreplaceable void of silly, absurdist joy. Reubens' created the character of Pee-wee Herman while performing with The Groundlings, the legendary improvisational comedy troupe boasting alumni like Laraine Newman, Pat Morita, Craig T. Nelson, Jon Lovitz, Adrienne Barbeau, Conan O'Brien, Phil Hartman, Phil Lamarr, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Coolidge, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Will Forte, Annie Mumolo, Kaitlin Olson, Edi Patterson, Tony Cavalero, and a ridiculous number of other eventual "Saturday Night Live" players.

We spent July discussing gender in a myriad of ways: cross-dressing serial killers in Insidious: Chapter 2 and Psycho, as well as trans representation in Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. To keep things in theme, we’re closing out the month with a look at Joshua Grannel‘s (aka drag queen Peaches Christ‘s) 2010 horror comedy All About Evil, which is currently streaming on Shudder!
All About Evil sees an unhinged theatre owner named Deborah (Natasha Lyonne) begin making snuff films and screening them at her decrepit San Francisco theater — presenting them as fictional works — in order to prevent the theater from going bankrupt. Unfortunately for Deborah, her biggest fan (Thomas Dekker) catches on to her scheme and tries to stop her before her antics get his mother (Cassandra Peterson) killed.

In our previous article, we spotlighted male actors over 70 who continue to captivate young audiences. This time around, we’re shifting focus to their female counterparts who are 70 years and above.
Several actresses who have crossed the septuagenarian threshold have garnered exceptional demand within the first five months of 2023, a feat achieved by less than 0.04% of talent in the American market. Topping this list is the most popular TV Wonder Woman and Miss World USA 1972, Lynda Carter. The surge in popularity of the “Wonder Woman” franchise’s recent renditions has also played a crucial role in renewing interest in her.
Following Carter there’s Morgan Fairchild, renowned for her portrayal of poised, determined women in soap operas like “Dallas” (1978); Cassandra Peterson, best recognized as Elvira from sketch comedies and horror films; and Jane Fonda, who’s also known for her activism. These three actresses all boasted demand levels over 38 times the average during this period.

Brad Pitt just unloaded one of his real estate properties. While Hollywood’s elite is known for buying and selling properties, there is apparently something special about the house Pitt just sold. Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, insists the property is haunted. She would know, too. She lived there before.
Cassandra ‘Elvira’ Peterson says she sold her haunted house to Brad Pitt
Peterson owned Brad Pitt’s Los Feliz home in the 1990s. In fact, she’s the one who sold him the house. In a sitdown chat with People, Peterson recalled her interactions with Brad Pitt during the real estate transaction and what she disclosed to him before he signed on the dotted line. The famed scream queen recalled warning Pitt about supernatural activity in the home. She wanted to ensure Brad Pitt knew he was buying a haunted house before he purchased the property.

Brad Pitt is trading houses with Aileen Getty. The month after Et exclusively reported that Pitt sold his Los Feliz, California, home in an off-market deal, Et confirms that the 65-year-old oil heiress was the purchaser of the property.
Not only that, but now Et has learned that, after selling his house, Pitt, 59, has purchased Getty’s property in the same area for $5.5 million.
Getty paid $33 million for Pitt’s more than 2-acre compound that features multiple parcels of land with five homes, according to Dirt. The actor purchased the property’s main house from Cassandra Peterson for $1.7 million in 1994.
Pitt once shared the home with his ex, Angelina Jolie, and their six children: Maddox, 21, Pax, 19, Zahara, 18, Shiloh, 16, Vivienne, 14, and Knox, 14.
As for Getty, when she sold her home, she made over $1 million in the deal, as she purchased the property from Maroon 5’s James Valentine for $4.1 in 2019, the outlet reports.

Los Angeles, April 8 (Ians) Hollywood star Brad Pitt allowed an elderly neighbour to live rent-free in his Los Angeles mansion.
The 59-year-old ‘Fight Club’ star purchased his home in the Los Feliz area back in 1994 for reportedly $1.7 million and he started snapping up neighbouring properties whenever they came up for sale so he could build a large estate – but after buying one house belonging to a widower named John in his early 90s, Brad struck a deal to allow the man to stay in the house rent-free until his death aged 105, reports aceshowbiz.com.
The story was revealed by ‘Elvira: Mistress of the Dark’ star Cassandra Peterson who sold the original home to Brad. “I think there were like 22 houses that were contiguous to the edge of the property. And every time they came up he bought one,” she told people.com.
“He was very, very kind to the husband.

