Doctor Rachel Clarke and ex-junior doctors Jed Mercurio and Prasanna Puwanarajah have teamed up to make Covid drama Breathtaking, here’s the trailer.
It is perhaps no surprise that following the most tumultuous, traumatic time in our recent history, writers quickly opened Final Draft and began to try to make some sense of it all.
Jack Thorne’s astonishingly powerful film Help, which starred Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham, shone a light on the brutal reality or running a care home during the pandemic.
Michael Winterbottom and Keiron Quirke aimed their anger at the political side of things, with Kenneth Branagh playing Boris Johnson in mini series This England, while writer Stephen Knight and director Doug Liman took a more lighthearted approach with comedy drama Lockdown, which saw Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor stage a diamond heist in Harrods.

Bungling amateurs kidnap a morally bankrupt politico in this British film – but his wife won’t spring for him, and he’s enjoying the publicity
This pitch-black, low-budget British comedy entertainingly revolves around a sleazy, self-serving MP who may or may not bear a passing resemblance to a certain recent prime minister. The MP’s name is Richard “Hardline” Hardy (Patrick Baladi), a politician so morally bankrupt that when he is kidnapped by a pair of bungling amateurs, he spots a once-in-a-life opportunity for cut-through with the British public. “Four million hits!” he says as his eyes light up seeing his kidnap video rack up views on YouTube.
Hardy’s kidnappers are out-of-work actor Maggie (Kelly Wenham) and her boyfriend Brian (Jack Parry-Jones), a taxi driver studying coding in his spare time. The frankly implausible story of how and why they kidnap Hardy while he’s up north on an...

When FX announced late last month that its hit comedy series Breeders was ending, we didn't anticipate the trailer for the fourth and final season would have this much closure.
FX went public with the Breeders Season 4 trailer on Wednesday, and it's filled with bombshells about your favorite characters.
Before we get into the revelations, we should probably remind you that there's a five-year time jump by the time the series returns.
Paul and Ally are left blindsided when Luke reveals he's leaving the family home because his girlfriend is pregnant.
The teenager is ready to embrace the new chapter of his life away from the prying eyes of his family.
Ava reveals that she has feelings for her grandad's hairdresser, which leaves the family with many questions.
And it wouldn't be Breeders without some drama from Paul and Ally.

The Worsleys’ lives are about to be turned upside down when Breeders returns to FX for its fourth and final season.
In the dark comedy’s new trailer (the season premieres Monday, July 31 at 10/9c with its first two of 10 episodes), Paul and Ally’s offspring have some big announcements to make. Not only is Luke moving out of the family’s condo, but his girlfriend is pregnant! (Did we mention there’s a five-year time jump?) Meanwhile, Ava cops feelings for her granddad’s (female) hairdresser, and Paul and Ally harbor a secret of their own from their kids.

The saga of Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard’s Breeders is officially coming to an end: The familial dark comedy’s fourth and final season will premiere on FX Monday, July 31 at 10/9c with its first two of 10 episodes.
Five years have passed since we last saw the Worsley family. In Season 3, Paul (Freeman) and Ally (Haggard) were on the verge of splitting up, Jim (Alun Armstrong) and Jackie (Joanna Bacon) were in turmoil, and Luke found a new relationship, while Ava mended an old one. This post contains spoilers for the "Ted Lasso" season 3 finale.
Seemingly knowing its place alongside some of the most popular comedy shows the zeitgeist has ever seen, the "Ted Lasso" season finale made sure to reference another one. If you're a fan of "The Office" — the original or the American remake — you probably spotted some of these connections.
Let's start with the final nod to both a classic rom-com trope and to another great sitcom finale: Ted and Rebecca's goodbye at the airport. It's similar to the one Jenna Fischer's Pam has with Steve Carrell's Michael Scott in the series finale of the U.S. version of "The Office." Rebecca surprises Ted there much like Pam does to Michael, but this time the audience is privy to their conversation in a way they were not with Pam and Michael. Just before seeing Pam, Michael took his microphone off for the last time.

[This story contains spoilers for “Signs,” the fifth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.
Hunt’s answer: “I mean, you’ve seen the show before. You know how it goes.”
In “Signs,” the show’s fifth episode of season three, it went. Or rather, he went: After firing up the team before a match with powerhouse Manchester City — by basically repeating the same idea Jamie (Phil Dunster) offered up moments before — Zava no-shows for the match. (“Maybe he’s dead,” Ted muses on the sideline. “He fucking better be,” Roy growls.) He later explains to his social media followers — ahem, “believers” — that he’s retiring to focus solely on his family and his avocado farm.

New comedy titles include “Plebs: Soldiers of Rome,” “Deep Fake Neighbour Wars,” “Ruby Speaking Count,” “Abdulla” and “Significant Other.”

“We want to take risks but most importantly we want our audiences to find shows that reflect them and make them laugh,” Hughes continued.

