Kevin Nicholson announced last year that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, but apparently his parents had other ideas. Just weeks after he announced his candidacy, Nicholson’s parents both donated $2,700 each — the legal maximum — to the campaign of Tammy Baldwin, the Democratic senator their son is trying to unseat. “My parents have a different worldview than I do, and it is not surprising that they would support a candidate like Tammy Baldwin who shares their perspective,” Nicholson said in a statement to CNN. Twitter was divided on Thursday as people voiced their approval — or disappointment — over Sen. Al Franken’s resignation amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.
Much like Franken himself did in his emotional Senate-floor speech, many tweeters pointed out the irony that the Minnesota Democrat was forced to resign over his alleged actions while other politicians who have been accused of sexual misconduct — including President Donald Trump and embattled Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore — have not faced consequences. (Trump and Moore have denied the allegations against them.)

Facing a surge of pressure from his female counterparts in the Senate, Sen. Al Franken has resigned amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.
Franken, a Democratic junior senator from Minnesota, announced his resignation in an emotional appearance on the Senate floor on Thursday.
In the coming weeks, “I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate,” Franken said.
He added that “some of the allegations against me are simply not true. Others I remember very differently.”

Let's start with the best news. Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer is following in mom's footsteps by playing a lesbian, and I can't fucking wait. Emily Owens M.D. didn't get picked up for a second season, but that is only Ok because now Mamie will be on CBS' drama Backstrom playing "the female lead Nicole Graveley, a watchful, competent police detective who is a lesbian saddened over her breakup with her longtime partner." Her co-star is Rainn Wilson, who will play "Everett Backstrom, an overweight, offensive, irascible detective, as he tries, and fails, to change his self-destructive behavior." Sounds great already!

2012 was such a remarkable year for lesbian and bisexual women that we're already psyched on 2013. Here are 50 reasons why.

With marriage equality becoming a reality in more and more states by the minute, it's going to be a good year for the men-loving-men and women-loving-women who have been waiting to say "I do." Some of them for their whole lives.

Heather Hogan: The clear choice for Out Les/Bi Woman of the year is Rachel Maddow. When she landed her own show on MSNBC during the 2008 election, there was a real sense of Charlie Bucket's Golden Ticket novelty about it. An unabashed lesbian with a butch sensibility who earned a PhD from Oxford and refused to capitulate to the lowest common denominator in her punditry, the country just sort of patted her on the head like Willy Wonka and said, "Well, you're just lucky to be here, aren't you?" Hollywood should be euphoric today. The entertainment industry woke up to election results that reflect a country a lot more like the fictional place they've been depicting on screens large and small for decades: more ethnically diverse, more gay-friendly, with powerful women and where it's just fine to light up a spliff. Yes, our black president won re-election decisively, but not only that. Todd Akin went down. Elizabeth Warren got in. Maine approved same-sex marriage. Election Day 2012 will go down as a breakthrough night for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) community.
Lgbt rights advocates are celebrating same-sex marriage victories in Maine and Maryland, and while the final results have yet to be unveiled, Washington state appears poised to follow suit. This marks the first time in history U.S. voters have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage legislation that appeared on a ballot.
In addition to the marriage equality news, Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin became the nation's first openly Lgbt senator. And, last but not least, President Barack Obama (the first ever to endorse marriage equality while in office) swept to victory.

The Obama Double Rainbow
Are you still numb? Have you had a chance to catch your breath? History was made last night, and it started with President Barack Obama's re-election. After all of the back and forth and up and down about who was winning what polls ... The President pulled out a decisive victory, winning both the Electoral College and the popular vote, providing a crushing defeat for Republicans, Fox, and radio blowhards everywhere.
But unlike what happened in 2008, there was no bitter to go with the sweet. Four years ago we had to deal with the devastation of Prop 8 in California, which muted the elation of the President's win.
But not this time.
Since the late '90s, a total of 32 states have held votes on marriage-equality, and each time, voters have opposed the measure. There were four more chances last night, and in what may represent a society-changing event,...

After one of the most expensive senate races in the history of Wisconsin, Democratic Representative Tammy Baldwin defeated former governor Tommy Thompson to become the first openly gay Senator in U.S. history.
Reuters reports the candidates raised at least $65 million in the fight to assume the seat of Democrat Herb Kohl, who is retiring after four terms in the Senate.
Baldwin's sexual orientation was never a main issue in the campaign. However, she was criticized by Thompson for her support of Barack Obama's health care plan.
Another openly gay politician, Democrat Mark Pocan, is expected to replace Baldwin in the House.
Baldwin spoke at the Democratic National Convention and campaigned for Obama in the days leading up to the 2012 election.