“I think there were like 22 houses houses that were contiguous to the edge of the property. And every time they came up he bought one,” she said, explaining that the old man, who was in his early 90s at the time, owned one of those houses.

It’s a tale as old as time and right out of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood“: An iconic actress living next door to an A-lister, who turns out to be none other than Oscar winner Brad Pitt.
Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira Mistress of the Dark, revealed that she sold her “haunted” Los Feliz mansion to Pitt, and lived next door to him for years. The neighborly proximity also led Peterson to seeing Pitt training for 1999 film “Fight Club” in his garage.
“One time I was walking down the street looking like a hag because I’d just gotten out of the shower. I was in a rush to get somewhere, so I ran my dogs down the street for a quick walk, and I go past Brad’s garage and he’s in there wearing only sweatpants and punching,” Peterson told People magazine. “He’s doing a punching bag.

For those that don’t follow real estate, one of the biggest stories on the Hollywood front is that Brad Pitt recently sold his Los Angeles home for about $40 million. That’s a hell of a haul considering he bought it for $1.7 million. Oh, and this abode that Brad Pitt purchased in the mid-’90s was actually a haunted house sold to him by none other than Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
Elvira told People she did her due diligence of letting Pitt know that he wasn’t purchasing any ordinary home. “We were just kind of warning him that a lot of weird things have been going on there in the house since we moved in…And he was very excited about that. He thought that was really cool…So we were telling Brad all about that and he loved it. I mean, there are not many buyers who...

Cassandra Peterson’s role as Elvira is her most famous. However, she began her career in the entertainment industry long before she became Elvira. Peterson began acting in 1970 when she was only 19. Peterson’s career flourished from a Las Vegas showgirl to one of the most famous characters in the horror industry. When Cassandra Peterson began working on Elvira’s Movie Macabre, the program was local. The movies shown on the program were all horror movies, but they were not the biggest movies in the film industry. Despite being a local show, Peterson’s Elvira gained so much fame so quickly that...

“I know you are, but what am I?” With those words, Paul Reubens’ Pee-wee Herman became one of the biggest pop culture sensations of the 1980s, spawning several TV series, toys, movies, and so much more before controversy spelled the temporary end of the character. After a stage show and HBO special, Pee-wee Herman broke into the mainstream with the now classic 1985 film, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. The feature directorial debut of Tim Burton, the film put the young director on the map, allowing him to go on to make Beetlejuice and 1989’s Batman, plus it also established Oingo Boingo frontman Danny Elfman as one of the most talented young composers in Hollywood.

Friends and family of actor/writer/director John Paragon paid tribute to him earlier this week, laying him to rest at Hollywood Forever in a unique urn that memorializes his character from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Jambi the Genie.
The purple and gold box containing his remains is a recreation of a similar Jambi box seen on the television show. It can be found at Abbey-Haven of Devotion, E-2 East wall, Niche D-3 at the cemetery, where many celebrities and Hollywood executives are interred.
Paragon died on April 3, 2021 at age 67 of heart disease complications. His ashes were stored by actress Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira), who came up with the idea for the Jambi box with actor Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman). A fundraiser on GoFundMe raised more than 14K toward the memorial celebration.

Even from the first few minutes of "Diamonds Are Forever," it's pretty clear that the writing is a little different than past James Bond films. The introduction races along at a breakneck pace with a new one-two-punch dynamism. Sure, it's no "this never happened to the other fellow," a top-tier opening gag from George Lazenby's stint as Bond, but the beginning of "Diamonds Are Forever" is full of promise.
Unfortunately, by the time that body doubles and murderous duos get thrown into the mix, the movie starts to fall apart — there's a reason that "Diamonds Are Forever" ranked #20 out of 24 in our list of Bond films. Nevertheless, the movie's writing keeps a spunky attitude, constantly cracking jokes and unapologetically tossing in ridiculous elements. As it turns out, there might be a good explanation for the unique writing style: the producers made it a point to hire a screenwriter that would let Vegas shine.

Her name’s Elvira, but you can call her tonight–or Cassandra Peterson, her real name. Peterson, who gained popularity as the busty, double entendre-spitting Elvira, has revealed that there may be life for the character, even after she retires.
In a new interview with Variety, Peterson said, “I think I will retire, but I do not think that Elvira will ever retire. Elvira can completely go on without me even if I die, which I will at some point, I think the character will continue to be around. I think it can kind of be like Santa Claus is to Christmas.”
However, Cassandra Peterson isn’t so sure somebody could physically play Elvira for longer than a short stint. “If I did a biopic or, say, a Broadway production. I think somebody else could definitely play me. But I don’t think that they would permanently become Elvira. Unfortunately,...