Like a plump Christmas stocking, the real treats of series six have worked their way down to where we are now – somewhere around the heel. Having dutifully unwrapped the first couple of episodes and politely smiled at the satsumas and novelty tissues, we’ve reached the really good stuff. Episode four was nothing but single malt miniatures and Hotel Chocolat, both of which, incidentally, would be excellent ways to recover our nerves after all that excitement.
Everyone fortified? Let’s go.
Rip Jonesy. Rip Jimmy. Rip AC-12? Of all the balaclava-men-and-bolt-cutter peril the team has survived over the years, who’d have thought that in the end, they’d be brought down by bureaucracy. Acc Wise can blame it on redistribution of funds, department mergers and staff redundancies, but we know the deal. There’s no place for Ted Hastings in this rotten world.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Mongrel Media. **there are a few minor spoilers here. Director: Nick Jongerius. Writers: Nick Jongerius, Chris W. In the United States and Canadian markets, the film has been renamed to the much more placid The Windmill. Jongerius bloody trip to the Netherlands, involves an ancient urban legend. Several morally corrupt holidaymakers are set to interact with the killer in this urban legend, first hand. And, The Windmill relies on a Catholic morality, in which sinners must be punished. This is the Old Testament though, so there is no forgiveness on the horizon, for anyone. Then, characters face a supernatural villain. Everything favours this burned and scarred killer. Dutch horror films don’t get any more on-brand than The Windmill. Maybe a horror movie about the little Dutch boy who plugged that dam and saved Holland? Nah. Big, wooden windmills acting as a gateway to Hell screams Dutch horror, much like the Australian main character, the Asian sidekick….alright, there’s a bit more diversity past locale stereotyping. In any case, director Nick Jongerius spills buckets of gore all over the Netherlands, as a demon dispatches sinners with his all-healing scythe. Heads roll in the name of soulful enlightenment, because karma is quite the bitch in this European slasher import. Grab your clogs and throw on a poncho, because Holland’s hottest sightseeing tour is about to get messy. Like messy/gory, but also messy scripting, and messy crafting.
The film’s protagonist ends up being Jennifer (Charlotte Beaumont), a homeless Aussie transplant who just got outted as being an illegal.

In his new film, The Windmill, Nick Jongerius transforms one of Holland's picturesque tourist attractions into a hub of blood-soaked horror. With XLrator Media releasing The Windmill on VOD and iTunes this Tuesday, followed by a theatrical release on October 28th, we caught up with Jongerius for our latest Q&A feature.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Nick. When did you first come up with the idea for The Windmill?
Nick Jongerius: My pleasure. Thanks for your interest in the film. I first started thinking about the idea for this film after Frankenstein's Army. Our investors at that time were really interested in Holland, especially Amsterdam—the dikes, windmills, clogs, etc. This triggered me. I thought, "What if we use these famous touristic symbols of Holland and drench them in blood? Sort of turning it upside down. From there we shot a proof of concept,...

XLrator Media, the distribution company behind John Ridley’s “Jimi: All is By My Side,” “The Machine,” and more, will soon release the new horror film “The Windmill,” starring Noah Taylor, best known for his performances in “Game of Thrones,” “Almost Famous,” and “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” The film follows a group of unsuspecting tourists who discover a mysterious evil while traveling through the Dutch countryside. When their bus breaks down, they’re forced to seek shelter besides a windmill where supposedly a Satan-obsessed miller grinds peoples’ bones instead of grain. It co-stars Charlotte Beaumont (“Jupiter Ascending”), Patrick Baladi (“Rush”), Tanroh Ishida (“The Railway Man”) and Ben Batt (“Captain America: The First Avenger”). Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

To celebrate the release of horror slasher The Windmill Massacre on UK DVD, we’re giving one of our readers the chance to win a copy.
Nicely in time for Halloween, The Windmill Massacre is a fun and nostalgic throwback to edge-of-your-seat horror classics like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s a good and gory Dutch treat, with a franchise-worthy villain in the form of The Miller, guaranteed to put viewers in a spin. This creepy, ghoulish nail-biter benefits not only from a top quality cast, headed up by the fantastic Noah Taylor (a regular in Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders, and star of Simon Rumley’s horror favourite Red, White & Blue) and Patrick Baladi (David Brent’s dance off nemesis in The Office), but also a unique location (a splendidly spooky Dutch windmill) that offers nowhere to hide from the relentless killer.

"Without windmills, there would be no Holland." XLrator Media has debuted the first official trailer for indie horror The Windmill, originally known as The Windmill Massacre, from The Netherlands. The film is about an Australian girl escaping her past visiting The Netherlands, where she ends up on a tourist bus taking people to all the famous windmills in the country. The bus breaks down near an infamous windmill where "legend has it, a Devil-worshiping miller once ground the bones of locals instead of grain" and people begin to disappear. The cast includes Charlotte Beaumont, Noah Taylor, Patrick Baladi, Ben Batt, Tanroh Ishida and Fiona Hampton. This seems like it might be fun, with plenty of gore for horror fans. One review says this film "isn't your average slasher" so don't expect the usual going in. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Nick Jongerius' The Windmill,...