Channing Tatum has confirmed that they're looking at creating a sequel to Magic Mike. I'm honestly not sure where they'd go with it, with Tatum's character pursuing his post-stripper life, or if they follow the club to Miami. I honestly wasn't that impressed with the movie as a whole, which seemed to have an identity crisis. But I'll watch the previews of the stripping for a sequel.
But before he gets around to that, Channing is in negotiations to play Evel Knievel . I hope they don't hurt that beautiful body, plus how would he gyrate his hips if he broke all those bones?

Washington -- Women including sports icon Billie Jean King and actress Jane Lynch are starting a super Pac on Wednesday that they hope will ncrease the political power of the lesbian community.
The organization, called Lpac, will provide financial backing to pro-lesbian candidates, whether Democrats or Republicans, male or female, gay or straight. This really isn't news, but seriously, go look at these pictures of Chris Hemsworth in St. Barts on a waterslide with Ben Affleck. The body is just beyond belief.
I had wondered aloud if the world would let Brent Corrigan become Sean Paul Lockhart again. I had hoped. And maybe it will, because there he is, pictured in Entertainment Weekly for his role in Chillerama.
Anne Heche is set to star in the NBC pilot Save Me, about a woman who starts to believe that she's channeling God after an accident. The jokes write themselves.
New Jersey is getting tantalizingly close to a veto proof majority for marriage equality. I've suspected that was the endgame of both parties from the beginning, holding true to the populace while allowing Gov. Christie's conservative star to keep rising.
Nike, Microsoft and Concur have come out publicly for marriage equality in Washington, and leaders...

Glee has finally cast Mike Chang's parents. Tamlyn Tomita (The Joy Luck Club) and Keong Sim (The Last Airbender) will play the traditional parents of the voiceless singer. Somehow I don't think they'll be that into Tina. Now about Rachel's dads…
A new law in San Francisco is targeting the nudists that primarily frequent the Castro district. The proposal wouldn't go so far as to outlaw public nudity, but it would require a towel or other barrier to be used on benches and chairs, and you'd have to cover up to dine in restaurants now. Honestly, I don't think that's asking too much.
Despite the advertising economy being soft, NBC has announced that only six Super Bowl in-game ad slots remain available. The 30-second slots are going for a record $3.5 million.
Ed Speleers (Eragon), Luke Pasqualino (The Borgias) and Jessica Szohr (Gossip Girl) are set to star in a...

So the news on Wednesday was about Abercrombie & Fitch offering to pay the cast of the Jersey Shore not to appear in their clothes. The Situation tweeted that their PR sux, since A&F create a "Gtl" shirt obviously from the show. And MTV called it savvy PR, and offered to work with A&F to "leverage Jersey Shore to reach the largest youth audience on television." I feel dirty and used.
Here are instructions on sword swallowing. Pfft. Like we need those here!
Nicolas Winding Refn says that he's been told his opportunity to make a Wonder Woman movie hinges on how well his remake of Logan's Run does.
Rep. Tammy Baldwin is an early favorite to upgrade from the House to the Senate in Wisconsin. The Victory Fund has said her election is a priority.

Alec Baldwin is not going to pull out of Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages movie. I can’t decide if that’s a good or bad thing.
Despite earlier reports, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new pilot Ringer is not going to be picked up by The CW, because they can’t afford it. Turns out CBS felt the series didn’t fit their demographic.
Rep. Tammy Baldwin is “very likely” to run for an upcoming vacancy in the Senate. If she wins, she would become the first openly gay U.S. Senator. True story: When she was running for her first term, I was on a sales call in Minneapolis, and the customer I was dealing with was driving us to lunch when he started talking about how that “dumb dyke” would never get elected. My coworker had to physically restrain me from climbing over the back of the car.

Giving lie to the notion that all straight, old, white men are homophobic whackjobs (see: Republican Senator John McCain), former president Jimmy Carter told a reporter that he thought America might be ready to put a gay or lesbian in the White House.
That prompted New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd to write about the topic, including asking Democratic Congressman Barney Frank and Bill Maher, the latter telling Dowd, he didn't think we were:
Can you imagine how much a gay president would have to overcompensate to please the macho ninnies who control our national debate? Women like Hillary have to do it, Obama had to do it because he’s black and liberal, but a gay president? He’d have to nuke something the first week.
Frank (gay himself, in case that news somehow had missed you) was no more optimistic, if more serious about the issues around a...
