A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

Amid new scrutiny on child performers in the wake of the Quiet on Set docuseries, former Disney actress Christy Carlson Romano is opening up about the moments when she and her mother had to speak up on the set of Disney show Even Stevens, which Romano starred in as a teen.
In a conversation on Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast, which also included Bialik’s fellow Blossom alum Jenna von Oÿ, Bialik asked the former child stars about times in which they had to assert themselves during production and what “worked well” in managing to be heard.
Romano noted that there were a couple of times when she was able to have a say in the production choices. One was when writers would come to her to draw from her own experiences while writing for her character, Ren. “They would be like, ‘Hey, you just turned 16. Are boys interesting to you?...

Former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano says she has not watched Investigation Discovery’s docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV and has not participated in similar ventures because the filmmakers are typically “outsiders” and “trauma tourists.”

McKenna Grace reprises her lead role as Phoebe in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which led the weekend box office with $45 million. At 17 she is not yet a household name, but she laid some groundwork early: At age six she had a supporting role on the Disney Channel sitcom “Crash & Bernstein.” Later she received an Emmy nomination for her work in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and portrayed the younger selves for the leads in movies like “I, Tonya” and “Captain Marvel.”
Her “Ghostbusters” co-star is Finn Wolfhard, who made his debut at 13 in CW’s “Supernatural” before starring in “Stranger Things” and “It.” Zendaya, star of “Dune: Part Two,” got her start as a Disney Channel regular. Her co-star, Oscar-nominated Austin Butler, cut his teeth at Nickelodeon.

There isn’t an ideal place for the public to discuss child abuse allegations, but for now, TikTok might be our best option. That’s a precarious position for young entertainers and their advocates to be in as the U.S. government once again moves to ban the social media platform.
On Sunday, March 17, ID Network’s “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” began its deep dive into the toxic workplace allegations and child abuse reports that emerged out of Nickelodeon following Dan Schneider’s ousting in 2018. Within hours of the docuseries’ premiere, dozens of press outlets and at-home viewers started posting TikTok supercuts of the most damning moments from the first two episodes.
Tagging “Quiet on Set,” Stephanie Matto from “90 Day Fiancé” even made a video discussing her personal experiences with Schneider and the competitive nature of TV parents at Nickelodeon from when she was a young actress.

To prove he wasn’t kidding, Mowry pulled out his phone and had his team send him a text. Once he remembered to take his phone off airplane mode, the classic beep did, indeed, come through. What other catchphrases from his past shows has the Smart Guy alum adopted? As he reveals in our video above, he frequently asks his Kim Possible co-star, Christy Carlson Romano, “what’s the sitch?” He also ...

Last fall, 21-year-old Harrie Baxter, a content creator and a then-university student in New Zealand, stumbled across Evie Magazine, a publication that markets itself as an “unbiased source of truth for women.” At first glance, Evie seemed to Baxter like a fairly typical Gen Z-targeted women’s website — Met Gala fashion slideshows, a definitive ranking of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour costumes, stories lauding the power of probiotics. It immediately took her back to being 13 or 14 and reading about “lip gloss, celebrity couples, things teenage girls love,” she tells Rolling Stone.

Can you imagine if "That's So Raven" starred anyone else as its lead other than Raven-Symoné? We can't, but according to series star Anneliese van der Pol, Disney Channel initially gave her former child-actor costar a supporting role in their show because of what she claims was racism from the network.
During an appearance on fellow Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano's "Vulnerable" podcast, van der Pol said that when the network was casting for her family sitcom (originally called "Absolutely Psychic"), Raven-Symoné wasn't the original lead, "she was the sidekick." At the time, the "That's So Raven" alum said Disney Channel was still looking for its main star, a role she auditioned for herself.
As it turns out, Disney Channel filled that role with another actor, with Raven-Symoné still on board as the "sidekick," but van der Pol noted, "When they filmed, they realized...

Twenty years ago, tween-girl cinema thrived. Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Amanda Bynes kicked off the junior rom-com eras -- bringing their Disney and Nickelodeon fans along for the ride. Big-screen coming-of-age stories, family sagas, and whimsical made-for-television movies defined youth culture in 2003. Pop music became more accessible to children. Bright colors and Y2K fashion arrived in full force. Kids were paying attention to the media and products advertised to them.
As a person who turned nine in '03, I vividly remember this era of family films. They were hopeful, playful, and rife with young characters seeking adventures. I'll never forget when my sister and I saw our first movies on DVD instead of VHS: "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" and "What a Girl Wants." For millennial fans, Hilary Duff's Italian excursion has been on repeat as a literal soundtrack of our lives. Amanda Bynes' British battle of the debutantes sharpened our rebellious side.