We revisit brilliant, unflinching UK medical drama Bodies by Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio. Gory scenes ahead…
Did you know umbilical cords can snap? That if you give one a hard-enough tug it can ping loose of a placenta and spray flecks of high-nutrition gunk all over your face? Or that too firm a yank on a lodged placenta can pull a uterus clean out, starting a flesh avalanche that turns pounds of inside-meat into surprise outside-meat that slumps, glistening, like an exotic off-cut in a butcher’s shop window?
I’d apologise for the graphic imagery but it serves a purpose. To head off at the pass any comments of the ‘why are you writing about a medical drama on a site called Den Of Geek?’ variety. I promise you, there isn’t a landscape more sci-fi than the layers of spongey, mottled purple lurking beneath a tautly pregnant stomach,...

We spoke to the Line Of Duty creator about series 3, Lindsay Denton, The Caddy, Jimmy Savile, tension, thrillers and more…
Warning: contains spoilers for Line Of Duty series 3, episode 5 (Nb interview took place before the finale aired. Here's a spoiler-filled post-finale chat).
As Line Of Duty viewers might expect from the man who’s turned the police interview into an art-form, Jed Mercurio is a very measured, practiced interviewee. He gives precise, categorical answers unfurred by the usual hesitations and rambling false starts. Bring up the perception that Line Of Duty’s series two finale was hard to follow and he explains, patiently, that the most reliable evidence we have suggests otherwise. He speaks fluently in terms of suppositions, anecdotal evidence, arithmetical means and statistical outliers. When he completes a given response, he simply stops talking.
Mercurio’s voice only became heated twice in the next six thousand words.

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Ricky Gervais has confirmed that The Office's David Brent will be heading to the big screen with his own movie, Life on the Road.
So as we anticipate what Brent has been up to since the end of the BBC hit comedy, here's what the cast have done since:
Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais played the lead role as David Brent - the embarrassing, toe-curling and cringeworthy boss of company Wernham Hogg, devoid of self-awareness but poised with an unwavering love for the paper merchants he manages.
Gervais went on to create comedy Extras with Stephen Merchant, which was co-produced by the BBC and HBO and aired between 2005 and 2007. Gervais played ambitious actor Andy Millman, afflicted with a useless agent played by Merchant. Guest stars have included Patrick Stewart, Samuel L Jackson, Ben Stiller and Kate Winslet.
In 2009, Gervais starred in, wrote and directed his feature comedy debut The Invention of Lying.

An arthouse fishing-trawler documentary sounds like a practical joke, but this takes us to places we've never before – into the ocean depths and back out on to the decks with the catch. It's a series of dark, semi-abstract tableaux full of flapping fish, clanking machinery and tattooed fishermen doing wet, gory work. It's easy to forget this is real life you're watching.
Saving Mr Banks (PG)
(John Lee Hancock, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson. 125 mins
How Walt Disney came to make Mary Poppins was hardly a pressing movie mystery, and one suspects a spoonful of drama has been added, but the leads are eminently watchable.

A Memento-style puzzle underlies a cautionary tale set among Birmingham's homeless population
The title's the acronym for No Fixed Abode, and this cautionary tale of displacement has impeccable credentials: writer-director Steve Rainbow has worked at hostels across the country, and his supporting cast are drawn from Birmingham's homeless population. A befuddled Patrick Baladi is Adam, the sometime family man who wakes up in a hostel with no memory of how he got there; his plight is framed – perhaps too conveniently – as a Memento-style puzzle, with flashbacks revealing grim truths during the trudge between makeshift shelters. It operates at a fairly low, scrappy level: there are continuity blips, and Rainbow can only assign two (representatively unsympathetic) policemen for the whole of Digbeth. Yet for once this doesn't seem inappropriate: Nfa has the air of a compellingly ordinary nightmare, and its modulated conclusion brings us closer than expected to the pain and...

Made on an extremely modest sized budget, it’s somewhat unfair to point the finger at some of the more meagre, technical shortcomings in Steve Rainbow’s N.F.A. (No Fixed Abode). Yes the lighting is below standard, as is the sound, but that often comes with the territory of making a film for so little money. Therefore the one way to truly analyse this production is within the story, and fortunately for the debutant filmmaker, it remains compelling throughout.
Though Adam (Patrick Baladi) goes to sleep one night with a beautiful wife by his side and an adoring daughter in the other room, he awakes to find himself alone, isolated and lonely at a hostel for the homeless, with no prior recognition of how he got there. With so many questions to be answered, Adam sets off to discover how he ended up without a home, and what...

The epic action-thriller stars Hemsworth as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Brühl as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Latest poster for Ron Howard's Rush. Time to beef up the adrenalin? So, we're in a bit of a repetitive mode here with these posters from the Formula 1 film which, unfortunately, don't include much Formula 1 in them. We're all for images of Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl as James Hunt and Niki Lauda respectively, but a poster with the drivers in action would be very welcome at this point in time, especially since the film debuts soon, on September 27th. Andrew Eaton, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Eric Fellner, Brian Oliver and screenwriter Peter Morgan produce. Also on board Rush are Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer, Alexandra Maria Lara, Joséphine de La Baume, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Baladi and Cristian Solimeno.