“I really see my young generation taking more control of themselves in the industry — whether it’s learning to write sooner, direct sooner, or produce sooner,” Ortega said. “I think it’s really empowering and important because, right now, teenage voices are still being told in the majority by older white males.”
The “X” star continued, “The more that happens, we’ll acknowledge that girls are much more than a lame stereotype.”
Ortega has been certified as a scream queen in her own right as the newest “Scream” final girl to appear in two installments with upcoming “Scream 6” ahead.

From the carefully considered outline of a Final Girl to the intoxicating nebulousness of the Scream Queen moniker, women are the bloody, brooding, beating heart of the horror genre.
On screen and off, women have long proved an essential linchpin to the success of scary movies. Actresses have served as horror’s marquee-topping centerpieces since even before Elsa Lanchester became Universal’s “Bride of Frankenstein” in 1935, and the subjects of many women’s fears — abuse, stalking, subjection, birth, motherhood, the patriarchy, etc. — have inspired the works of countless creepy classics directed by men: take Brian de Palma’s “Carrie” or Dario Argento’s “Suspiria,” just for starters.
And yet, it’s only been in the last few decades that women have more fully and frequently taken over telling their own nightmares: writing, directing, and producing contemporary masterpieces such as Mary Harron’s “American Psycho,” Karyn Kusama’s “Jennifer’s Body,” Julia Ducournau’s “Raw,...

Cassandra Peterson has been Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, for almost half a century, but this October marks her one-year anniversary of becoming an official queer icon. Peterson came out in her memoir “Yours Cruelly,” which is now available in paperback. At age 71, Peterson has rung in 40 years as Elvira, but is hanging up the black wig and slinky dress for now.
“I can go everywhere as myself now, I don’t have to dress up as Elvira. I can do conventions, show appearances, as myself. I think my autobiography is what changed that,” Peterson told IndieWire when asked about separating herself from her iconic character. “And I can go everywhere with my partner and we don’t have to pretend she’s my assistant. It’s fantastic for me and especially for her.”
The vampy B-movie scream queen has been selective with her Elvira appearances, including 2014’s “13 Nights of...

Welcome to IndieWire’s Seven Days of Scream Queens! October is flying by faster than Mary Sanderson on a vacuum cleaner, so we’re taking a batty beat to honor the impact women and queer people have had on the horror genre since its inception.
“Scream queen” is a maddeningly nebulous term with simple enough origins. The phrase was popularized among casting directors after the iconic performance of Fay Wray in 1933’s “King Kong” and would be used for decades to describe genre actresses from Janet Leigh in 1960’s “Psycho” to her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in 1978’s “Halloween” and beyond. These days it’s tossed around with some frequency, used interchangeably — and incorrectly — with the term “final girl”: the last character (most often played by women but they can be of any gender expression!) alive in a slasher movie.
Scream queens, it seems to us, are more than that.

Starting in fall 1964, children across America could watch CBS’ The Munsters but come January 1966, they seemingly all flipped the dial to ABC and Batman. The superhero series’ smash ratings cast a death spell on the humorous take on the classic monsters, with the exaggerated look as perfected by Universal’s horror films of the 1930s. Fred Gwynne was a delight as Herman Munster, paired nicely with Yvonne DeCarlo and Al Lewis. The sitcom transferred traditional family drama tropes to the residents of 1313 Mockingbird Lane and for 70 episodes, it was tremendous fun, revived for wildly successful syndication.
Ever since, there have been revivals in feature films, animated series, and failed attempts at series revivals. Now, here comes director Rob Zombie with his take on the classic characters, largely retaining the look of the original series, but in garish color.

Whether it rises above its abysmal first look, "The Munsters" at least feels born out of sincerity. Director Rob Zombie ("The Devil's Rejects") is quite possibly the biggest "Munsters" fan. Even his song "Dragula" is based on the outlandish family vehicle, so despite the violent idiosyncrasies of his earlier work, Zombie oddly feels like the right person to both pay tribute to the '60s sitcom, while making it feel fresh for another generation.
While the "House of 1000 Corpses" filmmaker is the headliner, "The Munsters" features a pretty awesome cast with Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, Daniel Roebuck, Jorge Garcia, RIchard Brake, and Cassandra Peterson, most of whom are Zombie alumni in some way or another. Of everyone involved, however, Phillips has one of the most difficult shoes to fill.
Al Lewis, Butch Patrick, and Yvonne De Carlo all had to act through a bunch of makeup in the original CBS series,...