Alexa Nikolas opened up about her “traumatizing” time on Nickelodeon to former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano.
Nikolas, 30, starred on Nickelodeon’s hit show Zoey 101, which ended up running without Nikolas for four seasons, from 2005 to 2006.

Nikolas said knowing Britney’s traumatizing conservatorship and mental struggle, she doesn’t blame her.

Britney Spears has issued an apology to former child actor Alexa Nikolas after it was alleged that the star “yelled” at Nikolas on the set of Zoey 101.
Nikolas played Nicole Bristow in the first two seasons of the Nickelodeon series, alongside Spears’ younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears.
After the conclusion of season two in 2006, Nikolas left the programme after reports of several fights and disagreements with series star Jamie Lynn. It had previously emerged that Britney had, on one occasion, shouted at Nikolas on set on Jamie Lynn’s behalf.
Since then, Nikolas has been vocal about surviving mistreatment in the industry and founded a movement called Eat Predators, which seeks to call out alleged predators and networks.
In late October, Nikolas spoke about her experiences on the show on multiple podcasts, claiming that she was bullied on the set of Zoey 101 after lies were spread about her.

Being normal is vastly overrated, but re-watching the “Halloweentown” franchise each year certainly is not. Of course, there’s one question that always comes back on those rewatches: why wasn’t Kimberly J. Brown in all of them?
Brown starred as Marnie Piper (though she later embraced her name as a Cromwell witch) in the first three movies in the series. But, after “Halloweentown High,” Sara Paxton took over the role for “Halloweentown Returns,” without any kind of explanation from or preparation by Disney. The move draws outrage from fans to this day, as many millennials considered it a “betrayal.”
So why did it happen? Well, according to Brown herself, she was initially in talks for the fourth film. In a 2018 Q&a video, the actress explained that there were conversations, but she never really found out why they fell apart.
“The answer to that is I’m not really sure,...

“Peak TV” is ubiquitous these days, but pop culture may be approaching a new saturation point: Peak TV rewatch podcast.
The rapidly growing audio genre has skyrocketed in the past few years, with popular shows like “The Office,” “New Girl,” and many more dissected episode-by-episode in weekly podcasts hosted by the original shows’ stars. These podcasts are big business for companies like iHeart, where ad revenue is up, reportedly close to 80 percent, thanks to a perfect storm of nostalgia, exploration, and plain old love of TV.
Will Pearson, Chief Operating Officer of iHeart Podcasts, remembers being in multiple conversations about potential rewatch podcasts when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. It was one of the co-hosts of “Fake Doctors, Real Friends,” a “Scrubs” rewatch podcast, who suggested they kick this genre into high gear.
“It was Zach [Braff] that pointed it out,” Pearson told IndieWire via Zoom. “He was saying, ‘People are stuck at home.

High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale knows a thing or two about balance. The star posted a picture that showcased her sculpted abs and her love of pizza.
The actress wore black and white patterned pants with a matching top. She left the collared shirt unbuttoned, and the black tube top she wore underneath showed off her fit figure.
Ashley smiled as she bit into a slice of pizza.
She wore her brown hair in loose waves, and her minimal makeup showed her summer glow. Her tan only emphasized her toned midriff.
The second photo showed the star in a meditative pose with her legs crossed and palms facing up. Both images showed off the actress’s collection of minimalist tattoos.

Twenty years ago, “Kim Possible” creators Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle introduced the world to a high school cheerleader who saved the world in her spare time alongside her best friend Ron Stoppable and his naked mole rat, Rufus.
The series turned the damsel in distress trope on its head, putting a heroine on the small screen at a time when most of the world-saving characters we knew were men (and they still are). At the start of a video posted to her YouTube channel Tuesday, Romano begins, “Everybody always asks me this question, if we’re still in touch, if we’re still friends. To be honest, I don’t even really know if we were ever really friends, but we were co-workers.”

It’s a question that just about every actor faces after working on a beloved show with other beloved actors: “Do you still talk to them?” In Christy Carlson Romano’s case, that question is generally being asked about her former “Even Stevens” co-star, Shia Labeouf. And, in a new video, Romano is setting the record straight on why she’s not still in touch with him.
“To be honest, I don’t even really know if we were ever really friends,” Romano admitted to kick off the video. “But we were coworkers. We had this sort of, like, very good on-screen chemistry. People assumed that we were, in real life, brother and sister and that, in real life, I had an influence over what this guy did.”
Romano then went into detail about her first time meeting Labeouf, and what their relationship at the time of the Disney Channel show was actually like.
